They tried for Freeman *wink wink*
Mark

Let's say, for the first half of the year, that Volpe rakes at AA, and IKF doesn't hit his weight. Is there any possibility that Volpe gets the promotion straight to the majors?
Derek
12:33
Sure, skipping Triple-A isn't unheard of. But Peraza may get the first shot if he's handling his business.
Drew
12:33
If he's healthy, do you think Nestor makes it through the year in the rotation? In other words, do you really believe in him as a solid option?
Derek
12:36
Probably not because he's so flexible in terms of the roles he can play. He's more than capable as a fifth starter, but he may be more valuable as a swingman. THat said, pitchers get hurt (news at 11), and that could force him to stick.
Nick
12:37
Why didn't we see Luis Medina at all this spring?
Derek
12:39
Because of a focus on getting the MLB players and players fighting for an MLB spot ready. If we had a full 6 week spring training, we may have seen Medina.

On paper, how do the dodgers stack up with the best teams ever...got to be up there with the 98 yanks, not quite the '27 yanks though
Ed
12:39
Am I wrong by admitting that even if the off-season was incredibly disappointed the team is improved even if just a little?
Derek
12:40
Whoops, didn't mean to post two questions in a row, but I'll answer both.
12:41
It's wayyyyy too early to comp the Dodgers to a team that won 114 regular season games. They obviously look great, but let's pump the brakes.
And the team certainly looks improved over 2021.

With the potential Judge new contract we would have him, Cole, Stanton all at 30 mil/year plus. How much would this impact future FA signings? If we end up with a glaring need like pitching, would Hal buy into a higher payroll?
Derek
12:44
Keep in mind that Chapman and Britton will be off the books very soon, and Judge will effectively fill those slots in the payroll. I think the Yankees can spend less on the 'pen and still have a great group back there. So extending Judge may not have as major repercussions as you might think.

Will they get a Judge deal done?!!!
Derek
12:45
Yes!
Betting on tomorrow morning.
Michael
12:46
Given what Carlos Correa and Jose Ramirez just signed for, do you think the market has shifted post-lockout or are these just strange outliers?
Derek
12:47
I missed the Ramirez extension, so thanks for letting me know. Does seem below market but from a quick look, he really wanted a NTC, so maybe that helped. Anyway, I don't think Ramirez/Correa relate because Correa was actually a free agent.

Thoughts on the rotation?  Fangraphs projected as the most valuable by WAR.  I cannot remember the last time a Yankees team offered that potential.
Derek
12:49
I think we at the blog have been pounding the table about how good this pitching staff is. Yes, Cole is a big driver of that, but they have soo many pitchers would are 2+ WAR guys, and that's big.
Bart
12:49
If they are really close but don't get there on Judge's contract by 4/8 do you think Judge will keep the window open a couple days or do you think 4/8 is a hard deadline
Derek
12:50
The Yankees can always keep talking to Judge's agent, and Judge wouldn't have to know about anything necessarily. If the Yankees make an offer that Judge's agent think is worth accepting on, say, April 15th, his agent wouldn't withhold it from Aaron.
Dan
12:51
What happens if/when Hicks goes down with a major injury in mid-April?  Locastro, Judge, Florial, or the field as the everyday CF?
Derek
12:51
Judge in center, with Locastro called up and on the bench, spelling in center as needed.
12:53
I've got an empty question queue, so I'm going to step away for a minute to take care of some baby related things. Please send in some more questions and I'll start answering again in a few.

Now that (almost) everybody's "favorite player" (Wade) is no longer on the Yankees, who is now the de facto "favorite?"
Derek
12:59
I have a feeling the catching situation will draw a lot of people's ire this season.
J
12:59
Do you have an eta on when the podcast will be coming back?
Derek
1:00
We're crafting a plan to bring the pod back soon. With me having a newborn, Randy really busy wrapping up the Jeter doc, and Bobby's work responsibilities really taking a lot of his time, things are rapidly changing a bit here. We still want to provide some content to you all every day, if possible, but we're trying to come up with a plan that works for everyone, including the podcast. Bobby wants to put up a blog housekeeping post soon.

Will we get a reaction post to the Castro/Joely trade?  If not, what's your reaction?
Derek
1:03
I wanted to write one a couple of days ago during my night shift watching the baby, but it didn't work out. Quick take: Joely was kinda redundant with Luetge and Peralta around, he lost some velo, and Castro is the archetype of a reliever the Yankees have loved in the last year. Good trade IMO.

I just moved to NYC in the fall and want to get out to some games this season. Where are the best value seats in the stadium?
Derek
1:05
I like getting the 400 section seats behind home plate, I think it's like 420A and 420B or something.
I also don't mind just getting the cheapest ticket available and then roaming around, finding an empty seat where I can.
Dan
1:05
Do the Yankees move to a 4-man bench before May 2nd (when they'll be required to carry no more than 13 pitchers)?  Or will they shuttle 11 relievers back and forth all of April?
Derek
1:06
Keep in mind that the that players can be shuttled up and down as much as teams like in April, so the 5 option rule in a single season won't apply. I think we will see the Yankees take full advantage of that, so no 4 man bunch in April at all.
KB
1:07
Maybe someone asked already, but does Man Banuelos stick somewhere in the Majors and 5th starter?
Derek
1:08
He was sent to Triple-A already. Maybe we see him at some point in April, but the 40 man situation is kinda tight right now, so I'm doubtful. I'd bet on him opting out and finding a new home at some point mid season as long as things go well in Scranton.
Bart
1:08
Do you think Brett Gardner signs anywhere else or could he be an injury option for the Yankees?
