Hey everyone, excited to be doing this during a game for the first time. Maybe we'll do it again if this goes well. First pitch is in about ten minutes, but we're getting started now.

What is your opinion on Gleyber Torres?
I think he is really unlucky offensively and does a pretty good job defensively.
Derek
1:02
Disagree on both ends. The offensive potential is there but his confidence is shot. The bunt attempts make that crystal clear.
Defensively, he's just not good. Better at second base, yeah, but he's still not better than average, if that.
Eric
1:03
Does the team really believe the offense is better than it's showed the last two seasons or are they committed to "good enough to make the playoffs" and the messaging is just PR?
Derek
1:03
Sure, they believe it, at least for the 1-7 hitters in the everyday lineup. Give them truth serum and there's no way they actually think Higgy or IKF can actually hit.
And yeah, I acknowledge IKF has been better of late, but he's a singles hitter with nothing else.
Chris Carter

Is there a concern that Donaldson's strikeout rate is so much higher so far this season than his career average?
Derek
1:04
It's early, but things can go south for players entering their late 30s quickly. I'd give him more time though, and I think Matt is planning on writing about Donaldson soon.
David Williams

The Yankee offense looks impotent. However, offense appears down across the league. Do you think it's the short ST, the universal humidor, or did MLB deaden the ball?
Derek
1:06
It's a combination of all those things, possibly. The one thing you didn't mention is how pitchers just keep getting nastier and nastier. Hitting is harder than ever, I think.
Dansby SwanSong

I know it's still April, but the league is hitting .230/.309/.369/.678 so far.  Historically when offense is down, interest in the game is also down.  What would you suggest for increasing offense?
Derek
1:07
Good question to follow up with. Again, it might be time to do something to make it more difficult on pitchers. I'm not a fan of moving the mound back, but I wonder if lowering it would help. I really don't know if shift bans will help much, though I'm not opposed to that either. I just think pitchers are getting so much tougher to hit.

Did the order come from above that Andujar should play LF at Scranton?  He played there yesterday in the first game of Scranton's doubleheader, and hit a homer.  He was DH in second game and got 2 hits.  He is batting over .300.  What has to happen to get Andujar in LF in place of Gallo?
Derek
1:09
It's a result of him being bad in the infield, nothing more really. Gallo will have to get hurt or traded for Andujar to play in the majors everyday. Anyway, I would not make much of a 27 y/o's 35 PAs in Triple-A.

Thoughts on Heyman's report today re: Gallo trade to Padres?  Early signs support the suggestion the Gallo in pinstripes experiment may be an abject failure.  Regardless of how things go over the next few months - for him or the team - do you think Gallo will be a Yankee after the trade deadline?
Derek
1:11
I saw the Heyman report too, but wasn't that something previously rumored a few months ago? I didn't think this was new news. Anyway, I could see Gallo dealt by then if he doesn't turn things around, especially because he will be a FA after the season.

Do the Yankees actually have their taxi squad traveling with them on this road trip? If so, does anyone know the identity of the players currently constituting the taxi squad?
Derek
1:11
Not sure on either.
Big Mike on the bump for Detroit!

Move the Yankees need to make right now to get back on track? Start Trevino over Higgy? Stop playing Gleyber or IKF? Call up Peraza and/or Cabrera? The flaws of their offseason and team building philosophy are really shining through early on...
Derek
1:13
The 8/9 spots stink right now, but for things to get back on track, the actual good hitters need to hit.
And yeah, I know IKF has been a little better of late.
Pitch_Out

I'm of two minds: the offense appears to be a variant of last year's frustrating bunch that doesn't look like it'll be capable of winning this division. At the same time, everyone else in the division is going through similar early season frustrations and we're keeping pace. worry or no?
Derek
1:15
Fair to worry about things like the 8/9 spots and Boone's management, but I'm not ready to worry about other stuff yet.
Steve from Philly
1:15
Yesterday they started Stanton in RF, Judge in CF, Hicks in LF. Why not play Stanton in LF, rather than playing Hicks and Judge out of position? He played LF last year and was fine. I understand wanting to have a better fielder in LF in Yankee Stadium, but this was in Detroit.
Derek
1:15
Might just be a consistency thing.
David Williams
1:16
Is Boone trying to get some consistency by keeping the top 5 hitters the same for the Detroit series? Will it work?
Derek
1:16
I'm sure that's the goal, but who's to say it will work? I don't think it hurts though.
Bart
1:17
Could we realistically get much for Gallo and Gleyber at the deadline? What could be expected - a couple prospects?
Derek
1:18
Don't expect much. Maybe more for Gleyber since he has a couple of years before free agency, but his value is in the dumps. Gallo will be a rental and fetch very little.
Rizzo keeps swinging a hot bat.
Pitch_Out

April MVP? Gotta be Rizzo right?
Derek
1:19
I'll give it to the bullpen as a group.

How do you think Cashman would grade his own offseason? Would he admit he screwed up or does he actually think he outsmarted everyone
Derek
1:21
He's not going to admit he screwed up on April 21st. That's just not his style. Does he have regrets after seeing the deal Correa signed? Maybe.
1:22
Monty on the hill, will he be the first Yankee starter to go 6 innings this season? Would be nice.
Andrew Heaney
1:22
Bet you wish you kept me now.....
Derek
1:23
This assumes that the Yankees could have actually unlocked Heaney in the way the Dodgers did.
1:24
It kinda proves that the idea to target him last summer wasn't bad, but they couldn't execute. I do wonder if that was tougher because it was midseason, whereas the Dodgers had spring training to get him right.
