What's up everyone? Let's get right into it.

I'm worried that the Yankees are coming like the Giants with their management - Hal Steinbrenner seems content with just getting into the playoffs and Cashman has been GM for almost 25 years - are the Yanks headed for middling status?
Derek
12:02
I am not a huge NFL guy so I can't say I know a ton about what's going on with the Giants, but I did see that ridiculous QB sneak play lol. The Yankees aren't in nearly as dire of a situation as the Giants though, let's be fair. Seems like the Giants are one of the worst-run franchises in the league right now. The Yankees are frustrating in terms of $ spent, but they aren't a wreck by any stretch of the imagination. They're mostly well run in fact.

What is the absolute latest that MLB and the Players Association can come to an agreement without impacting games. The players will still need some kind of spring training even if a deal is reached in March, right?
Derek
12:05
Yes, a spring training is going to be a must. Think of what they did in 2020. I think "summer camp" ran from 7/1 - 7/25 or something like that. So we're talking about a report date in early March at the latest.

Has Gleyber Torres been written off too early? What would it take from him this year to re-establish himself as an everyday player?
Derek
12:08
He's what, 25? I don't think he's being written off. But there are legitimate warts in his game (defense, is the power just a juiced ball thing?). That said - he did finish both '20 and '21 relatively strong...so how about getting off to a better start this year and maintaining consistency? He doesn't have to be a big power hitter, but he should still be able to do something like 285/350/440, I feel.

Thanks for these chats! Assuming the Yankees can continue to churn out high leverage relievers, and assuming Loaisaga has the highest trade value, what could he fetch in a trade to help at 1st or centerfield? Anything more than a bench piece for a contending club?
Derek
12:11
He'd get a better return than a bench piece, but he's also not going to be the headliner of a trade to get someone like Olson or Reynolds. He could be 1A in a deal, though. Trading Loaisiga isn't as crazy as it may sound given his injury history.
Jon
12:11
How likely is it that Severino returns to form this season as a starter? He's one of the most fun pitchers to watch and would dramatically improve the pitching staff (which is already pretty good) if he can stay healthy.
Derek
12:13
I feel pretty good about the possibility of that. As we saw in the ZiPS projection, the forecast looks good. Plus he's now even further removed from the surgery, and that second year back seems like the time things tend to click for most pitchers.

12:13
Realistically what would trade proposals look like for: Sandy Alcántara and Matt Olsen ?
Derek
12:14
The Marlins aren't gonna trade the guy they just extended, but any deal for him will undoubtedly start with Volpe and a LOT more. As for Olson, the trade values site says that Peraza+Gil+Pereira works, and yet somehow that feels light to me.
Bubba Crosby
12:14
Would you trade for Hader or Buyer beware(a lot of innings on that arm)?
Derek
12:16
Back to back questions from ex-Yanks. In a vacuum I'd trade for Hader, but the team's adherence to the luxury tax steers me away realistically. MLBTR has him getting 10M in arb. That money needs to be spent on up the middle position players or 1B.

12:17
Who is an under the radar FA that could fit the bench role left by Tyler Wade?
Derek
12:17
I don't know that anyone is under the radar when it comes to utility role FAs, but I'd like to get Jose Iglesias in that sort of role.
12:18
Niko Goodrum could be that guy too, if you really want to dig deep
Shep
12:19
Andujar - What happens with him?
Derek
12:19
More LF in Scranton. He still has a minor league option remaining and next to zero trade value.
He's kinda the new Greg Bird.

12:20
What do you think of the Yankees new philosophy of spending almost all of their international signing money on the best player available and not speeding it around?
Derek
12:22
I wouldn't read too much into it. If they can get the best player possible and it eats up most of the budget, so be it. They are able to unearth really good prospects for pretty low bonuses too. Think Severino or more recently, Peraza.
Roderick Arias
12:23
Who would you comapare me to ?
Derek
12:24
I know nothing about you other than that you're an IFA SS about to sign with the Yankees. Sorry.
Shep
12:25
Is there a specific reason that MLB will not allow draft picks to be traded?
Derek
12:26
Idk about a specific reason, but I think it needs to be included in the CBA. Now that we see IFA bonus pool slots traded, maybe we'll see something similar in a new deal. It would make things a bit more interesting though.

How much fun would it be for Manny Banuelos to turn into an 09 Damaso Marte?
Derek

12:29
What do you think the biggest sticking point will be in the upcoming MLB - Players negotiations?
Derek
12:30
Based on the Nov/Dec rumors, it seems like reshaping service time/free agency eligibility is going to be a big thing.  The players are tired of being manipulated into a 7th year of team control and owners want to suppress salaries, of course.

Do you think that Manfred wants to have an extended  lock-out by making demands that he knows the MLBPA will never accept?  Is he trying to lead the owners down the primrose path of other Commissioners who thought they could break the union and when this all ends, have to resign?
Derek
12:34
I can't see Manfred wanting the lockout to interfere with games (and thereby $), but he definitely doesn't mind doing it in the offseason, obviously. He's hoping it results in concessions from the PA. Yeah, he said the lockout was necessary to get the ball rolling on negotiations, but that was weeks ago. The league isn't making a proposal until tomorrow, so lol. They are not in a rush.

If the Yanks go with a stopgap SS, Voit at 1B and Hicks in CF, how many games will they likely win?  Enough for a WC spot?
Derek
12:36
If we're to believe the ZiPS projection, yeah, it should be enough for a WC spot. It's not pretty, but it's still a 90+ win team.
Hal
12:36
Who's my #2 starter in 2023?
Derek
12:37
I'll say Severino
Daniel
12:37
Are there any less well-known archives of MLB footage? On twitter the other day Kevin Brown came up and there is essentially no footage of him as a Yankee. Other than say… MLB Film Room and YouTube, where else can we go?
Derek
12:38
Not that I'm aware of. The Yankees Throwbacks twitter account shares some pretty cool stuff, if you're just looking to casually browse. But I don't think there are any other searchable resources, and MLB would undoubtedly do copyright takedowns
Jimmy

Does Gary Sanchez ever hit enough to justify the "defense" or at DH?  I just can't shake that run he went on when he came up back when.
