so the pass mark at uni is 40%?? isnt that a bit low

Hi@anon 2, for psychology, there are a huge number of students taking the module assignment, so there are several tutors to look after everyone. This is the same for a couple of other subjects, but for others, there is just one tutor. I think once you get in touch with them initially, it should be the same tutor who replies and supports you if they can, for consistency.

@OS it might seem a bit low, but 40% is what we'd call a bare pass at uni - it means you've got the lowest mark possible that allows you to count the module as part of your degree. Ideally you want to be aiming higher than that - 50% for example would get you a 2:2 classification, 60% would get you a 2:1 and 70% would get you a first class grade. A 2:1 is generally considered to be a very good grade at university.

thank you, I was worried that my A2L offer would not be valid for another course.
AvatarPaula
4:28
@anon 2, no problems, they generally are, as long as the grades are not higher, then it could be a problem,
OS
4:28
oh ok I guess that makes sense - so if you got 70% then that would be a first at the end of uni?
anon 2
4:28
that makes sense, a lot of students do the A2L course for psychology so they want to ensure that all pupils get a fast reply regardless of who the tutor is.
AvatarPaula
4:30
@anon 2, yes, hopefully you should get a response quite quickly from one of the tutors
anon 2

for my current a2l offer its ABB but for PPST it would be BBB I think.
AvatarMolly
4:30
@OS if you get an average of 70% across all of your assignments then yes you'd come out with a first - this is usually just your work from 2nd year onwards, as 1st year grades don't usually go towards your final grade.
OS
4:30
ok thank you
AvatarMolly
4:30
@OS no worries!
anon 2
4:32
like I know that I have an A in one subject but it isn't the one that is needed for an A as its not a science subject.
AvatarPaula
4:34
@anon 2, with those grades, that would be fine to change course, but as long as there are vacancies on the course on results day. For psychology, you would normally need to achieve the A in the subject that has been asked for in your offer conditions, as it is a competitive course. If you are considering changing courses before results day, or to discuss this further around grade requirements, you can contact accesstoleeds@leeds.ac.uk directly.

is there any way that the A2L offer will accept a different grade - like if your offer is ABB but you get AAC is that ok or would they reject you straight away
AvatarPaula
4:36
Hi @Guest. This can depend on the course applied to and which grades are achieved in which subjects. What course have you applied to?

Hi, I'm taking a gap year, and will be applying next year, how do I get in contact with RfE and will I do my assignment next year as well then?
AvatarMolly
4:40
Hi @Guest, are you completing the module this summer? If you pass the assignment this year then you won't need to do it again, but if you're not taking it this time round you'll need to do it next summer.
For getting in touch with RfE, you can just email us like normal!
JH
4:41
are the tutors nice for the module?
Guest
4:42
Can I complete the module this year, even though I have not applied for any universities/courses this time round since I want to apply next year
AvatarMolly
4:43
@Guest if you've not already applied to Leeds and Access to Leeds then you're unfortunately too late for this time round - you'll need to complete the A2L module next year after you send off your application.
Guest
4:44
Will I have to do RfE again? Or just start doing the A2L module?
AvatarPaula
4:45
Hey@JH The A2L tutors are a very varied bunch of people and range from very experienced academics, to younger researchers. They'll all have their different personalities and style of communicating. Whoever you are allocated to, they are there to help you and are committed to supporting you with your A2L assignment! Don't worry about contacting and corresponding with your tutor- they are all very approachable. There's some tips on tutor comms on Minerva!

Hi, if I complete my A2L under psychology however I don't gain the grades necessary to do the course, can the A2L be applied to my insurance course?
AvatarMolly
4:47
@Guest no you won't need to do RfE again! When you apply to UCAS just send us an email and say that you want to transfer onto A2L, and we'll be able to arrange that for you. You'll then just do the A2L module with everyone else!
AvatarPaula
4:48
Hey@guest. So I guess you have made another University of Leeds course for your insurance choice, with lower grades? And you have got an A2L offer for your insurance choice?
Guest
4:50
And will I be able to apply for one of the scholarships? Also when we started RfE last year, they said we need to complete a certain number of events, I did go to quite a few last year but not any this year but I have been on the webchats will it still count?
Guest
4:51
@Paula Yes I did
AvatarMolly
4:52
@Guest if you're applying next year then yes you'll be able to apply for the scholarships then too - if you drop us an email into the inbox now to say that you're taking a gap year then I can have you added to the Y13 communications next year too if you like? Then you'll get all the relevant info for the year you're applying, like scholarships, A2L etc etc
AvatarPaula
4:52
@Guest, yes then in this case, if you do not get the grades for your firm choice, then A2L will apply to your insurance choice, so you would have your place at Leeds for that course if you get the grades
Guest
4:56
can we email tutors as many times as we need to or will they stop replying?
AvatarPaula
4:58
Hi@ Guest, I think within reason, you should be able to email as much as you need! But please be aware that tutors will be busy with other things as well as A2L, so if you can try and put all your questions together in one email rather than lots of emails, that would be better. If your tutor does not reply after a few days, please contact the access to leeds team
Guest
4:58
Will I be able to come to the personal statement workshops since I did not come this time round, or is that only open for the next RfE students?
AvatarMolly
5:00
Hey @Guest yes that's fine - if you just email us with your name and let us know that you're taking a year out then we can get you aqll the info on signing up!
And that ends our chat! Thanks so much for all your questions guys, well done on exams and see you for Grad next week!
