Derek

Hey everyone, let's get this going. But first, I want to plug the mailbag email: viewsfrom314@gmail. We're in need of some questions for next week.
CM Burns

It has been reported that the owners, after locking out the players, did not make any offers or attempts to even negotiate for approximately 44 days.  I am no expert in labor law, but isn't that considered to be in bad faith, possibly even illegal, possibly even a breach of the baseball anti trust exemption?
Derek
12:03
I do not know the precise answer to your question because terms like bad faith have a technical meaning that might not jibe with what we think it to be. However, I will say it's an atrocious look for the league to barely change its offer after 40+ days of a lockout, which they did not have to institute. Plus, they said the goal of the lockout was to ramp up discussions. The league should be getting trashed for this.

BA has Volpe ranked 10th, Peraza 55th and Jason 87th.  Reasonable?
Derek
12:04
Yup, more than reasonable. Volpe and Peraza seem on the money. People are going to be upset about Jasson's ranking, but to be honest, if the hype wasn't out of control pre-debut we would have been satisfied I think.

12:05
Will the Minors begin the season on time, even if the MLB is delayed due to the current lock-out?
Derek
12:05
Yes, no change there. You just won't see 40-man roster guys playing though - prospects like Peraza, Medina, etc. won't be playing because they are union members.
Alvaro
12:06
Was there any news on Ellsbury's grievance against the Yanks a while ago?? Was there a settlement?
Derek
12:07
No clue, to be honest. Haven't read/heard/seen anything on it in a few years now. We always get asked about this though.

If you have read it, any reaction to Fangraphs Yankee prospects review.  Surprises?
Derek
12:08
I think we may do a broader post about all the prospect lists that are out. BP, BA, and FG all have pub'd their Yankees lists. Quick reactions to the FG one: surprised that Gil was behind Deivi, for one. Also surprised to see Schmidt and Gomez still in the top ten after both hardly pitched in 2021.
CM Burns
12:09
I noticed that Estavan Florial did not make the Fangraphs prospect list at all.  Do you think it may have been an oversight, or are they so low on him that they don't even think he is even worth a mention?
Derek
12:10
And yeah, Florial was dropped from their list. I'm not sure if it's an oversight but I wouldn't say he's a good prospect anymore. He struck out 30% of the time in Triple-A last year without many positives.

MSPST (my signing proposal suck too!) and MTPS -- Given that the Yankees seem less likely to spend the massive amounts needed to get Correa, how likely is it that they sign Kris Bryant at third and Simmons at SS, then package Gio, Deivi and Luke Voit (too much?/too little?) for Matt Olson! How much do you think this plan sucks, as a plan B?
Derek
12:11
The Olson trade proposal sucks, I'm sorry haha. They're trying to unload money, not take on arb deals like Gio/Voit, plus Deivi's value is in the cellar right now.
12:12
I don't see Bryant happening either, though his versatility is nice. I just don't see the Yankees prioritizing corner OF/3B this offseason, especially a RHH.
And Simmons - please no.
Moe Howard
12:13
Do you think the Yankees should retire #9 for Graig Nettles (realize it's retired already)?
Derek
12:14
Sure, why not. It's a lot easier to do since they already retired 9 for Maris. If it was on merit alone, I'm not so sure Nettles should have his number retired. Very, very good player but doesn't feel like an all time great. Before my time though.

12:15
Best fit for Correa is....Boston! Xander wouldn't be happy, but other than that and penny pinching, what's the counterargument?
Derek
12:15
No real counter argument. Every team should be able to squeeze in a player like Correa somehow. I guess they'd move Xander to third, Devers to first in this scenario?
Steven Tydings
12:17
Hi Derek. My question today: Which player on the current roster best demonstrates the qualities of tortoise and why?
Derek
12:18
Welcome back Steven, appreciate the always outside the box question. I'll go with Luke Voit. He's one of the slowest, if not the slowest player on the roster right now.
Daniel
12:18
Call me crazy — but if the area improved ends up being 1B (Say Olson), shouldn’t they have just kept Wade as the incumbent SS as a bridge to Volpe? That trade is still a head-scratcher for me.
Derek
12:19
No, Wade playing SS everyday would be a disaster. It would be an empty bat in the lineup.
12:20
If they were/are going to fall back on someone in the org, it was/is going to be Urshela.

Get a chance to listen to Sonny Gray on R2C2? Interesting stuff, where it sounds like Larry Rothschild couldn't articulate the pitching strategies in an effective/meaningful way.
Derek
12:21
Yeah, I did. I think this is how it had been reported over the years, especially once they let Rothschild go and replaced him with Blake. It seems like Gray and Rothschild made amends, at least
Mark from Brooklyn
12:22
Do you have a list of all the kids the Yankees signed in the International arena since Saturday?  Do you intend to do a write-up on them?
Derek
Maybe we will do a write up at some point, can't promise anything though.
CM Burns
12:24
Always wondered...when Cone and Oneill gave you VF 314 that historic shout out during a live game...how did that make you feel?  Did it take you by surprise?  Did you have any idea they read your blog?
Derek
12:25
It was awesome, to say the least. I know Cone reads the site from time to time which is always appreciated. We did have a partnership with YES for a little while though, so I can't say it was a total surprise that we came up.

What percentage would you give voit of being on the team on opening day?
luke voit must stay
12:25
why have yankees fans who used to say voit trade best ever all of a sudden desperate to dump hiM
Derek
12:26
Grouping these two together. I'll say 50/50 on Voit. There were no rumors pre-lockout linking him to specific teams (at least that I can recall), so maybe the Yankees will keep him around.
12:27
But with the universal DH almost certainly coming, he should get a little more interest. The Yankees definitely love his bat though, it just may not be an ideal fit anymore.
JonInSTP
12:27
If the lockout causes a significant number of games to be missed, what could be the mid-'20s version of the McGwire/Sosa race that baseball leans on to revive interest? Could anything do that?
Derek
12:30
I think we need a league that is simply more inviting to everyone and anyone, and not necessarily something happening on the field to restore interest. It's too expensive to go to a game. It's too expensive to play at a young age. National games are moving to places like Apple, apparently. A lot of players blend in to the crowd. This isn't good for improving interest.

If they're not going to use Gallo at least part time know center why did they acquire him?
