Hey everyone, I somehow just got 5+ hours of sleep with a week old baby in the house. I'm feeling pretty good and depending on how many questions we have, I could go longer than an hour today. Let's get to it.
Roger

Which rookie player will have the best season?
Derek
12:03
Among the entire league or just the Yankees? If MLB, I'm going with Witt though that seems like a very safe choice. For the Yankees, I was going to say Schmidt but I don't know if he's technically a rookie.

I love Bird but isnt he redundant with Guzman already in AAA ?
Derek
12:04
Kinda, but there's also the DH spot. Also I'm sure Guzman has a different opt out date than Bird.

Ideal opening day lineup (or if there was a one game playoff)? I know this is probably not what the Yankees will do, but I would sit Hicks and go with: 2B - DJ, 1B - Rizzo, CF - Judge, RF - Stanton, 3B - Donaldson, LF - Gallo, DH - Gleyber, C - Higgy and SS - IKF. I like the idea of Hicks off the bench to spell Stanton in the OF and bring a switch hitter off the bench. Not crazy about Gleyber as a DH, but this is the best defensive lineup - and there is no way I'm putting him at short (plus you know Dad strength now he will bang).

I'm not too worried about lineup order, to be honest. I don't really want to play Judge in center though, at least over an extended stretch. But since you said one game playoff or opening day only, it's fine. You put DJ in the leadoff spot -- if he's "back", then that's definitely the spot I want him in too.

Since it's pitching, pitching and more pitching that helps a team win big, with the expanded playoffs in 2022, there may be less dealing at the trade deadline.  Who do you see at the top pitchers who may be available mid-season?  And if Higgy falls back to earth during the regular season, is their a legit catcher who might also be had?  One other item -- would you take a flyer on JD Upton for for backup OF?
Derek
12:09
Montas if he's not dealt in the next day or two. You've put me on the spot here for other pitchers and I'm blanking though.
As for catchers, maybe Willson Contreras. And last, no on Upton. Don't need another RHH who's a corner bat/DH.

Any word on how carrying 2 more players until May1 affects the luxury tax? Wouldnt teams who were right on the edge of the next threshold be going over it by having to pay 2 more players for a month?
Derek
12:10
I'd imagine they count, but I don't think it's going to add all that much to the tax payroll since they're minimum salary players for just one month.
Be right back - need a minute.

How many at bats will Greg Bird see at the major league level this year?
Derek
12:12
I'll put the O/U at 49.5. Rizzo is usually pretty durable, and I'd imagine they'd slide DJLM to first before calling up Bird (or Guzman). Plus we know Bird is liable to get hurt himself, unfortunately.
Nick
12:13
Who are you taking for the next 2 years...Lasagna or Graterol?
Derek
12:13
Loaisiga.
Nick
12:13
Who do you think gets DFA'd for Marwin? Is it Florial?
Derek
12:14
There could be one more last minute trade in the works (Andujar?). They could try to pass Rosario through waivers too.
Dansby SwanSong
12:15
Still no word on a contract for Judge.  Will Hal & Co. really pass on this when Judge is the face of the franchise?
Derek
12:15
I'm betting on an announcement tomorrow morning.
David Williams
12:16
I know Kiner-Falefa hits an "empty" 270. But don't the low K numbers help? The Yankees sent up a lineup of stacked with high-K guys and got exposed. Maybe someone with contact skills will balance out the lineup
Derek
12:17
They help in the sense that he could have a huge BABIP spike for an extended period and hit like 320 for a month or two. His OBP and SLG are still going to be so low that it's still not all that great, but it will look terrific.
Mark
12:17
Who will have the most relief appearances out of the 'pen this year?
Derek
12:17
Chad Green
Caleb
12:17
Congrats, Hope mom and baby are doing well! How many AL East teams make the playoffs?
Derek
12:18
Thanks! I think three. I think one of Tampa or Boston doesn't make it.
Nick
12:19
Are you surprised Austin Wells didn't get a AA assignment?
Derek
12:20
Not really. He only had 40ish games in High-A last year. Plus Breaux is at Double-A. If Wells does what we think he can do, he'll be up in Somerset in no time.
Sebastian
12:21
What's a more concerning situation: Centerfield or catcher?
Derek
12:21
Catcher.
Drew
12:22
When is German due back?
Derek
12:22
It's not really clear, he's on the 60-day IL so maybe by June if all goes well
Down on the Yanks
12:25
Least exciting opening day in a while! Kinda bummed post lockout and the FA activity
Derek
12:26
I kinda felt that way for a little while but I'm really excited now. I think it's possible to separate the disdain for Hal while still liking this team a lot.
Nick
12:26
Do you think Alexander Vargas is a 40-man add after the season? Looked good but raw in the game yesterday
Derek
12:27
Yeah, I think so. Too good of a prospect, and he could get up to Tampa/HV by end of year.
Steve
12:30
chances Falefa finds something ala didi and people become less frustrated without Correa?
Derek
12:31
It's certainly possible, but Didi also had the short porch in his favor.
Ed
12:31
The rays clearly didn't wanted to improve this off-season huh?
