Hello, Will. Could you tell me how many PhD applications UPenn received for ESE department last year. Also, what was the acceptance rate? Thank you very much!
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
11:04
Hi Jainning, we received 300 applications and admitted approximately 15%.
Yeon
11:03
I registered three references and one of them have not yet sent in his recommendation letter. Will it negatively affect my admission?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
11:05
Hi Yeon, unless you were required to submit 3 references, or the one that hasn't submitted theirs yet is your only academic reference, then it should be fine.
Riya
11:03
I have applied for Msc in Data Science on 15th Nov and now the checklist is showing GRE Status as Needed. But I have already subitted GRE scores through ETS
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
11:06
Hi Riya, we are aware of an issue with our test matching system not matching GRE scores at this point. We are actively working on having it fixed and this shouldn't affect the review of your application at this point.
yu
11:04
and will it be possible for all MCIT applicants to get their results in Jan? since I noticed there are 152 applicants, which is a relatively smaller number compared to data science program
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
11:07
Yu, if your application was accepted for the early review deadline, then yes, all of those applications should receive a decision either Jan 15 or Feb 15.
Terry
11:04
Hello will, is there an interview included for Materials Science and Engineering phd program admission?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
11:08
Terry, there may be informal interviews, but the MSE PhD program does not have a formal interview process, so I can't say definitively.
Riya
11:05
Also it shows Application Status as material needed
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
11:08
Yes, that will show until we receive all official materials. What is important is if the status says "Ready for Review," or not.

Jianning Cui
11:16
Hello, Will. Based on your previous answers, it seems that even if the GRE status is still "Needed", yet the application status may go from "Materials Needed" to "Ready for review". Is my understanding correct? Thanks!
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
11:17
Jianning, that is correct. The "materials needed," status refers to needing official copies of materials. However, we review applications based on unofficial documents - unofficial transcripts and unofficial GRE/TOEFL/IELTS test scores. It is an inelegant solution, but one that we find works if there are issues with us receiving the official documents, and can cut down on costs/paperwork for all involved.

Thank you very much! Also, will there be a chance of on site meeting to directly talk with professors in ESE department during the application process? Thanks!
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist

Jianning, the ESE dept does not have a formal interview process for ESE PhD Applicants. You can send an email to esegrad@seas.upenn.edu to request a meeting.
