I am strongly in favor of this. In the meantime, I did record a song very early one morning whose main premise was that we can be Royals.

MLB.tv is working for me

Hey, y'all Brooklyn-ites...can we focus on the Orioles offensive explosion and Eflin pitching a gem?  :)
AvatarJay Jaffe

can it qualify as a gem if the lone hit is a 2-run homer by a 161-pound second baseman?

Ozzie with a big donger. Would be fun to see a real resurgence from him this year
Davy Andrews
5:08
Could not agree with this more. Really hoping he's excellent again.

How many runs can you give up and still have it be a "gem"
Davy Andrews
5:09
Can't be more than two, right?
Pete

Renfroe already cost royals a run in RF… inexcusable not to plug at least one of the corner OF holes
Davy Andrews
5:10
I agree, but I have to imagine they were thinking he'd bounce back once his entire body wasn't injured. Also, they checked in on Soto. How much more do you want?
Matt Martell
5:13
If only they did a Zoom call with him
Oddball Herrera

If you’re the White Sox that answer is 6

I feel like 9 innings and 15+ K is a gem regardless of runs scored.

There have been 52 such starts with 9 innings and 15 or more strikeouts during the Wild Card era. Only 4 times did a pitcher allow more than 2 runs: 3 by Randy Johnson in the late 90s, 1 by Chris Sale in 2018 https://stathead.com/tiny/fkAxm

Also in credit to Gore he is touching 99 with great stuff today

This is the Orioles starting rotation we're talking about...this definitely qualifies.

A.J. Burnett's no-hitter (with 9 BBs) challenges the concept and the operational definition of "a gem."
Chip

Can I do a bold prediction?
The Dodgers fail to make the playoffs.
Betts is basically on his deathbed and also old, Muncy is old, Freeman is old, Ohtani is surgically repaired, Glasnow and Saski are injury-prone. Come @ me.
Davy Andrews

I'm officially coming at you. The depth, Chip. The depth.
AvatarJay Jaffe

Our Playoff Odds did give them a 2.1% chance of missing the playoffs. It's not entirely implausible!
Matt Martell
5:14
Put your full name on here Chip and then make that claim!
Davy Andrews
5:15
That is his full name, Matt. This the chipmunk from the Rescue Rangers you're talking to. Show some respect.
Dale, by the way, huge Dodgers fan.

I think one of those Randy Johnson starts was the one where McGwire hit one off the back wall of the Kingdome

Chip

Not saying it's likely, but it wouldn't shock me. Dynasties decline.

Gotta love the Dave Niehaus call too!

This is what I tell everyone - in the late 90s the Yankees were “going to ruin baseball”, but then guys got old, bills came due.  LAD will eventually be paying $200 mil in deferred payments to guys either retired or way past their prime
Davy Andrews
5:20
You're not wrong, but it's worth noting that they're already setting aside that deferred money now. It's not like they're spending it at the time that they pay it.
Brian
5:20
Fair enough Jay.... I would add that any 15K start is very likely a gem... I should do more searching before typing...thanks for the correction.
AvatarJay Jaffe
5:21
Wouldn't call it a correction so much as an opportunity to indulge my curiosity. We all learned something and got to watch an absolute beast of a homer!
Davy Andrews
5:21
Keibert home run! Did not expect to see one of those for a while.

Does it make me old that when I see Atlanta-vs-Padres I think 'Oh those are the teams the Yankees beat in 1996 and 1998' and also when I see Yankees-vs-Brewers I think 'Oh that's an odd American League matchup to start the season'?

It makes you one of us.

In the "you can't predict baseball Suzyn" category Wilyer Abrey had 1 hit in ST so he starts off the season with 2 knocks including a home run.
Davy Andrews

He seems destined for regression, but I sincerely hope it doesn't happen. I will be rooting for him this year. Happy for a fast start.
