MLBTR Live Chat with Steve Adams -- 11/22/16

Steve Adams

Buenas tardes. Let's chat about baseball (or whatever I damn well feel like because I pick the questions and run this chat with a tyrannical iron fist muahaha)

Chances EE stays with the Jays?
Steve Adams
3:01
Not good -- I don't really think they ever were all that good. A 4/80 offer is nice, but that's what I'd have expected him to sign a few months before he got to the market. I'm more bullish than the consensus 4/92 prediction we rolled out at MLBTR and think he's going to get more like $110MM over five years.

3:01
cespedes to cardinals?
Steve Adams
3:02
Can't see that happening -- it's so rare for them to beat the market for that level of player, and while Cespedes in LF and Grichuk in CF is a better defensive alignment than Holliday in LF and Grichuk in CF, it doesn't necessarily fir their preferred defensive upgrade.

I don't think the Cardinals will be as married to that thinking as many seem to, for what it's worth, but it's still worth considering when you're talking about having them beat the market.
3:03
I still like Yo for the Dodgers or Giants, and the Nationals make sense as a sort of darkhorse. It depends on how much deferred money they'd need to include.

3:03
How good of a backup plan is Fowler for the Mets?
Steve Adams
3:03
I don't think he should be a backup plan, I think he should be a priority. But then again, I'd never have exercised Bruce's option. Or traded for him in the first place. So Sandy and I clearly aren't on the same page here, ha.

3:04
Gardner or Headley more likely to be traded?
Steve Adams
3:05
Gardner will have more of a market. He's better and more teams need outfield help than 3B help.
Halomania
3:05
What type of young 2B/SP could Carlos Perez or Jett Bandy fetch?
Steve Adams
3:05
I don't think either of them is going to get you a particularly quality option at second base or on the mound.
Motown
3:05
How's Jon Jay's defense?? Fill the RF vacancy for the Orioles??
Steve Adams
3:07
He'd be fine in right -- maybe not as much arm as you'd like, but the range would be good. I like Jay as a fit about a dozen different places though and think he's one of the more underrated values on the free agent market. If Baltimore added him, I'd be all for it. (Well, assuming they didn't lose their mind and go 3/39 on him or something).

Cargo extension? Really?
Steve Adams
3:08
Yeah I don't know what to make of that, but it's coming from the player himself, so hard not to believe it. Still... I don't understand why they'd pay what will probably be way too much money for his decline. I mean, if he wants to sign for Josh Reddick/Nick Markakis money, get it done Bridich. But I'm sure he's seeking more than that.

Any word on the Reds shopping Descalfani or Straily while they are at their peak value?
Steve Adams
3:09
I doubt Straily has much value. Most of his success was driven by BABIP and strand rate. I doubt anyone's expecting another sub-4.00 ERA out of him.
3:10
I'd be shopping DeSclafani hard if I were the Reds, as his success looks far more legitimate, and four years of his arm could fetch a haul. Doesn't seem to be any indication they're doing it, but I think they'd be silly not to listen to offers and see if someone's going to bowl them over. And for what it's worth, I think someone would offer a pretty notable overpay.

EE still a possibility for the astros?
Steve Adams
3:11
I don't see why not. I mean, they have Gattis and McCann now but they can always move Gattis or play EE at first and move some other pieces. Encarnacion's the type of bat most teams would feel comfortable making room for even if there's not an obvious fit.
Brett Cecil
3:11
Mwa hahaha! I got more money than anyone expected!
Steve Adams
3:12
Tip of the cap to his agents there. I thought I was aggressive with my own personal prediction of $24-25MM over three years, and he shattered that.
Los Dodgers
3:12
If the Dodgers can't resign Justin Turner, who plays third for them?
Steve Adams
3:12
Have to think they'd trade for someone then. Signing Valbuena or Plouffe would be a huge downgrade.
Ian
3:13
Oakland as a dark horse Sale candidate? That would give them one of if not the best young rotations is baseball, and put them in a position to contend even with their horrendous hitting. Also, gotta love the value for a low-budget team.
Steve Adams
3:14
Just because they can technically afford him from a financial standpoint doesn't mean it makes sense. Plus, I don't think they'd be able to get him without seriously damaging the current roster. If you're the White Sox and looking at a so-so farm system, how do you not start with Sean Manaea and then continue to add 3-4 pieces around him?
Justin
3:15
Who is this off-seasons out of the box bounce back? Last year an example might be jean segura or Sean Rodriguez
Steve Adams
3:16
I like Charlie Morton as a rebound candidate, though I don't know that I'd have liked him enough to guarantee him two years. As I said earlier, I think Jon Jay's a nice value. Throwing a couple million at Brett Anderson works, too. Talent is there if the body will hold up. (Which it won't, but hey, if you get 70-80 innings out of him that's probably more than worth $3-4MM)

Any change I break camp with the Cleveland Indians?
Steve Adams
3:17
150 plate appearances at Triple-A and he struck out in nearly 38% of them. Not happening.

Sale for DeLeon, Kike, Van Slyke. Maybe 1 more???
Steve Adams
3:17
Not even close. That's one elite prospect and a bunch of spare parts.

Which free agent going to San Diego
Steve Adams
3:18
I wouldn't expect anyone all that great to go there. Lots of lower-tier free agents make sense though. Clayton Richard, Brett Anderson, Derek Holland... some upside plays. Also don't mind them for Korean free agents like Kwang-hyun Kim and Jae-gyun Hwang.

Heyward next season.....270/15/70...with GG D...crazy?
Steve Adams
3:19
Not crazy, but I'm not banking on it after his brutal 2016.

Do I have to stay on the Indians 25 man all year or get offered back to the Cards?
