Hey everyone. First of hopefully many chats here at VF314. Plenty of questions already in the queue, but please keep them coming!
Sam

Been waiting for a Views weekly chat! Sorry it had to come during a lockout. My question: who do you think the starting shortstop is on opening day? I assume it will not be one of the high priced guys (correa/story).
Derek
12:02
Yeah, I am not confident about Correa/Story given all of the reports that trickled in during the weeks leading up to the lockout. I'm gonna go with...JP Crawford. Mariners sign Correa or Story, then trade Crawford away.

What do you think the chances are of a reunion with Chapman and Britton after this year? Obviously both getting older and not what they used to be, but they've been anchoring the back end of the bullpen for a while. It may be easier to watch them leave with the rise of guys like Lasagna, and management does seem to try to find guys on the margins for high leverage spots, but can't deny that a lot of production would leave with them in free agency.
Derek
12:04
I think they let Chapman go. Too much inconsistency, especially last year. They like Britton a lot but had been trying to dump his salary so, who knows. As long as they're operating under the luxury tax thresholds, they should stop handing out 10-15M AAV deals to relievers IMO.

Seeing as the Yankees have had success with former Rockies (DJLM, Tauchman), are tied to Story, and have long been tied to Rockies in the past(Arenado, Gray), any other Rockies the Yankees should look into if they're put on the market?
Derek
12:05
I'll take German Marquez.

30 years ago Rickey Henderson had a single-game stat line of 0-0, 4 BB, 5 SB, 4 R. Hard to imagine anyone doing that in today’s MLB, but if were to somehow happen, who is the current player most likely to pull it off? How about the most likely Yankee since Rickey?
Derek
12:06
Feels like something that will never, ever happen again. Maybe 2010/2011 Brett Gardner could have pulled that off.

What are the rules for the MiLB Rule V draft? The AAAA draft, lol. For example, an MLB Rule 5 can get hidden on a bench, then return to the minors. What is required to keep an MiLB rule V player?
Derek
12:07
There are no constraints, once you draft someone in the minor league phase, they're yours.

Do the people at this site have any understanding of why the team soured on Voit? Was he just to vocal? Was he just not left-handed enough?
Derek
12:09
Don't think it was anything personality wise. Just hurt too often.
Drew
12:10
Do you think a Judge extension will take place this offseason and if so, what do you think is a realistic framework?
Derek
12:10
$150M/6 years. Wrote about it in the mailbag a month ago (https://viewsfrom314ft.com/yankees-aaron-judge-extension-randy-vasquez...). I'll say yes, it gets done before the end of spring training.

Re: Crawford at SS, would that be such a bad move?
Derek
12:12
He's a terrific defender, so in that sense I'd be happy. Might still be some upside with the bat and he's young. It's just...there are/were better options available that only cost money.

I dug into Gallo’s numbers as a CF, and they’re uniformly strong. The 400ish inning sample size caveat applies - but he has 4 DRS, 4.8 UZR, and 0 OAA suggest he’s at least okay there. And he’s elite in the corners, so it’s not like there’s nothing else there. So why is him playing there a non starter for the team?
Derek
12:14
Most of that time came in 2019. Played 1 inning there in 2020 and 0 this season. I found it odd that the Yankees didn't try him there post-trade, going with Judge instead. That alone might tell us something that the publicly available metrics don't show.
12:16
Hold on one second, my lunch just got here.

12:19
Hi Derek, first time, long time: Is it time for the Yankees to bring back Brian Bruney?
Derek
12:19
Steven! Yes, and give him #99.

12:19
Given the Yankees failure to develop young position players, what is your confidence level that one of the SS prospects will become a good everyday player?
Derek
12:21
Pretty good! The development issues are at the ML level where players (like Gleyber) have stalled out. They're revamping things this year with the coaching staff changes.
Sam
12:22
Are fans underrating Aaron Hicks? I totally get the concerns about his health, but i think he's solid if he's on the field. A big if, but I think people think he's actively bad vs. being injury prone.
Derek
12:23
He's definitely not bad. Quite good in fact. But the issues staying on the field are real and why I'd like to see him as the 4th OFer, replacing Gardner.
John
12:25
What do you think about castellanos or bryant? Haven't heard much rumors about those two
Derek
12:25
Castellanos is not a fit for me but Bryant is intriguing. Can play everywhere including center.
Mark
12:27
Will any of the top Pitching Prospects make it as Starting Pitchers, or are they all destined to be in the Bullpen
Derek
12:28
Who are we talking about here exactly? If we're talking Schmidt/Deivi, those guys sure look like pen arms at this point. Medina's control could force him there too, and some prospect writers seem to like Waldichuk better out of the pen. But on the flip side, Gil, Wesneski, and I may be blanking on others seem like fairly certain starters
Rachel
12:29
Following up on the Voit question, if the only problem is how often he was hurt, how does that explain how under-used he was when he got back? I get that Rizzo deserved to start but wouldn't they have made more effort to get him in the starting lineup?
Derek
12:30
It doesn't explain it. It was really perplexing no doubt, I think my Voit answer is more of a long-term thing.
Drew
12:30
The Yankees have to make some kind of upgrade at Starter right? What do you think they will do?
Derek
12:32
They should. As good as the rotation was in 2021, they shouldn't rest on their laurels. I wouldn't expect anything big though. Another upside play. Rodon could happen.
Handtius
12:33
Are we witnessing the end of the Yankees as a financial powerhouse?
Derek
12:34
No. They'll always be able to sign whoever they want. It's just a matter of when Hal gives the OK.

What do you see as the ceiling for Clint Frazier if he heals and gets it together in Chicago? I’m thinking he becomes a .270 guy with 18 HR and 75 RBI. Really nice but not great. Your thoughts?
Derek
12:37
His ceiling is higher than that.  We more or less saw it in 2020. Odds of getting there just aren't great given his health track record.

Saw this on FG a few weeks ago re trade packages for Olson: "The one rumor I have is a 50 FV, a second who arguably is, and a third mid-level guy"

Do you think Alexander Vargas (50)/Clarke Schmidt(45+)/and then either Austin Wells(45) or Oswaldo Cabrera(40+) is enticing for both sides?

Obviously would like to hang on to Volpe/Peraza at the top as both are closer, and Oakland took back Barreto who was a lower-levels guy in the Donaldson trade

Clarke seems like a guy they target a la Kaprielian, And then you get one of the two mid-level bats who are both upper levels.
Derek
12:40
I don't think you're getting Olson with a prospect headliner who hasn't played above rookie ball yet. And I think the 45+ grade on Schmidt is high at this point, he's just never healthy. I feel like Peraza would have to be part of an Olson deal.
