Hey everyone, it's great to see the question queue loaded with questions before even getting started. Clearly you all are very excited for baseball to be back, and not mad about the Yankees or anything. Let's get to it.

Where does DJ play now?  With 1B, 2B and 3B now locked in, where does he play?  Can he play LF?  And who leads off when he doesn't play?
Derek
12:02
He's going to rotate between all non-SS infield positions. You're going to see days where Donaldson/Rizzo DH, Gleyber needs a day off or slides to SS to spell IKF, etc. Of course, one more trade involving Gleyber could be in the works that gives LeMahieu a full time role at 2B.

I heard some reporting that MLB and the Union were talking about rule changes banning the shift, but I can't find confirmation that it's included in the CBA. What's the current shift rules for the CBA?
Derek
12:02
Those changes can't be implemented until 2023, and the league has the majority of votes on rule change issues. So you probably won't see it until next year.

Tell me what I have to be excited about as a Yankee fan this year. Honestly.
Derek
12:04
So I am as frustrated as many of you are that the Yankees aren't going for any of the big SS or Freeman. But this team is still going to be really good, I think. The infield defense is terrific. The offense *should* have positive regression from last season. The pitching is deep.
Duffy

I think there is an easy path to 300 ABs for Voit before injuries, pinch hitting for the catcher every night, DHing when someone in the OF gets a day off, etc. Wouldn't it be worth keeping him?
Derek
12:05
It's not a crazy thought. The bench right now is Rortvedt/Higgy, DJLM, Voit, Locastro, which is pretty good. The starters don't have a great track record of staying healthy. And you'll need to PH for IKF and the catchers late in games anyway.

12:06
Who has a better chance of hitting 35 bombs and making us regret letting him go more: frazier or sanchez?
Derek
12:06
Frazier. It sounds like Gary will split time with Jeffers behind the plate in Minny, and I guess DH too, but it's really hard to hit that many homers as a starting catcher anyway.
Patrick
12:07
Do you think there is a chance that they sign Story or Correa? IFK should not block players of that caliber.
Derek
12:07
No, the Yankees have made it very clear that they are keeping the seat warm for Volpe/Peraza.
Andrew
12:08
Gleyber, Dominguez, Medina for Jose Ramirez who says no
Derek
12:08
Cleveland says no. That's a terrible offer.
12:09
Sorry that came across harsh, but yeah, it's not close.
Jeff
12:09
Any chance something happens at C or are we really rolling with Higgy and Rortvedt?
Derek
12:09
I'd try to pry Murphy from the A's.
Luke
12:10
Who bats leadoff with roster as currently constructed
Derek
12:11
Hmmm, I bet they put Judge up there again.
MBN
12:11
Do you think Rizzo's drop-off after his hot start when he came over to the Yankees was related to his COVUD issues, and the aftereffects? Otherwise, why would the Yankees go there for 2 more years? Much more appealing options were available.
Derek
12:12
Don't know, but it's possible. Keep in mind Rizzo can opt out after this year, FWIW. It's pretty clear to me that the Yankees aren't looking to make long-term commitments, which is why they went Rizzo over Freeman and Donaldson instead of a SS signing.
John
12:14
Is Torres the backup SS right now? Or do you think there's going to be a tyler-wade type on the bench?
Derek
12:14
By default yeah. They could always summon Peraza/Cabrera from the minors if need be too. I still think there's another move coming.
Andy
12:15
Obviously attention is being paid to the future as much as the present with this offseason. SS seems obvious to forecast. But, What do the Yankees look like down the road? I'd guess 1B is always a plug with whats available. 3rd 2nd and Catcher seem to be a figure it out later? Is that the impression everyone is getting?
Derek
12:16
I think you'll see Austin Wells moved to 1B in the next year or two, assuming he hits well enough. Catcher is a mystery to me now, but maybe they pursue Contreras in the offseason if no trade is made. The next big time prospect is Antonio Gomez who's a long way away. 2nd/3rd could be Volpe/Peraza/Gleyber depending on who lands where.
Jeb
12:17
So, where do you think the most logical landing spots are for Voit? I get that the return won't be exciting, but perhaps having the opportunity to DH full time can keep him healthy. If I had that position open, I'd want to trade for him.
Derek
12:18
I thought Milwaukee would be the place, but they're putting McCutchen in the DH role. Philly just signed Schwarber so that seems out. I'd have to think about this a little more but I'm sure they'll find a landing spot. Actually, Colorado would be really fun for Voit. He'd crush it there.
MikeySea
12:19
Torres, Voit and prospects to Arizona for Marte and MadBom?
Derek
12:19
Why would you want Bumgarner now?
Peter 2
12:20
What kind of season does Louis Cefarino need for the Yankees to exercise his option?
Derek
12:20
A+ reference. It's a $15 million option, I think. As long as he stays healthy (think 25+ starts) I think it's a no brainer.
Dave
12:21
Is there a reason to think Rortvedt can hit? I would so rather live through another year of Gary angst.
Derek
12:21
By the numbers he's posted in the minors, no. But have you seen his biceps? That's where the hope lies.
Dan
12:22
What are the chances that either Volpe or Peraza have a 3+ WAR season before 2025?
Derek
12:22
Not as good as a lot of people seem to think. I'm pretty confident it will happen, but Correa, Story, Seager, etc. are slam dunks for multiple 3+ win seasons by 2025.
Westchester Dave
12:24
If you had to rank the four likeliest transactions that the Yankees will make between now and opening day in order (i.e. likely, not what we would like to see), what would they be?
Derek
12:24
Voit trade, Gardner re-signed, catcher acquisition, having a hard time coming up with a fourth one
Moe Howard
12:26
The Yankees now have two nearly automatic outs in the 8th/9th spot of their lineup.  Is this a championship offense?
Derek
12:27
I'm gonna hold judgement because I'd like to think they are going to make one more move to address that. It's definitely a concern of mine, but 1-7 is pretty damn awesome on paper nonetheless.
