At DH, no. At catcher, yeah. A 100 wRC+ is really good at that spot, as much as his other flaws frustrate us. He's never going to be the guy we saw in 2016 though.
John
12:40
What is the latest with the Japanese OF?  Do we have any chance there?
Derek
12:41
Nothing re: Seiya Suzuki because of the lockout. Sounds like there is some interest on the Yankees end, but no idea if it's a serious thing.
Shep
12:42
Why won't Gary ever be the guy we saw in 2016? What happened?
Derek
12:43
170 wRC+ catchers just don't exist. Nor at any position really, haha. He's posted a 99 wRC+ since 2018. I think this is just what he is.
12:44
As for what happened: he was still great in 17! But he started striking out a lot more in the following years, and I think the constant tweaking of his defense maybe has spilled over elsewhere in his game
John
12:45
If we wont spend money, should we become sellers and try and rebuild again?  The current team cant win, so why stay in the middle of the pack?
Derek
12:46
The Yankees are still a 90+ win team right now. This isn't a middling .500 club like 2016. They can't sell now. And let's see how spending goes after the lockout, shall we? Maybe we are in for a surprise.

What scenario would you rather have: 1. trade some top prospects for Olsen and get a reserve CF/OF or 2. Re sign Rizzo and trade those top prospects for Reynolds in CF? thanks
Derek
12:47
#2. Much rather trade prospects for a premium position than 1B.
Mark
12:48
What do you about a trade to get Hosmer (as a Padre Salary Dump) and CJ ABrams and what is the realistic package to get them
Derek
12:49
Hosmer is sooooo bad. But Abrams would be one of the prospects I'd need back to take on Hosmer, which even then I'm still reluctant to do
Imagine

Think we will ever see a team that adjusts outfield walls based on their SP of the day?  Could be the shift 2.0!
Derek
12:50
Would have been done already if it was allowed.

12:51
'how are we in a situation where we have to do a deal with the devil (correa) or start the year without a SS?'
Derek
12:52
Story isn't a terrible option, you know. That's still a possibility. There's going to be a new shortstop.
Shep
12:52
Just got tickets to Yanks home opener. Will they try to line up Cole for that or just pitch whoever is lined up for that game?
Derek
12:53
Whoever is lined up. The way the schedule looks right now, it'd be the
whoops. It would be the #3 starter.
Jon
12:54
If Gallo slides over to center, would you rather the Yankees sign Conforto, Schwarber, Suzuki, or someone else? How does that compare as a use of resources versus signing Correa?
Derek
12:55
None of the above tbh. I don't really want another corner guy. Correa has been priority #1 for me and should be for the Yankees too. He's the best player out there in a position of need. Those kind of matches don't come around often. And yet the team sure likes to pass them up (see Machado, Harper, etc.)
Shep
12:56
Should Hicks only hit Left Handed, ala Cedric Mullins?
Derek
12:57
Assuming this stems from the FG article yesterday (Finding Switch-Hitters Who Should Stop Switch-Hitting | FanGraphs Baseball). But Hicks actually is better from the right side in his career, although I think that was moreso in his Twins and early-Yankees days. Yankee Stadium obviously is better suited for him as a lefty though
Any last questions? Got a few minutes left and an empty queue.
JT
12:59
Should Yanks take more chances on Signing young talent early (thinking Torres) with their adherence to luxury tax threshold? Even with down season still 25 and plenty of value can be received even in terms of trade later (salary certainty)?
Derek

Under the terms of the expired CBA, they probably should have been more aggressive with extensions. And they were to some degree with Hicks and Sevy.
Just didn't go as planned, of course.
1:01
Alright everyone, I gotta get going. Thanks for coming by. We'll chat again next week.
