I think folks in favor of expanded playoffs often work for networks that would make a lot of $ broadcasting them and for teams that don't want to push their spending.

I just think there needs to be an incentive (beyond seeding) to win your division. Or else the second half of the regular season becomes really boring for the best teams

I have it on fairly good authority that the MLBPA at least -- and certainly a lot of player-agents -- are quite aware that more playoff teams will likely be a further drag on salaries.

You can make a larger playoffs, but you have to incentivize teams investing money in top players.
Which means you need to have a big benefit to winning 100 or 105 games or whatever.
