Hi Will. I have applied for PhD in ESE and been interviewed by a POI in late December. Do I still need to be interviewed by the committee? Thanks.
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist

Weijia, good day. I don't believe there is usually more than one interview. However, this is ultimately up to the programs - we don't have a formal interview structure for the ESE PhD program.

Will everyone who is admitted to the Bioengineering PhD program go through the interview process or do some people recieve acceptance without interview?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist

Chin, to my knowledge, they will interview most, if not all applicants they plan to accept.

Hello, I applied for the Bioengineering PhD program. if I have not been in contact with any faculty, do I still have an equal chance of being admitted? In other words, is the faculty recommendation portion of the review process integral for admittance?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:34
Guest, all applicants have a chance of being accepted until they receive a decision stating otherwise.

How many Bioengineering PhD applications were received both last and this year? How many were accepted last year? Is there anything we can do now to increase our chances of being selected?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:36
Ermyntrude, last year we received 466 applications and admitted 63. This year we admitted 513. At this point there is nothing that you can do but wait. Good luck.

Hii Will, I wanted to know how MEAM PhD application flows within the department. Like from committee, listed potential advisors. Basically who plays what role in the procedure?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:36
Prasheel, both the faculty review committee and individual faculty review the applications. That's all I can really say.

Hi Will, I was wondering if the graduate students in the MEAM department are unionized, and if so, where I could find information about them. Thanks!
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:37
Hi Jonathan, our PhD graduate students do not have a union on campus at this time.

Hi Will, thanks for doing this! Quick question. I am interested in working with a second professor outside the department. How does Mat. Sc. handle collaborations with other departments and professors.
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:38
Hi Michael, these are handled on an individual basis, and you'd work with the program and your faculty about this question. You can also contact the Program Coordinator, Irene Clements, at ipc@lrsm.upenn.edu.

Hi Will,

I have applied to the CS PhD program. I wanted to know the percentage of PhD admissions offered to the MS students of UPenn because of their familiarity with Profs. of UPenn.
PS: I am wondering what are my chances as I don't know Profs through any other connection.

Thanks and Regards,
Suraj
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist

Suraj, I can't give you the % of internal master's students that were admitted. I'm sorry, but we don't release that information.

Hello Will. Thank you hosting this chat every week. You mentioned that PhD decisions are released on a rolling basis. But, I wanted to know if the CBE dept aims to send out all the decisions by a specific date like April 2020? Secondly, can we expect to receive a decision 4-6 weeks after we application was submitted or since the application status changed to "Under Review"?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:42
Yug, we do our best to have all of our PhD programs send out decisions by the April 15 national deadline, but we can't guarantee it. And you can't expect to receive it on any specific timeline, unfortunately. All we can do is tell you that you will receive a decision.

Hi Will, I applied to the PhD Bioengineering program. If I haven't gotten a notification about an interview yet, should I assume I did not get in?
AvatarWill Fenton, Enrollment Specialist
10:43
Olivia, all applicants will receive a decision, so if you haven't received a decision yet it means there's a chance you've been admitted.
