Idk what the Dodgers would do, but I'd guess other AL East teams might respond by either a) selling/retooling/rebuilding if they think they can't compete with a 350M Yankees team or b) try to keep up and spend more themselves

Any faith Hicks returns to the player he was before all these injuries ?
Derek
12:35
Some. I'm less worried about things like plate discipline, but more worried about his ability to handle CF and hit for power. I'd really like him to be the team's 4th OFer this year (who winds up playing like 120 games, anyway).

Much like the XFL had the race/fight for the ball, what rule would you add to the XLB (Xtreme League of Baseball?)
Derek
12:36
Ever play MLB Slugfest? Let's go with that.
Yung Lockout
12:37
Not really a question but it is insane how MLB is light years behind other leagues in terms of popularity and how little the owners seem to care. Everything they are doing seems counter intuitive in terms of garnering more interest in the game.
Derek
12:38
The MLB owners are bad.
As is the commish.

Any thoughts on potential trade targets for starting pitching? Something like the Taillon trade for a guy with 2+ years left.
Derek
12:40
My brain is not in hot stove mode at all right now so it's hard for me to come up with names on the spot. I know Luis Castillo is an easy one to think of but I would like to give you more outside the box answers, but I just can't.

My local minor league team is owned by the Mets. Is it scabby to go to games if the lockout is still going on? Feels kinda gross but also there's some very cool people who work over there that have no actual affiliation to the Mets.
Derek
12:41
I think it would feel icky for me knowing MLB owners would benefit.

The CBA renews if the owners undid the lockout right? Surely renewing the current CBA is better for the owners than whatever they're negotiating with the players. Wouldn't it be good strategy by the owners to end the lockout and make the players take the PR hit by striking before the playoffs?
Derek
12:43
I don't know that it renews automatically (I don't think it does), but they could play without a contract. I believe this is what happened in 94 pre-strike.

One plus of the lockout - mlb trade rumors and fangraphs MLB/MLBPA economics reporting. Super high quality, imo. The downside is just how depressing the implications are! The gap seems MASSIVE.
Derek
12:44
We definitely have gotten much better coverage than ever before on this subject. Throw Baseball Prospectus in the ring too. I think this is something that is actually helping the players a bit, and perhaps the owners were unprepared for. It used to be a lot easier for owners to make the players look bad.

Ryan Zimmerman retires. While he wasn't as good as Don Mattingly, reminds me a little of him.  Zimmerman was hurt much more, but a great fielder who could hit.  Do you think if Zimm stays healthy he's a HOFer?
Derek
12:47
Decent chance he makes it, yeah. Had 33 BRef WAR through age 28, but then was more or less done. Not a bad comp to Mattingly.
Matt
12:48
Next Yankees number to be retired?
Derek
12:50
That's a tough one now that the dynasty years have all had their numbers retired. Does #52 get retired if CC goes in to the hall with a Yankees hat? I bet #11 will be treated like #21 but not retired. Honestly I wouldn't bet on any of these being retired though. I don't think there's an obvious candidate, at least, not until Judge a) signs an extension and b) wins a WS.
Matt
12:51
Separate question:  Yanks win a WS under Boone, yes or no?
Derek
12:52
Can I punt this question until after how this offseason plays out?
They can win with him, but it honestly depends on how badly Hal wants it, IMO.
The luxury tax will be the death of this team's window.
12:54
Any last questions before we wrap up?
Chip
12:55
I hope Gardner is not brought back.  Nothing against him, but he's a 4th OFer at best now.
Derek
12:56
I wouldn't bet against his return until he retires. It's inevitable.
12:57
He's also still decent. I just would prefer to get a CF upgrade which would relegate Hicks to the 4th OF role and make Gardner redundant.

LeMahieu, Torres, Volpe, Freeman!

Will the rotation have three pitchers named Luis in August?
Derek
12:59
Why stop at three when you can have four? Sevy-Castillo-Gil-Medina.

Alright everyone, it's 1pm and I'm going to call it. Thanks for stopping by, we'll do this again next week.
