Last true team re-naming (Devil Rays to Rays doesn't count) that didn't have to do with a move was the Washington Bullets-->Wizards. I don't remember it well. Were there a lot of similar arguments opposed to the change as we see today with Indians/Redskins?

No that's not true, they changed it after the murder rate in DC went way up and people complained Bullets was insensitive.
