Freeman for me. I'd always rather trade prospects for premium positions, not 1B.

12:28
Where does Luis Medina end 2022?
Derek
12:29
Ideally the majors. This is his last option year, which may accelerate a move to the bullpen.

Am I more right than wrong: In order for the Yankees to part with one of their two top SS prospects (Volpe or Peraza) to trade for Olson, then they really need to sign either Correa or Story, since they'd be banking one the one remaining SS making it. So trading for Olson requires signing a good SS. Yes? No?
Derek
12:30
I think your logic makes sense, but of course they should sign Correa or Story regardless of anything else they do.

Mark Teixeira without the shift infield would be a HOF player?
Derek
12:33
I think the injuries at the end did him in more than anything - but regardless, probably on the outside looking in.
If you look at JAWS, guys like Olerud, Helton, Keith Hernandez are ahead of Teix but not in the Hall. Might change with Helton eventually.

Will the Yankees bring in a 5th starter or give a chance to someone already in the system?
Derek
12:36
Teams don't really look the acquire fifth starters. They're going to try to get someone who can slot in behind Cole, or in the middle of the staff. The fifth (and sixth, seventh, etc.) will play out based on health and performance, rather than someone they target to acquire for the role.

What do you think would be a winning package to nab Olsen from the A's
Derek
12:39
MTPS: Oswald Peraza, Deivi Garcia, Austin Wells, and Everson Pereira. Works on the trade values site, at least.

There doesn't seem to be many redeeming qualities for a non-baseball fan to get "hooked" on the sport lately.  HOF, Lockout, etc.  When will the MLBPA, MLB and HOF finally get on the same page to promote and grow the sport better?
Derek
12:43
Forget the HOF - that's not gonna be part of bringing new fans in. Don't count on MLB owners either. The money is too good for them to care right now, hence the lockout. As for the players, I don't really know how much they deserve blame for the popularity? The big thing that irks me is the unwritten rules policing. That definitely hurts but seems to slowly improve over time.

The Farmers Insurance Open is playing Wed-Sat this week so as not to go up against the NFL on Sunday. Wouldn’t MLB be smart to do the same sort of thing in the fall?
Derek
12:44
Had to google what the Farmers Insurance Open is to be honest. I guess that was smart for the PGA? Going up against NFL playoffs isn't easy. But I don't think that same logic applies to MLB, which is hyper regionalized and is up against regular season NFL.

12:45
Best guess:  With a higher luxury tax threshold (and I'm glad the players are finally pushing for his), do you think the Yankees will sign one of Story or Correa?
Derek
12:47
I really have no idea, but I am inclined to think they won't unless we're talking about a significant threshold raise. Cole is the exception, but Hal does not make big FA splurges.
J
12:47
I disagree with your forgetting the HOF.  It gives the sport a chance to celebrate past amazing athletes and accomplishments and give potential new fans (thinking about kids here, not the average adult) a reason to research the sport more.
Derek
12:48
I just don't feel like a kid is going to be intrigued by the HOF without influence of an older relative/parent. If we're talking about drawing in a kid without any family influence, it's gonna be up to the league/PA.
Michael
12:48
Are the extra innings rules reverting back to normal?
Derek
12:49
I don't think that's been determined yet. Could be wrong though.

12:51
Next Yankee HOFer?
Derek
12:52
I guess it *should* be A-Rod, but I don't think that's happening. How about CC?
Yeah, I think Sabathia makes sense unless I'm totally forgetting something.
Michael
12:52
Which Yankee player, past or current would you like to sit down and have a beer with?
Derek
12:53
My gut reaction is David Cone.
Dugo
12:54
Do you think the Yankees remain a Steinbrenner legacy team or do you think there's a strong chance that a new owner comes along down the line?
Derek
12:54
No clue whatsoever. I don't see a sale coming anytime soon though.
Iceman
12:54
One year in, how do you feel about the DJ LeMahieu contract?
Derek
12:55
Not great! How could anyone feel good about him right now?
Jeb
12:55
Post idea: follow up to the championship window closing (?) article - what were the three biggest decisions that impacted the outcome of the window, in your opinion?
Derek
12:56
I'm gonna try to remember to save this one for the mailbag next week so either Bobby or I can address it. Good one.
Michael
12:57
Manny Banueles recently resigned, are there any other former prospects you would like to see have a second chance?
Derek
12:57
Might as well figure out what Andrew Brackman is up to and then bring back Dellin.
12:58
And hey, go check out what Greg Bird did for Colorado in Triple-A last year. Reunion, anyone? Anyone?
Carlos Beltrán
12:59
What do you think would be a winning package to nab Marte ?
Derek
1:00
Something a little better than what I put together for Olson above. Maybe swap in Luis Gil instead of Deivi, for instance. Idk. MTPS.
Alright, I gotta run. Thanks for chatting today, we'll do it again next week, same time, same place.
