don’t the ever increasing salaries for top players also restrict what the salaries for the lower tiered guys? If players want to raise the floor for yearly salaries, isn’t it fair for owners to create some form of a cap as well?
Derek
12:28
No. With no hard cap it's the owner's discretion / determined by the CBA. The pre-arb salaries are laughably undermarket and the owners make a killing on them. Ditto arbitration eligible players.
If you want a floor and cap system, there needs to be legitimate accounting for revenues that makes a fair split.

Any chance Steve Cohen running a $300MM payroll will encourage Hal to be less thrifty?  Frankly, I’m concerned a higher base CBT might encourage Hal to spend less if he thinks he can stay under.
Derek
12:29
Nope, I don't think Hal is emotional like that. He loves to talk about how he's a finance guy. I'm pretty sure he will continue to try to avoid the tax when he can.

Do you think given the way the lockout has worked out that the Yankees will use that as an excuse to just  stick with Hicks in center and Gio at short and make no real changes?
Derek
12:30
I think we're more likely to see Hicks in center than Gio at short. But I also am not expecting a big ticket SS.
Ryan
12:31
Strikeouts keep going up each year.  Pitchers are simply too good for this trend to not continue.  Would you be in favor of lowering the mound again to see if that helps?
Derek
12:32
That might be worth a shot. I also am curious to see what an actual enforcement of a pitch clock would do.
MikeD
12:33
Why not give Peraza a shot straight out of ST?
Derek
12:34
That's a huge gamble. As much of a well regarded prospect he is, there are concerns about his pitch recognition still. His defense seems ready but it's not fair to overmatch him out of the gate, IMO. You could just sign Iglesias if you want plus D and little offense to start the year.
Rafi
12:34
Thoughts on Raimel Tapia as a trade candidate to fill the fourth OF/upside play like Hicks many years before? MTPS, but I assume his trade value isn't too high. Thoughts on what a trade for him would cost?
Derek
12:35
Eh. I don't think he's really a CF option. The Rockies are a mess so it may not take much to get him. Just not my first option.
Ed
12:35
What is your opinion on high level pitching prospects? Seems like it's a make or break year for most of them.
Derek
12:37
I think Deivi, Gil, and Medina are in their last option year this season, so it's definitely very important for them. I'm most concerned about Deivi. The floor is pretty high for Gil and Medina IMO because their stuff translates well to a late inning bullpen role, at the least. I'm less worried about them carving out some sort of role.
12:38
Somehow Clarke Schmidt has 2 options left per FanGraphs, but it would be nice for him to stay healthy for once
Mike
12:38
Kevin Pillar a good pair with Hicks if the Gardy years end?
Derek
12:39
Pass. He really can't hit.
Greg
12:39
How would you manage Sevy's innings?  Early games count, but you want him to have plenty of bullets for an October run.
Derek
12:40
To be frank, I don't think they are going to put a cap on him or anything. They'll work him back carefully, but if all goes well, he's gonna be a full go the rest of the season. They have a club option for 2023 so I see this going one of two ways: he's great and the innings aren't a big deal, so they pick up the option. Or two, he struggles/can't stay healthy and he's a FA.
Anthony
12:41
The proposed international draft the number 1 international pick would have a slot value of 5.5 million which is comparable slot value of the 7th pick in the domestic draft - any reason for the disparity? Besides exploiting international signees?
Derek
12:42
I don't know enough about this to give a good answer. I'm sure it all comes down to the owners trying to save a buck though.
Steven Tydings
12:42
Hello, Derek! Which members of the current roster would work best for a buddy comedy? I'll go with Giancarlo Stanton and Nestor Cortes Jr.
Derek
12:43
I really wish Tanaka was still on the team because apparently he and Luis Severino were tight. I'd want it to be with two players who we know are really close.
Ed
12:43
Over/ under 3.6 ERA for Albert Abreu in the bullpen?
Derek
12:44
I don't love ERA for relievers, but over. His control is not good enough.
MikeD
12:45
So do you think the lockout ends today and are you looking forward to doing a chat about baseball, not labor laws?!
Derek
12:46
I think it does. I fell for the trap a week ago and felt like an agreement was near, so I don't want to fall for it again. But it does seem reasonably closer this time around?
Considering I'm not a labor expert or a lawyer it will be a nice reprieve, sure. But it's important to discuss nonetheless. It's been nice to see a more unified stance against the owners this time around, and I don't think we should just let down once a new deal is hammered out.
12:47
What else is on everyone's mind? Surprised I haven't gotten a question about the new playoff format proposals yet.
Tim
12:48
MTPS, but Peraza, Medina, Pereira, and some low level prospect for Castillo.  Who says no?
Derek
12:49
The Reds
Vuke Loit
12:49
T/F Luke Voit and his 137 OPS+ as a Yankee has become underrated by both the Yankees and MLB?
Derek
12:51
False. At this point I think we all know he's a terrific hitter. The issue is his inability to stay on the field, and he does have defensive drawbacks. The fact that Freeman/Olson are available is what's driving anyone's sentiment about moving on from VOit, I think.
JonInSTP
12:51
Thoughts on the playoff proposals?
Derek
12:52
I really don't want more teams in the playoffs, period. Really need expansion some point soon, especially if it gets up to 14 teams.
I'll be OK with 12 or 14 teams as long as there are distinct advantages for division winners. That's why I like the idea of ghost wins or byes.
12:53
Maybe this is drastic but under the pre-existing format, I'd like to have the WC game winner never play a home game in the division series.
Kenny
12:53
Am I the only one worried that a 14 team field will see a sub .500 or barely above .500 team make it too often?  I get why they went from 2 to 4 to 8 to 10.  But at some point, there will be diminishing returns.
