As I always say, if you want BA to be a bigger thing, baseball needs to incentivize in the rules and equipment putting the ball in play

equipment-wise what do you suggest?

Why didn't the Giants just fire Farhan as well.  He handpicked Kapler

No inside knowledge, but this could have been a one-or-the-other-had-to-go situation. On a related note, I'm beginning to believe that Chaim Bloom being let go in Boston wasn't so much an ownership desire as it was an Alex Cora desire. Cora is hugely influential within the org, and I think (again, no inside info) he wanted to trade future assets for a better shot at the postseason down the stretch.

I'd experiment in indy ball with making first base 86 feet from the plate

My favorite time of year is here. The time fangraphs does random extra long chats with multiple writers/editors popping in at surprising times.

if we're doing cheeky band names, I'd go with Tailor At A Moderate Speed

It's a good question re: Zaidi. It really does seem to me that the stars-and-scrubs-but-no-stars roster and the total lack of deadline help (AJ Pollock? Really? That's it?) was the reason this team faltered, and Kapler could only do so much. That saw about how if your front office doesn't get your team deadline help then they might lose the clubhouse seems applicable here. From what I gather, Zaidi may have had to axe Kapler and pledge to do things differently in order to save his own job.

Just like we all predicted, Rangers playing great defense and taking advantage of Rays defensive miscues.
AvatarJay Jaffe
4:25
The Rangers do great by my Z (for not-ZiPS)-score defense thing, 2nd in the majors, while the Rays are ninth among the 12 playoff teams. But some of what's weighing the Rays down is catcher framing, which isn't apparent when you're watching batted balls be converted into outs.

Texas's hitting program is very good. Meanwhile, as much of a postseason long shot the Rays are due to the myriad injuries, their ability to somehow/anyhow win games is remarkable.

David, is there any truth to the stereotypes of positions in your experience? Are catchers more attentive, are SS and CF generally aloof savants. I suspect this crosses all positions as with any reasonable sampling of population, but these are highly specialized individuals. I guess I am asking are there valid personality type distinctions between positions (obvious caveats are obvious, this is a question about your experience only).

Might be too late to ask, but any guesses which player hits the first homer of the playoffs?

Jay: I’ve liked Bill James’ view that more players could hit for a higher average if they wanted to. “If you’re a lefty, just knock one a little over the shortstop’s head. There’s so much space there!”

You know defense has been bad when the home team gets tagged with three in six innings
AvatarDavid Laurila
4:28
My answer to Brian's question is that I haven't really noticed that. I will say that relievers and backup catchers tend to be more media friendly than players at other positions.

As a Cubs fan I'm disappointed with the late collapse but happy that there were meaningful games in late September. Having said that can the Cubs contend in 2024?
