Hey everyone, thanks for stopping by. Let's get right to it.

How well would Gary Sanchez have to play for you to want him back in '23?
Derek
12:02
I mean, if he's 17 Gary Sanchez, or even 19 Gary Sanchez, that's pretty great. But there will be other options like Contreras and Narvaez on the market and I suspect the Yankees will go another direction no matter what.

It's frustrating watch Hal clearly not understand what makes the Rays or Dodgers work. The Rays can contend with some degree of consistency because they trade guys before they get too expensive, then develop the fresh prospects into guys who can get traded before they get too expensive. Meanwhile, the Dodgers are "the New York Yankees of baseball" in that they've figured out how to build a strong farm while contending regularly (a model Cashman has been doing his best to imitate) while having the spine to go all in when the window is open. Much as I appreciate Cashman for adapting to the best of his abilities with the times again and again, it feels like being a GM is a younger man's game, except Hal is content with the status quo. Am I being too pessimistic (I could use some good news)?
Derek
12:04
You're assigning a bit too much blame on Cashman. For one, he's not been allowed to spend in a way the Dodgers have (and even the Dodgers have done the luxury tax reset thing, I believe). Two, while keeping Frazier/Andujar has gotten him some (deserved) criticism, we can't act like he's held on too long to prospects. He's made deals for Taillon, Gallo, Rizzo, etc. over the years. And last thing: the Yankees should never be trading guys before they get too expensive.

Think Bauer is a by low candidate for the Yanks?
Derek
12:04
God no.

12:05
i always hated the idea of trading away good prospects at the deadline for a player who will be a free agent , am i crazy to want to re sign Rizzo and spend the money elsewhere ?
Derek
12:06
I'd be fine with Rizzo if it meant Correa and a move for Reynolds/Marte or some other CFer.
Shep
12:07
Why not Bauer? Cy Young winner last time he pitched, in his prime, cerebral guy. He fits perfectly right under Cole at #2!
Derek
12:07
Come on.

Maury Brown reported that MLB is expected to announce a delay to spring training on Thursday.  Not surprising, but not good either.  No one really knows how many games will be lost, right?
Derek
12:08
Nope, no idea. I mean they could probably still get a full 162 even if spring training is delayed a couple weeks.
Sam

With the NL DH a foregone conclusion (?), is it conceivable that Stanton could generate enough interest for the Yankees to seriously consider moving him? His contract isn't *that* onerous, and  in paying some of it down for other teams, this could work out. Pay down $5M a year, and consider that "Luke Voit" extra salary and then all of a sudden you've got space for Voit, Olson/Freeman/Rizzo, and more payroll flexibility.
Derek
12:09
I'd rather have Stanton. Plus keep in mind that Stanton has a NTC and as he's shown, he will use it.

The players and owners are negotiating over a variety of topics: Luxury Tax, anti-tanking, service time manipulation, etc. If the players only won on one of these big-ticket items, which would you like it to be?
Derek
12:11
Selfishly as a Yankees fan, I'd want a big raise in the luxury tax. But I think anti-tanking and service time manipulation are more important in the grand scheme. Ultimately, I guess anti-tanking measures would be the best of them all. Need better integrity of competition, badly.
John
12:12
What were the 2 best decisions and 2 worst decisions the yankees made in the Aaron Judge era (from a GM/Ownership perspective)?
Derek
12:13
The Boone hiring and the two luxury tax resets are probably the worst off the top of my head. Let me think about the best...
Gerrit Cole signing, for one.
12:14
The Stanton trade was pretty great too. Take a look now at what the return was now.
Moe Howard
12:14
Whoops----hit send early.   How would you view these past Yankees fitting into the current Yankees short stop need:  Bucky Dent and Tony Kubek.
Derek
12:16
Uhh. This is way before my time. Quick glance has them both as pretty below average hitters relative to the environment they played in. I guess it depends on who was the better defender?
Marty
12:17
do you buy the freeman rumor?
Derek
12:17
I mean, the Yankees would be negligent not to check in. He's such a good fit. Lefty w/ power, makes a ton of contact, good defender.
So I buy it but I still feel like he will go back to Atlanta
Jeb
12:18
Would you be willing to pay the price for Olsen, assuming it requires trading a nyy top 3 prospect, plus perhaps 1 top 10 and an additional top 15? If so, what would be too high of a price for you?
Derek
12:19
I don't mean to come off as rude but I feel like we get a variation of this question weekly. My answer is the same: I'd consider it if getting Reynolds/Marte isn't feasible AND they sign one of Correa/Story. I really hate trading prospects for a 1B when you can either sign one in FA (Freeman, Rizzo) or keep what you already have (Voit).
Jeb
12:20
No worries Derek - not rude. Tough to think up new Q's when baseball has become a total void. Alas....
Derek
12:21
Naturally. That's why I'm happy to talk NBA deadline if anyone wants grinning
Rudy
12:21
can you envision the Yankees trading Judge at the deadline?
Derek
12:21
What year was it that Cano walked? Was that after 13 or 14? Not remembering off the top of my head, but anyway: Hal didn't let Cashman deal Cano that deadline. I wonder if he'd reconsider now, especially if the Yankees are struggling
Sam
12:22
OK fine, speaking of expensive players in their 30s who could use a new home - what would it take for you to get excited about Cano taking over at 1st base?
Derek
12:23
Speak of the devil. I mean it would be fun in a nostalgic sense, but it would take the rest of the roster getting big upgrades before rolling the dice like that.
Jeb
12:25
Other than not wanting to hand out big contracts, isn't Correa perfect for Boston? Shift X to 3rd, throw Devers to 1st, realign next year when Cassas is ready and X is gone? I'd be more upset if I were a Boston fan!
Derek
12:26
Correa is a terrific fit on almost any team, frankly. He's the kind of guy you figure out how to fit on the roster even if you already have a shortstop.
Jeb
12:26
Imagine a scenario where the Yankees are struggling so much that they trade Judge. I think that'd imply 1) Judge is still awesome but wants to explore FA; 2) 2021 offense becomes 2022 offense; and 3) Yankees starting  pitchers don't save the team like they did in 2021. What do you think the (somewhat realistic)  conditions need to be for Hal to be willing to trade Judge?
Derek
12:28
So I guess one of the conditions would be that the Yankees already handed out a big contract this offseason (i.e. Freeman or Correa) and Judge's extension asking price is too steep for Hal's taste (or it makes adhering to the luxury tax difficult). Obviously they'd also need to be out of the playoff race, maybe with some key injuries that make a standings deficit hard to overcome.
Sam
12:29
Which was more believable: Bubba Crosby being the everyday center fielder (I still blame him for the mix-up with Sheffield in Anaheim. Bernie wouldn't have made that mistake!) or Shelley Duncan the starting 1B
Derek
12:29
Why don't I remember the Shelley Duncan starting 1B thing? Was that for the 09 team before Teixeira?
