Hey everyone. There's still no Major League Baseball, but we're starting to see some minor league camp videos from the beat. Take some solace in that, maybe? Let's chat.
Sam
12:02
Over/Under: 20.5 regular season games lost due to the lockout.
Derek
12:03
I'm going under. I don't think the owners have much appetite for missing games, and the players have already indicated no expanded playoffs if no 162 this season. I'm feeling cautiously optimistic even as the owners whine and beg for mediation when they won't budge at all on their positions.
Ray
12:04
Since the playoff field is expanding whether we like it or not how about this?  A 12 team field where the top 2 seeds get a bye in the WC round which is a best of 3 series played entirely at the park of the 3rd and 4th seeds?
Derek
12:05
Speaking of expanded playoffs - I think this is a decent idea. I think you might have to kill divisions and go with a balanced schedule though. And I don't love getting rid of divisions from a traditional standpoint.

Yankees want a stop gap SS right?  Why not Story for 1 year at 25 million?  He gets to go on the market after the season and the kids aren't pressured to contribute this year.  One of them could even be used to get and arm at the TD.  Win win right?
Derek
12:06
Story on a one year deal would be a good outcome, for sure. It sounds like his pre-lockout ask was through the moon though. Perhaps given the likely short window between a new CBA and start of spring training forces his hand though. I would be down for a 1 year deal.
Moe Howard
12:06
If you had to unretire one Yankee's number, which would it be?  Conversely who's number would you retire that currently isn't?
Derek
12:08
There are way too many retired numbers. I wouldn't have retired 21. Probably did not need to retire 9 either. Also, I'd probably have held off on 20, 46, and 51 unless they got into the Hall.
12:09
Also giving numbers to managers is pretty dumb. Would be nice to have 1, 6, and 37 still around.
Patrick
12:09
Do you think the Yankees are seriously going to pursue Freeman rather than a free agen shortstop due to having Peraza and Volpe? Is that the right move?
Sam
12:09
Seems like Heyman is really pushing the "Yankees in on Freeman" narrative. Does this sound like classic Heyman doing an agent's work for them or does this feel real?
Derek
12:09
Grouping these two questions together.
12:11
First and foremost, it benefits any free agent to mention the Yankees getting involved, so always keep that in mind. That said, it's such a great fit that the Yankees should make a run. It's really shocking that Atlanta dropped the ball here and there are plenty of indications that he's leaving.
As for Freeman over a SS - I'd sign Correa over Freeman if I had to pick. I might go Freeman over Story though.
Clete Boyer
12:12
There is no doubt Correa is a great player, but is there not extreme risk with him related to the Asterisks cheating scandal?  The fans and media will never let it go (and who knows about his teammates).  He'll be asked about it constantly.  Doesn't this have big poison potential to be Jeter/A-Rod 2.0?
Derek
12:13
I think there's some indication that Yankees players would be able to move forward - I believe Judge namedropped Correa as one of the big free agents in a media availability earlier in the offseason. But yeah, the fans will be relentless. I'm sure the media would love to have him be backpage fodder like A-Rod was, but let's keep in mind that A-Rod had a lot of unforced errors that don't seem like things Correa would be up to.
Sam
12:14
Where does Carlos Correa end up? Yankees seem extremely unlikely, so is the most logical end point back in Houston?
Derek
12:16
There are so many places he fits. I wouldn't rule the Yankees out yet though. Maybe the Mariners or Phillies. I dunno.
KB
12:17
Given how large some of the gaps are and the sluggish pace of negotiations, I am increasingly resigned to a lost season and repercussions of the same on the current and future players going forward. Should I really be this low?
Derek
12:17
I'd wait until the end of this week before getting that low. They're meeting daily.
Bill
12:18
This might be blasphemy, but Hal's only flaw is being fixated on the LT.  The team has never bottomed out or even had a losing record during his tenure.  If he had George's desire to win, he'd be as close to a perfect owner as one could ask for.
Derek
12:19
I'd have to think about this more but I feel like the luxury tax has clouded my judgement because it's such an egregious self inflicted decision.
The not bottoming out thing is more of a credit to the FO than Hal.

12:19
is Anthony Siegler still a prospect?  It seems like injuries, the inability to stay on the field, and poor performance have made him basically another first round draft pick bust.  Would he be  included as a piece in trade talks?
Derek
12:20
Catchers can be late bloomers if you want to hold out some hope, but at this point, he's hardly a prospect. He wouldn't fetch anything in a trade right now.
12:21
Wouldn't even help move the needle as a throw in.
Steve
12:21
I realize change is a part of life, but I cannot accept ads on uniforms.  We already got the swoosh.  Is that not enough?  The saying, give 'em an inch, they'll go for a mile, seems to apply here.
Derek
12:22
Brace yourself, because more are coming.
Bryanv21
12:22
I've always felt the players would cave before giving up paychecks if it looked like the season would be shortened, because while owners can afford to lose some money now most players can't.
Derek
12:23
It sounds like the union is pretty...unified right now from top to bottom, and the players we're seeing at these meetings are some of the big earners anyway. I don't think the owners were anticipating this.
Aaron
12:24
What do you expect from the next CBA agreement? Anything you hope for or dread in particular?
Derek
12:25
I think the first question is sorta answered based on the notes at the top of this post, it just depends on how much things will sway in certain directions. As for the second question, I am hoping for a higher luxury tax threshold with lessened penalties, but I have big doubts.
Alex
12:26
Would 6/210 be a fair offer for Judge?  He's 30 this year and had injuries, so the years are less than what Haprer got, but the AAV is higher.
Derek
12:27
That might be where the contract ends up, but I don't think the Yankees would start that high. I think the benchmark is actually Springer's deal (6/150), but it will likely be a bit higher than that.
Steve Sax
12:28
Re-sign Rizzo , Story on a 1 year $30 mln contract and trade for Marte , would you be happy ?
Derek
12:28
Probably but I would be a lot more excited if one of Freeman or Correa were here.
Steve Sax
12:29
Do u believe all these report's about Freeman leaving Atlanta?
Derek
12:29
I don't think Freeman wants to leave, but it seems like he will with the right offer. Could just be trying to leverage Atlanta into upping the ante.
Jack
12:30
If the Cards are out of it in July, could Flaherty be someone to pursue?  It appears like he's not going to be there long term any way.
