What do you make of Griffin Canning? Is he still someone that the Angels should rely on next season? Does he have any options left?
Darragh McDonald
5:48
They certainly shouldn't be relying on him. But there's little harm in keeping him around. He'll get a very modest raise in arbitration and still has one option year remaining.

Why do you see Barria as a non-tender candidate? Seems like he has been pretty solid,  Canning seems like a much more likely candidate due to frequent injuries
Darragh McDonald
5:50
Barria had a .227 batting average on balls in play this year, so he's probably not as good as his ERA indicates.
5:51
The only time advanced metrics (FIP, xFIP, xERA, SIERA) had him below 4.00 was in the shortened 2020 season.
5:52
The same goes for Canning, mind you. But since he's ostensibly a starter, he could lead to a greater payoff on a modest investment.

Don't you think that bigger spending on top free agents could actually increase the sale value of the team?
Darragh McDonald
5:53
If it works out and the team is good next year, it's possible. But that's what the Angels have been trying to do for about a decade now, without success.
5:54
It also depends on the buyers. If you're shopping for a house, do you want something that's just been reno'd and looks all spiffy? Or would you rather pay less for a fixer-upper?
In this analogy, does one free agent splash even successfully make the Angels look spiffy? I don't know that it does.

The angels aren’t as far off as their record indicates. Their problem last year was that they were starting legitimate sub replacement level players in their lineup. If they can get just average production from those spots, that’s a huge improvement.
Darragh McDonald
5:55
Yeah, I think there could be something here. You already have the ceiling, just get a nice floor.

Sign Mancini, Segura, and Nimmo/conforto.
Darragh McDonald
5:56
I can see it, with Conforto more likely than Nimmo.

Since they are only 30 teams, does it really matter what the payroll is since a team rarely comes up for sale?
Darragh McDonald
5:58
It depends on the owner, I think. When the Marlins were sold, they immediately went into rebuild mode and traded everyone. If you add a bunch of other contracts onto the books, maybe it makes things less appealing for that type of ownership group.
5:59
Or if you're an owner planning on big spending, do you want the spending decisions already made before you even take control of the team? Or do you want to make them yourself after? I would guess the latter.

How many trade proposal questions are you getting for Adell?
Darragh McDonald
5:59
Almost as many as for Ohtani.

Livan Soto looked pretty good to finish the year, could he be a significant contributor in the infield?
Darragh McDonald
6:00
He did look good but he's 22 years old, skipped Triple-A and only played 18 games in the majors.
That's a big risk that you should prefer to avoid.
6:01
The Astros gave their 2022 shortstop job to Jeremy Pena, who had no MLB experience prior to this year. But he was older (now 25) and the team was pretty solid everywhere else.
6:02
If you're team is mostly excellent and you take a risk on one guy, that's not so bad. But the Angels won't be in that position.
Taylor Swift
6:03
putting the angels rotation at the top of concerns is just wrong. The angels rotation is legitimately good. Ohtani - Sandoval is a great 1-2. Detmers and Suarez are solid.
Darragh McDonald
6:03
I think you're right.
Micah
6:03
Why should we even be discussing an Ohtani trade? Wouldn't that significantly hurt the value of the team?
Darragh McDonald
6:03
He's one year away from free agency anyway. Any potential owner is surely aware of this.
Memphis Raines
6:04
Can the Angels trade Jo Adell to themselves?
Darragh McDonald
6:04
Haha
Benny
6:04
Do you know who are the likely candidates to buy the team? Wouldn’t the team be more attractive to buy with Ohtani locked in to a contract?
Darragh McDonald
6:04
If he's willing to sign an extension, they should have done it by now.

Who is the Angels starting left fielder next season? I’ll go with Moniak over Adell. What say you?
Darragh McDonald
6:06
I think some kind of outside addition is in order. Mitch Haniger?

Everyone says we have no first baseman, does no one remember Jared Walsh was an all-star in 2021?
Darragh McDonald
6:09
Walsh is just a big unknown right now. The injury explains why he was bad in 2022, but does it also make him bad next year?
Alex
6:10
Who’s doing the outlooks? I’ve seen you, Anthony, Tim, Mark,  and Steve. Will Nick Deeds, Maury Ahram, Simon Hampton, or Jacob Smith do any?
Darragh McDonald
6:11
No, just the first batch you mentioned. That latter group, they've just joined recently and are still getting their feet wet.
