Do you think the Yankees are concerned with a big signing this year given the issues with the changing baseball the past few years and how that's impacted offensive output (DJLM)?
Derek
12:33
I think any team would have to be worried about the ball at this point. It has to be aggravating for any front office (and players, of course) to not know how it will affect performance going forward. At the same time, I don't think alone would deter a team from paying up for Correa or Freeman.

12:34
any takeaways from the ZIPS projections released yesterday?
Derek
12:35
I'm going to do a post about it, like I have in past years about all the projection systems. The one thing that caught my eye was Anthony Volpe's projection. I think it was a 92 OPS+ and 22 HR, if I'm remembering correctly. That's a surprisingly good projection for a guy yet to hit Double A.

I would love to see the Yankees sign Schwarber and rotate Judge and Gallo in center with one in a corner, then Schwarber and Stanton in the other corner and the other at DH. Can even give Schwarber some first base at bats if Hicks stays healthy. What do you think?
Derek
12:39
I don't really want to add another corner bat in the outfield, and I think he never played 1B until this year. I'll pass

If you had to sign one current position player on the active roster (not a minor leaguer on the 40 man) to a record-breaking 10 year deal, who would you sign and regret the contract the least?
Derek
12:40
Taking out the minor leaguers on the 40 man really makes this tough. Only option here is Judge, really.

While I think Story on a possible short term deal would be the best case scenario, what a Didi reunion for 1 year? He only got 1 year left on his contract and it looks like the Phillies would gladly move on and get his contract off the books. He was great in 2020 but had a bad year last year. Maybe being back in NY energizes him again, and we know that fans loved him when he was here.  Getting him for next to nothing and spending money/prospects for 1B and P is a better use of resources in my opinion. What do you think?
Derek
12:42
I don't think the Yankees want to take on his 14M salary at this point. He was really, really bad this year and his quality of contact has never been great in the first place. He's not an awful option but I wouldn't be too confident.
His defense has fallen off too.
12:44
Could use some more questions, everyone. If not we can end a little earlier, but I'll hang around.
J
12:44
Same question as before (record-breaking 10 year contract you'd regret the least), but including the rest of the 40 man.
Derek
12:45
Peraza is the best prospect on the 40, so him. But then you're essentially talking about breaking Wander Franco's 185M extension, which, feels like a big stretch for Peraza.

Does Volpe get an invite to spring training ?
Derek
12:47
Ooh, yes I think so.

Baseball has legislated against big market teams like the Yankees for decades now. Then, last year, the Yankees lost a few extra minor league affiliates, further narrowing their strengths. What ways can the Yankees still flex their financial muscle to make a difference?
Derek
12:49
Spend money and absorb the associated penalties w/r/t the luxury tax. They can also keep spending on other things like facilities, expanding front office/analytics, etc.

12:49
Who do you see replacing Wade as the utility man? Cabrera?
Derek
12:50
I don't think that player's on the roster yet. If all goes right though, they have a new 1B and SS which allows DJLM and/or Gleyber to serve in that role more extensively.
We'll see Cabrera this year I think, but he should play fairly regularly in Triple-A rather than sitting on the ML bench.
Rick
12:52
will A-Rod get in the hall eventually?
Derek
12:54
I'll say no. He's got something like 45% of votes on public ballots thus far per @notmrtibbs on Twitter. That's a bit of a hill to climb over the rest of his eligibility, but I think it's been done before. At the same time, the actual suspension probably will prevent him from ever getting in. Plus the media generally doesn't like him.

Buck Showalter once said, "People don't pay to see the Yankees play. They pay to see them win." Will Hal ever realize that the Yankee brand is winning and that part of that cost of business is spending money to assure said winning?

(along those lines, I bought my dad 3 tickets to a home game vs. the Cubs for Christmas. Set me back $500! You can't charge that money for UPPER DECK SEATS and expect fans to be ok with austerity)
Derek
12:55
The Yankees feel pretty recession proof to me. As long as they aren't winning in the 60s-70s games per year, I don't think they're gonna take a big hit financially. Also - $500 for upper deck?

12:55
Judge vs Kyle farnsworth in a fight. Who wins?
Derek
12:56
It's hard to pick against Judge's size but Farnsworth is a big dude too, and we've seen him fight successfuly lol. I'll go Farnsworth, hesitantly
JJ
12:58
I liked the prospects break your heart question from the mailbag this week. Who are some guys from before that time you'd consider?
Derek
12:59
Nick Johnson, I guess Drew Henson, Dioner Navarro. I don't have great memories of who were the top prospects in the late 90s/early 2000s
Jeremy
12:59
Why shouldnt Voit be the starting 1B? The guy can hit. Also, any trade value for Gio? I think his magic is running out …
Derek
1:01
There's no denying he can rake. But I would like a lefty bat who's a good defender, and those options are available. Gio has some but you're not getting that much back.
Jeb

Top prospects - Brien Taylor
Derek

Of course.

That's all I have for today. We'll do this again next week. Thanks everyone.
