Good point, probably not, especially because the likely moves would be defensive upgrades, too.

it appears from the broadcast that treinen will pitch the seventh for LA
Mike
10:33
I like how Buehler uses the insane spin on his 4 seamer to steal strikes at the bottom of the zone that people always think will be balls, so contrary to conventional wisdom about that pitch
Tony Wolfe
10:34
I don't know pitch physics as well as others on this site, but that's what's always struck me about buehler

I just don't know that I've seen anyone else who throws four-seamers at the knees like he does where batters seem to just give up on them

Somebody explain the mindset of the dodgers’ dislike of barrels?
AvatarJay Jaffe
10:35
I don't think it's dislike, just that it's not a necessity to win. Good things can happen even if you don't always barrel the ball.

I get their lineup is good, but shouldn't Bellinger be batting higher up anyway?
AvatarJay Jaffe
10:37
They like to alternate R-L when they can but yeah, it's reasonable to swap Bellinger for Muncy if things are back to going well, which I think they are for Bellinger. Though Muncy has been a constant on base machine.

The Dodgers barrels are overrated thing is just a joke.  In 2017, Chris Taylor went 4-4 in a game where he hit everything badly and was shaking his hands after every hit.  It turned into a joke.

i think the story goes that Taylor was standing on first and shaking his hands and fingers to dispel the lingering shock of poorly hit ball (not barreled).  And that's where the hand gesture came from.  It's like, hey i'm standing on first on a dinky hit; "barrels are overrated"; also ouch my hands hurt

Barrels are overrated is a somewhat ironic phrase they love saying after getting on base w/ a bs hit - and now Fox is acting like it's their genuine mindset lol

Lots of feedback from the crowd there!
Treinen is indeed in the game

Will the Dodgers use their high leverage guys? This seems low leverage for now
Dodger Fan
10:43
Treinen is one of our high-leverage guys.
AvatarJay Jaffe
10:43
Treinen is among the high-lev guys but maybe they don't have to use Kenley. With the 5-run lead and 3 straight games, they might be conservative.
Magic Johnson
10:43
If the score remains the same, this a good spot to get Jansen an “easy” save?
AvatarJay Jaffe
10:43
No save with a 5-run lead
Mike
10:44
Given how much Jansen has dropped off in back to backs in Sept I think Jansen is being saved for a high leverage spot because he's probably only going to be very good in 1 of 3 games here

LOL we just watched the Princess Bride here the other day and i couldn't quite make the connection.

Seager is their best hitter now so fine. But I'd be tempted to go Betts Bellinger at the top over a full season. Hey opposing starter, meet our two league MVPs.
AvatarJay Jaffe
10:52
It's funny because Bellinger hit 4th last year, with Muncy 2nd and Seager 5th. I think they've just moved the hotter guy up.
To be named later
10:52
I wouldn’t be surprised if later in the series Smoltz said he knew the barrels thing was a joke. But he didn’t.

I'm look at bRef active WAR leaders. Some names surprise me. Good players but I didn't realize how good. Greinke is a surefire Hall of Famer? Kinsler as or more valuable than King Felix over his career? Does Evan Longoria have a chance to get in the hall? Just some observations
AvatarJay Jaffe
10:55
Greinke, Kershaw, Verlander, and Scherzer are all HOF-bound, I believe. Kinsler good but not quite HOF-level good. Felix, sigh. He was on the path to Cooperstown but fell apart. Longoria is quietly making a case for himself but there are still several worthy 3B ahead of where he'll likely end up.

Ji-man Choi deserves some kind of special badge on his jersey for this game or something
AvatarJay Jaffe
10:56
He is a very entertaining player.
Mike
10:57
Greinke as a HOFer seems obvious.  He's had amazing seasons, pitched forever and never been bad.  That's the recipe for a HOF career

Graterol just flippin up 102 like he’s skipping rocks on a pond

Still haven't seen a World Series game stay really close for all nine innings. Had really expected differently with these two pitching staffs, but it's been sort of a weird three games so far

Jay: which person who isn’t good enough for the HOF solely as a player, executive, manager or otherwise is a HOFer if you consider his combined contributions to the game as a whole?
AvatarJay Jaffe

off the top of my head I might go with Davey Johnson over Baker and Hodges, the two guys we were discussing. Might need to think if somebody cuts that line... I still feel the top 10 or so player omissions would be ahead of anybody who fits this bill though
