Does your diet have a name?
Oscar O'Bannon
12:21
Has the success of the Cubs and Astros fooled fans into thinking rebuilding is easier and faster than it really is? I've heard White Sox fans talking WC next year. White Sox fans!
Travis Sawchik
12:22
I think this is a valid point and I touched on it a little bit recently ...https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/what-if-more-teams-follow-the-astros-e...
12:23
Not every team that tears down and rebuilds so dramatically is going to be successful ... especially if more teams are engaged in the same practice
And it also means the gap between the good and poor teams could grow which is not great for MLB (less competitive baseball)

How at risk are the Astros for a Cubs-like hangover? Should they consider some bigger moves to preempt that?
Travis Sawchik
12:25
I think the Astros are in better shape to avoid a hangover r

A historically-good lineup returns along with a starting rotation that looks better than the one that opened 2017

Travis Sawchik
12:28
It's always risking to bet on speed-based players after 30 (which means in free agency)
But I think Cain is going to be a better investment, in part because he won't get the same years
Q-Ball
12:29
What was the cause of the Cubs step back last year?  Bad luck, regression from an impossibly-high expectation, unexpectedly bad performances?  Injuries were not really a factor.
Travis Sawchik
12:29
Some of it was regression, including defensively , and I believe they also had the oldest pitching staff in baseball
Mystery Team
12:29
Which surprise team will make the most out-of-nowhere moves to add talent and improve their chances?
Travis Sawchik
12:30
The Phillies could take this route. They have a ton of money if they choose to spend it. And they have Hoskins. HOSKINS. And Nola looks like a great No. 2 if not a true No. 1.
Soxtober 2020
12:31
Can the ChiSox be a sleeper in the Machado race next offseason?  They will have a payroll almost entirely made of rookie contracts and Reinsdorf seems like he will sell the team in the nearish future, so he may not be on the hook for an entire 10 year deal.
Travis Sawchik
12:31
Machado and Harper are so young that you don't have to be 2019 contender to court them
So, yeah, WhiteSox are a darkhorse kind of like the Phillies
NotBoras
12:32
I'm hearing I could wait till February for big signings.
Travis Sawchik
12:32
I think you could be waiting a long time on Hosmer
Ben
12:32
Least likely spot for Ohtani? Kansas City? Baltimore? Somewhere else?
Travis Sawchik
12:32
Those are at the top of the list. Detroit, perhaps, too.
P
12:33
If the Yankees get Ohtani and Harper next offseason, should the jays just give up and full rebuild and wait out their window?
Travis Sawchik
12:33
Everyone should give up
AHume92
12:34
Is Bautista done?  I can't think of a role for him other than first bench bat on an NL non-contender.
Travis Sawchik

He should still be on a roster in 2018

12:34
On the subject of "elite coaching depth," how many WAR has Ray Searage been worth to the Pirates and why isn't he paid the market rate of $/WAR?
Travis Sawchik
12:35
Even if a coach like Searage is only responsible for adding 1 WAR in a season, or 1/2 a win, he's still incredibly valuable
LegallyEagle
12:35
From a player's perspective, better to sign a deal earlier or later in the offseason? Does it matter?
Travis Sawchik
12:35
I think that's case by case. Boras has shown us that patience can be a virtue
12:36
I think elite guys can afford to wait, but if you are part of that crowded middle class of FAs you might want to pounce on an earlier offer
John
12:39
The Yankees have to be the favorite to land Ohtani right? It seems like they check every box on his list and could go to a 6 man rotation if they retain CC.
Travis Sawchik
12:40
Yankees are the favorite, but I don't know how strong a favorite
Matt
12:40
If the Marniers actually would have planned for this day Ohtani would be theirs. With the strong Japan market they should have offered him endorsement deals to well compensate any move to United States. If he doesn't sign those deals dry up.
Travis Sawchik
12:40
Should more teams have better planned for this day and tried to acquire more pool money?
AHume92
12:42
I'm Canadian.  We have Thanksgiving in October (which is awesome for postseason baseball).  We generally eat turkey both then and at Christmas.  Do Americans typically eat turkey at both, or has not enough time elapsed between holidays?  If you don't have turkey for Christmas, then what?  Ham?

Why is this offseasonn going so slowly? By this time last year, the Astros and Braves had made a handful of deals and the Dbacks and Mariners had made a pretty big trade. Are Ohtani and Stanton holding things up or is it just one of those things?

Probability that Stanton is a Marlin one year from now?  It seems odd that his trade is being treated as some foregone conclusion.  Was that an expectation for any new ownership group?  How long (if they trade Stanton) until clearance of debt allows the Marlins to flex some financial muscle?

Word came out recently, though unsurprisingly, that the Dodgers will try to move A. Gonzalez this offseason. While he's been their butter and eggs guy (thanks, Vin) through 2016, 2017 was a lost year and may signal the end of his true effectiveness, meaning they will likely have to eat the $21.5M owed to him in 2018. Does it make sense to move the face of the franchise (to at least the Hispanic population in LA) and all-around great clubhouse guy for nothing? Since you're paying him, why not hold onto him and those intangibles, allowing him to PH or fill in at 1B 1-2 times a week, moving Bellinger to the OF? Just seems unnecessary to offload a positive force on the club with no return.

Is there much evidence - beyond commentators' assumptions - for the widespread belief that Ohtani wants to go to a large-ish market?  He is leaving money on the table by coming to the U.S. now rather than in a couple years, suggesting that money isn't his primary motivation.  I'll also argue that his biggest endorsement potential, if he's highly successful in MLB, is in Japan and not North America, also pushing against the idea that endorsement dollar potential in the local market will be a big driver of his decision.  He's originally from a fairly small city in Iwate Prefecture.  Maybe he's a person who wants to live in a huge metropolis, but that's certainly not the sort of place that he grew up.

Isn't it a bad idea for any team to tie up the amount of money it would take to sign a player like Harper/Machado? The team is just paying at or above market value for WAR and likely taking on all the risk associated with possible injuries. Wouldn't it make more sense to diversify risk and sign multiple talents players?
