Turner always looks like he needs a transfusion.

Lowe hit two home runs two games ago!

Re Mike: Felt that way the whole series. Seems partially due to low crowd noise and neutral setting

And then he went right back to being lost!

Is there any stat that standardizes pitcher velocity by era? I'm thinking of a wRC+-like metric where the average fastball velocity would be 100, anything harder goes higher... Do we have the velo data to be able to create something like that? Who would the outliers over the last 20 or so years be?

This is a great idea

My mind says World Series but the atmosphere says Spring Exhibition

How would you deploy the Dodgers' bullpen tonight?
Brendan Gawlowski

I recently flipped the '97 ASG on and Maddux is out there throwing 85-87

Carefully :-D
Mike

He went around, says Joe Buck when the pitch is just a strike
9:45
People are just deeply invested in the myths about Nolan Ryan and Bob Gibson throwing 100 to convince themselves that velocity is flat over time

I love that Velo+ idea!

Is annoncing really just so hard that Joe Buck is the best we can do, or is nepotism really just that powerful?
AvatarDan Szymborski

It really is hard
Joe Buck's not horrible, he's just vanilla

He's grown on me in recent years

Joe Buck is good!

Smoltz? uhhhh

Got a new appreciation for Buck from Brockmire

I feel like the average fastball was slower decades ago, but there was also more variance? Like, you had guys like Ryan (or further back, Feller), but also a bunch of soft tossing junkballers.

Having a famous dad will open some doors but you have to do the job year after year.
Brendan Gawlowski

If I could get velocities for five historic pitchers, I'd take W. Johnson, Feller, N. Ryan, Herb Score, and Steve Dalkowski

Joe Davis already better than Buck

west coast bias
Mike

My only problem with Buck is that he enthusiastically encourages Smoltz in his baseball grumping.  Joe Davis with Smoltz was so much better just because he didn't indulge Smoltz
Derek

Smoltz drags Buck down, as he would anyone
AvatarDan Szymborski

Smoltz would be fine if he stayed with the stuff he knows.

If the Dodgers win today, and Kershaw pitches tomorrow and has a similar performance to Game 1 in the clinching game of the WS do you think he finally shakes the choker narrative?
Brendan Gawlowski
9:49
More or less. As David Price did in 2018.

Fairbanks always looks like he's 4 seconds away from a panic attack

Yeah just have Smoltz break down pitching mechanics all game. That would be amazing
Brendan Gawlowski

It probably becomes like Peyton Manning, where postseason performance isn't a big part of his story
AvatarDan Szymborski
9:50
Exactly! Smoltz is wonderful when he talks that stuff. He should be a third guy whose job it is to break that down.

I’d get past velocities for Dan at ages 8, 10, 14, 16, and 18
