Do you think the lack of moves at the deadline in 2019 and 2020 was because of Hal?  I get he sets the budget, but does he stop Cashman from dealing prospects?
Derek
12:34
2019 definitely looks bad in retrospect. They needed more pitching and basically stood pat. 2020 was such a weird season, it's kind of a blur for me and what happened isn't exactly in the forefront of my mind.
And we knew the 19 deadline was bad when it happened too, to be clear. I think everyone realized it. Wasn't a MMQB type of thing.

Its been reported 12 team playoff brings 85 mil in revenue and 14 brings 100 mil. Is that annual revenue or over the next CBA length? Why would the MLBPA not couple that uniform advertising and split those new revenue streams 50/50. This would allow them to drive their share to younger players as they see fit?
Derek
12:37
This is the reported ESPN deal, and I believe it would be annual revenue. And unless I'm totally misunderstanding things, I don't think the salaries really correlate with existing and potential revenues. Instead the players have to fight for higher league minimums, pre-arb bonus pools, and more arb-eliigble players.

Sweeney was drafted in large part because of his bat.  Do you think he repeats Low A because he didn't dominate there and is June 2023 a realistic time for his ML debut if he doesn't get hurt?
Derek
12:38
He'll probably start there but he could easily push his way up.
12:39
2023 seems a little aggressive for a debut. If he goes full Volpe this year, then yeah. But that's a lot to ask obviously.

Hi Derek, if you could take one member of the 2016 Yankees and use them as a playable character in a video game, which player would you choose and what video game?
Derek
12:42
Feels like Brian McCann might be a good Super Smash character, kinda in the light of Wario or Bowser in terms of big, strong, powerful, but kinda slow.
12:43
Oh, probably would want to throw Aaron Hicks into a golf game.

What is the better Yankee Stadium food, Mighty Quinn's BBQ or the steak sandwich?
Derek
12:43
I've never had either of them. I usually just got a sausage and peppers or a hot dog.
12:44
Is Mighty Quinns actually good? I've heard Lobels is good but never was willing to wait in line for it
12:45
It sure would be nice if Yankee Stadium had better food and beer options, btw.

I've read that the Yanks are connected to Brandon Mayea in next year's IFA class.  I also hear chatter about an IFA draft coming.  Since that didn't enter into the CBA negotiations, he should be signed in about 11 months, right?
Derek
12:47
Well, the owners pushed for it in negotiations this week. Hell Manfred even mentioned it yesterday in his press conference, talking about how it would help put an end to the abuses of the current system (or ya know, they could enforce rules they already have in place).
That being said, I know nothing about Mayea, so sorry, I don't have a good answer here.

What’s your take on the Derek jeter situation?
Derek
12:51
Seems like Bruce Sherman pulled money off the table in free agency and Jeter was none too pleased. There could be more to it, but that seems to make sense.
Chip
12:51
2023 seems aggressive, but college bats can move up the ranks quickly if they mash in the minors.  Think Bregman and Conforto.  If Sweeney's bat is advanced, he could force the issue by next year.  Of course, he has to prove he can do it.
Derek
12:52
The only thing is that he didn't play the best competition in college. But there are a ton of publications saying that he's a guy to watch for a breakout this year, so that may not matter.

I'm a lifelong fan of 40+ yrs and I'm  starting to not care about baseball. Any advice?
Derek
12:53
Well, there are more baseball leagues than just MLB, so I'm not sure your interest in baseball is waning, but rather, MLB. You could always try to get into a different league or collegiate ball, but I realize that's easier said than done.
12:54
I tried to do that in 2020 and it did not really go well for me. I'd like to try again this year, but we'll see.
12:55
I got an empty question queue and five min left, so shoot whatever else you have before I wrap up.

When is Taillon set to return?  I almost forgot he was on the team.
Derek
12:56
Some time in May.
Alex
12:58
Would fans love it if Bezos bought the team?
Derek
12:58
Lol. I'm sure plenty would. Uncle Stevie would become Uncle Jeff.
Joey
12:59
I love the barnstorming idea. Any indication MLBPA has considered that?
Derek
12:59
Not at the moment. Would be really fun though.

See the NYPOST report that Correa's comments lit a fire under Jeter and he wants to return to baseball? I actually laughed out loud at that. Then Arod posted batting practice to his twitter last night. Stopgap shortstops!!
Derek

Lol was this a ny porch sports thing
I had to unfollow Arod everywhere on social media because he's pretty insufferable online, so I missed that.

Alright, that's all the time I have today. Thanks for stopping by. We'll chat again next week.
