We get this question about Gallo and CF a lot. It may just be that the team views Judge as a better defender there. It's not like Texas was playing him there over the past couple of years either. I think there's an assumption that he's good in center, but I'm not so sure that's true. They got him for the lefty power with high OBP, that's really all there is to it.

What are your thoughts on some trade targets that I haven't seen talked about much? I think Edmundo Sosa (Cards move Edman to SS with Gorman taking 2B) and Lorenzo Cain (Yankees eat the salary and pair him with Hicks in center) could be good options depending on what happens with the free agent shortstops.
Derek
12:35
Sosa feels more like a backup infielder to me. Can run and defend but the bat seems really light. Cain hasn't been good since 2018, pass.

The next big money free agent the Yankees sign will be: ____
Derek
12:36
Juan Soto in three years.
Ed
12:37
It seems like this is an unpopular opinion but, what's stopping the Yankees from having Correa, Peraza and Volpe.
Derek
12:37
Hal's willingness to spend.
Ed
12:38
Do you think the Yankees are suffering from risk aversion, it seems like a lot of good players are going to other teams because they were deem "Risks" (the gurriel Brothers, Darvish, Abreu, Céspedes)
Derek
12:40
Really complicated to answer because I'm not so sure what actually is a risk for the Yankees. I know it's cliche to lean on this, but the team is worth what, 4-5 billion now? I don't remember exactly, but there's no contract they can't absorb. If anything, they have been to risk averse on big name free agents. Think Scherzer a few years ago, Machado, Harper, etc.
12:41
The Yankees payroll is essentially flat since 2005. So in that light, they are definitely too risk averse.
Drew

Thoughts on Volpe at #10 in Baseball America? Seems high no?
Derek
12:42
Why's that too high? He had perhaps the best season of any minor leaguer in 2021. There are toolsier players on the list with more upside, but #10 seems more than fair.

If the MLB isn't going to entertain a shift from 6 to 5 years for free agency (assuming reports are correct), what do you think the biggest MLBPA CBA win could be?
Derek
12:43
Fixing service time manipulation. It's too easy to get effectively 7th year of team control. They also need to get better minimum salaries for pre-arb guys.

I FEEL THE SIGHNING OF AROD EXTENSION AND THEN TO FIND OUT HES JUICED A FEW YEARS INN AND THE SIGHNING OF COLE AND VNOW WE KNOW HES BEEN HELPED BY A SUBSTANCE ARE WAY TO SIMILIAR FOR MY LIKING . IM WORRIED CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE
Derek
12:44
Let's take a deep breath here. Cole was amazing for a 50 inning stretch post the substance crackdown and before he hurt his hamstring. People really like to overlook this.

Are there any meaningful rivalries left in baseball? Now that the Astros drama has gone, what is left? Boston / Yankees hasn't been interesting for a few years....maybe LAD / SDP / SFG?
Derek
12:46
I feel like NYY/TB has had some juice in recent years even though it's been pretty lopsided toward the Rays. Short-term rivalries pop up all the time though. Cincy/Cubs for instance.

Look forward to your prospects posts, if you have time.  On Nestor Cortes, expect him to be in the rotation as a 4-5 inning starter?
Derek
12:47
I don't think the Yankees are planning to have him in the rotation to start the season. He's better off as a swingman. I'm sure he'll get a dozen starts or so this year though.

Nettles is not before my time. Great defender. Good hitter. Not worthy of a retired number. Not the top tier of guys on the championship teams (Reggie, Munson, etc.). It would be like retiring Tino Martinez's number. Or Mark Teixeira's. Actually, both of those guys would be more worthy, I think, than Nettles (not that they should have their numbers retired, either).
Derek
12:48
Some seemingly reasonable thoughts based on the question earlier.
Honkin' Hal
12:48
Obviously those of us who follow the team closely are annoyed by the unwillingness to spend, but do you see a scenario where that animus reaches the more casual fans?
Derek
12:49
Hard to envision unless the Yankees string together a few losing seasons, to be honest. Then you'll see attendance and ratings dip.
Bart

Wade was as good as a utility guy/base stealer as anyone else - is there somebody better for that role (and cheaper maybe)
Derek
12:52
Not sure I agree with the premise. Florial could probably fill the pinch runner role just fine late in the season or in the playoffs when you don't have to carry as many pitchers. They have plenty of versatile infielders already otherwise. DJLM, Gio, and Gleyber can handle multiple positions.
Down to the last few minutes here and could use some more questions in the queue. Will hang around for a bit and wait for some more.

Chapman closer this year?
Derek
12:55
Yup. But this will be his last season here.
12:59
I'm gonna call it, everyone. Thanks for coming by. Hopefully we'll have more to talk about soon. MLBPA reportedly will respond to the league's offer soon, so hopefully there's some progress to talk about. Later all.
