It's not a defense so much as a goal of the current playoff format.  Disparity in the division records is an issue across every sport.

Ostensibly the purpose of the postseason is to crown the best team. If you couldn’t even win your division your claim on that crown is tenuous at best and my sympathy for your “punishment “ is very limited.
