I'm a Red Sox fan. What are the odds Dombrowski does something stupid like shelling out $150 million for Eric Hosmer?
Travis Sawchik
12:59
I could see it

Do you see any under-the-radar free agents this offseason who could benefit a team in the way Charlie Morton did for Houston?
Travis Sawchik
12:59
We have some projects in the works here at FG!
Rusty Dusty

Who will be the biggest star to be traded this offseason?
Travis Sawchik
1:00
Stanton ... if he's traded
Babe Lincoln

What do you miss about being on a team beat?  What do you prefer about working at FG?
Travis Sawchik
1:01
I do not miss deadline writing every night and rain delays ... I do miss the press box camaraderie and some of the travel. At FG, I love that there's an entire industry to cover and there are rarely bad ideas to explore

In general, which is more difficult: predicting where free agents will sign, or who will win the end-of-season awards?
Travis Sawchik
1:01
Free agents

Do the Astros add a bat during the Winter?
Travis Sawchik
1:02
Let's get Stanton to the Astros

Other than Big Data Baseball, what's a baseball book you'd recommend to get us through the long offseason?
Travis Sawchik
1:03
So much great writing out there right now ... But Ball Four is a must read if you haven't
stever20
1:03
but doesn't a lot of the activity run into the holidays and then the football playoffs?
Travis Sawchik
1:03
The holidays used to be an unspoken ceasefire ... not as much anymore. I don't think football plays overshadow signings

Manfred has denied any tomfoolery but would you be surprised if the players arrive to work in 2018 and all the balls are suddenly the 2014 model?
Travis Sawchik
1:04
I don't think MLB wants a return to the 2014 environment but it wouldn't surprise me to see the standards tightened

Pretty clear the Indians won't be retaining Bryan Shaw. Even if they re-sign Joe Smith, wouldn't it make sense to use Danny Salazar in a relief role? With Tomlin coming back they have more than 5 SPs and Allen/Miller are FA's after 2018.
Travis Sawchik
1:04
I really want to see Salazar in a bullpen role. I think he could excel there and maybe stay healthier
1:05
I'd love to see him deployed like Devinski

Should the Red Sox try and trade for Yasmani Grandal? They can't continue to ignore the catcher position.
Travis Sawchik
1:05
If I'm a team in need of a catcher, I'd make an offer for Grandal

Something about Boston's front office situation depresses me. Dave Dombrowski is doing Dave Dombrowski things, the farm system is depleted, and it appears it'll be another winter of large spending for players who probably aren't worth it (Hosmer). Sure, they have a young core that Theo and Ben built - but I still tend to believe the Dombrowski hiring cut their viable years to compete without a rebuild from 7-8 years to maybe 5. Not sure why such a progressive front office is getting so much older (La Russa, Wren) and backwards.
Travis Sawchik
1:07
Yeah, I think the Red Sox might have been better off by holding onto their young talent and supplementing via FA. The window has been reduced. The tough thing is Sale is so good, if he goes Bumgarner in a postseason the price is worth it.

How scary would the astros be with Stanton aiming at the Crawford Boxes?
Travis Sawchik
1:08
That and he's have an easier time with the opposite field
Oakland
1:08
They should contract the Montreal franchise.
Travis Sawchik
1:09
Contract an HBD flagship?

Do you see the Astros having a relatively quiet offseason?
Travis Sawchik
1:10
Typically it's tough to upgrade a WS winning roster
So, yeah, probably more quiet than loud

Is the fact that Votto rarely comes up in MVP discussion (despite repeatedly being the best pure hitter in the game) evidence he is among the most underrated and unappreciated players of this generation? Would it be different if he played his games in pinstripes?
Travis Sawchik
1:10
That's a logical and rational position ... I really want to see Votto in October

Pirates feel like a team on the fringe. Are they destined to end up in that 75-83 win purgatory zone or could you see them competing/tanking?
Travis Sawchik
1:11
They are in that middle-ground. If enough things go right (everything went wrong in 2017), I could see them in wild-card picture in 2018
Oakland

Death to the Sacre Bleu.
Travis Sawchik

This is what I deal with in my private HBD life, folks

Fun bit of trivia: For MLB players that went by Gabe (at least as searchable by FanGraphs) - Kapler actually only finished with the second most WAR! Care to guess who finished ahead of him?
It's Gabe Gross, shockingly
