If there are no injuries (somehow) does the depth work against them? How can any of Rengifo, Urshela, Drury, and Fletcher get in a groove if they’re mostly just splitting time on the two middle infield spots?
Darragh McDonald
1:16
I wouldn't worry about it. A team never goes a whole year without injuries.
Even if Rendon is healthy, they probably don't run him out there for all 162 at this point. That opens some third base playing time.
1:17
Walsh and Drury could also take a corner outfield spot on occasion to give Renfroe or Ward a day off.

Maybe it’s Trout? He is a world class athlete and been a top player for a decade, but maybe he’s not a “winner”. Trade him and resign Ohtani

Baseball is unlike other spots in that one unique athlete can't just dominate a game.
You can't just give the ball to LeBron or Tom Brady or Messi or whatever.
You have to take turns.
A pitcher can dominate a game, but then they take four days off.
1:19
Trout is great but he alone can't get you to the postseason. That's one of the things I love about baseball. It's more about having no holes than it is about having a couple of stars.

5 vs 6 man rotation, how does that effect ohtani's performance
Darragh McDonald
1:20
At this point, I don't see any reason to assume Ohtani can't do anything.
If he says he wants to be the closer on days he's not starting, I'd say sure. I believe him.
1:21
Since his Tommy John, he got up to 130 1/3 innings in 2021 and then 166 last year with better results.
If you had a time machine and told me he hit 200 innings this year with an ERA around 2.00, I would be impressed but not shocked.

Who is your pick as a breakout player on this team?
Darragh McDonald
1:22
I would pick O'Hoppe.
Goose Gaskins

I like the cut of your gib, Darragh!

Right back atcha, Goose.

Your opinion on Hunter, was looking at stats, dude rakes, high K’s but definitely a run producer. But 5 team in 5 years? What is issue? Is he toxic teammate? Curious and thank you.
Darragh McDonald
1:23
I think it's just the profile.
1:24
When a guy hits home runs but doesn't do much else, his arb salary goes up at a higher rate than the internal valuations.
So, Renfroe, Teoscar, guys like this, they quickly start making eight-figure salaries, but teams don't actually value them super high because of mediocre defense, OBP or whatever.

I give the Angels a 49% chance to resign Ohtani, what % would you give them?
Darragh McDonald
1:25
Sorry to be a bummer but I would probably go lower than that. In the 5-10 range.
1:26
Ohtani could have stayed in Japan until he was 25 and got a nine-figure deal at that point, probably, but with some hesitation because he wasn't proven in MLB.
By coming over earlier, he's going to reach free agency as a proven two-way superstar in the bigs and get 500 million or something.
1:27
The Angels have given out mega deals before and could do so again, but they'll be competing with the Giants, Dodgers, and a bunch of others teams.
1:28
He also has close to no competition on the position player side next winter. With Devers and Machado having signed, the second best position player will probably be Matt Chapman or someone.
Chapman's great but Ohtani will be miles above everyone else. Especially if the Phils extend Nola.

Fansgraphs has the bullpen projected to be last of all MLB teams for 2023. To me, that seems a bit harsh since they do have some decent arms. What are your thoughts?
Darragh McDonald
1:30
That seems a bit harsh, yeah. They project both Estevez and Herget to have ERAs above 4.00.
Tepera, Moore and Loup as well.
Maybe a couple of them struggle but I would be surprised if they were all bad.

I think livan soto can be really good. Am i being too optimistic?
Darragh McDonald
1:31
He had a solid year in Double-A but the overall track record isn't great. I'd remain skeptical for now but it would be a nice surprise if he really turned a corner.

The little bit that I have read about recovering from TOS, do you really think that Walsh can return to All-Star status this year?
Darragh McDonald
1:32
The returns from TOS are mixed. Strasburg seems washed. (I really hope that's wrong.) Whereas Merrill Kelly is fine.
1:33
Walsh isn't a pitcher so maybe it doesn't matter as much. And for what it's worth, he seems okay now. I believe he hit a double yesterday.
