Hey crew ... welcome back, after my unintended week off. Love the volume of questions already; the hour should fly by as usual. Remember to help me out with context (type of league, keeper/redraft, etc) for the best answer. And ... if you're looking for some amazing in-person fantasy baseball talk, check out our links on the site to First Pitch Arizona, which takes place Nov 3-6 at the AFL. There's a great registration discount through this Wednesday. Hope to see a bunch of you there!
But ... let's get to today's questions ...

Hi Brent.  Someone in my 5X5 H2H OBP league beat me to Corbin Carroll today, and I was thinking about adding Gunnar Henderson instead. I love the walk rate, power, and speed, but his 27% strikeout rate at AAA makes me fear a Josh Lowe kind of debut. Would you expect Henderson to perform well out of the gate, or do you think he’ll struggle to make enough contact?  I’d probably have to drop Jon Berti, Andres Munoz, or Brandon Hughes to make room. Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:00
Yes to just about all. Henderson is a good CC fall-back, but Triple-A Ks are reason to temper expectations a bit. That said, making much better swing decisions and just hitting the ball harder in the games I've seen him in person. If your team needs the offensive boost, I wouldn't have problems dropping any of those three for Henderson just to see what we have. Fully expect him to be up this week or right after Labor Day at the latest.

Glad to see you back, Brent!

I may have to decide between two Rays pitchers down the stretch in my H2H league. Who do you like better -- Springs or Rasmussen?

Also, as a bonus 1B Dynasty question: Pasquantino or Casas?

You're awesome!

RR
Brent Hershey
12:03
I've been much more on board with Springs than Rasmussen this year but not  sure there's a big difference ROS. Maybe bigger chance of load management concerns w/ Springs? And Vinnie > Casas in dynasty pretty easily. That plate VP approach can hardly be overstated.

Brent,

What do you predict happens with Grissom when Albies returns? Do you think that the Braves will find a way to keep his bat in the lineup?

Thanks!!
Brent Hershey
12:05
I do; moving him around to fill in for the MIFs, playing the OF some (Grossman's expense, prob?). AB probably slightly less than his current pace, but as long as he keeps hitting, he'll have a spot.  Also Acuña insurance in a way...

Still grinding for respectability in my NL-only: Take a flier on Roansy over a struggling Logan Webb? Need the Ks and QS
Brent Hershey
12:07
Grind on! -- and that goes for us all!
Got some Roansy decisions of my own to make, but not sure I'd keep/start him over Webb, even with the struggles. And even through PIT pulled his workload back earlier, think QSs for him might be hard to come by. Love him long-term; just not sure he's one to count on hard for 2022.

Brent, what are your thoughts on saves for the Yankees over the rest of the season ? I have Holmes but should I be looking elsewhere ?
Brent Hershey
12:09
Over the next couple days, Holmes would be the one I'd want. I think he'll get the first shot. Beyond that, just depends what happens. Old Clay -- then there's your answer. Pre-IL Clay ... then it's a guess and a mess. Peralta? Looking elsewhere for you as a Holmes back-up is prob a good idea.

Brent thank you for your advice and wisdom. 4x4 keeper league AL only for next year. Bubba? Waters? Adell? Hernandez? Puk?Appeciate your input!
Brent Hershey
12:12
So many Hernandezes, lol. I'm going to guess Jonathan for my response, and I think that would be my pick here pretty easily. Bubba gets some consideration purely on SB scarcity, but the expected stats and K% say MLB pitching with catch up with him.

Brendan Lowe worth holding onto in a keeper league?
Brent Hershey
12:13
Broadly, yes. Still big power, think we'll chalk up this year to repeated injuries/never healthy. Have a hunch he'll be on some teams of my teams next year, expecting that his price will be cheap.

I am in a 10 team AL only 5x5 roto league. I can pick up grandal to replace Cal Raleigh in my lineup. Any views ROS between these two? In particular which would be better (or hurt the least) in batting average? Thanks!
Brent Hershey
12:18
Even with the BA black hole, I trust Raleigh WAY more than Grandal to stay healthy for the final 5+ weeks. The fact that he's pulling a Zunino-lite and hitting bombs is worth something, especially from that CA position. I guess if the BA need is so big you could still go Grandal -- it's just the health risk is huge.

Hi Brent, we missed you last week.  Two NL Only 5x5. questions.1. who should i pick up Pujols, Vierling or Hiura (please rate). all categories important but HR the most. 2. for next year Hughes or Evan Philips?  thanks
Brent Hershey
12:21
Thanks for all the kind words, both via last week and the whole season. This is a fun hour for me, too!
1) Hiura / Pujols / Vierling (MV going to lose time if Marsh is back healthy; other two are more HR hitters though risky PT for both)
2) Hughes; as good as Phillips is, doubt that he closes many games for LA. I'd take my chances w/ Hughes on a lesser team

12:25
Yo, Brent … I need to know! Is my patience with Vidal Brujan ever going to pay off? He’s mashing in AAA again.
Brent Hershey
12:25
Great call; I hadn't checked in on my despite having him on an AL-only bench spot. But the fact that we haven't heard much about him from the Rays is making me wonder. Still largely speed only, and that ugly 15-for-25 in SB at AAA is not good. I think you still hold and hope for 2022, but if we don't hear from him in September, might be time to cut bait (I'll need some help in that area, as well, lol)

Do you have any hope for Jeremy Pena, Oneil Cruz or Christopher Morel ROS?
Brent Hershey
12:29
Pena - yes, good situation; they'll have to start playing him to ready for the postseason
Cruz - tools like this can just click at any time, and the results will be monstrous. But that K% is huge to overcome ROS
Morel - trust him to more than Cruz, less than Pena to contribute some ROS. Rough 2H, obviously, but has MLB experience and skillset that could congeal down the stretch in a no-pressure environment.

Thanks for doing these - super helpful! I am curious about Eguy Rosario- will he play enough to justify a roster spot?
B Falter - He may be the only worthwhile pitcher on our FA list!
TJ Friedl? -will he play and should we go get him?
Brent Hershey
12:32
Eguy - I'd lean no at this point ROS; just don't see SD turning to him while they're in the race
Falter - enough here and opportunity (#6 starter, essentially) on a good team that he might be worth a Sept flyer.
Friedl - leaning Yes he'll play; but don't think he's worth seeking out fantasy-wise.

Hi Brent, thanks for taking us to the finish line. I'm in AL-only Roto league looking for SB help. Any ideas on waiver wire guys who could/should help? Isbel? N.Lopez? Baddoo? M.Sierra not getting PT anymore? Thanks.
Brent Hershey
12:35
Good luck, and thanks for the options. I'd probably rank them Isbel / Baddoo / Lopez / Sierra. I'm careful w/ Lopez; make sure you're not expecting that repeat of a late-season SB burst. Tough getting on base. The shot to take is one of the first two, in hopes that they'll play their way into AB on cruddy teams and provide a Sept spark.

Currently first in a crazy-tight dog-fight, NL only league. I have both Alek Thomas and Jake McCarthy active, and the latter has been gold the last few weeks. Is Corbin Carroll likely to take time from Thomas, even though he has been labeled as the "future"? I hate flipping these coins -- our league does weekly activations.
Brent Hershey
12:38
Hear ya; McCarthy HAS been "gold" recently. My hunch is that given the seasonal trajectories, yes that Thomas would more likely than McCarthy see the PT hit in the short-term. Though have to figure they'll still want to get Thomas in. I'll bet that the Garrett/Luplow/Hummel group will get cut back the most, though. The OF/DH spot is filling up out there.

Mornin' Brent...Please tell me what you believe is going on with Geolito. Is he keeper worthy in a 12 T mixed?
Brent Hershey
12:41
Yeah, I think he's still keeper worthy for 2023 given his past success. Some of it is bad luck (BABIP; etc); but some is velocity/K% and SwK% related. Type of player who wouldn't surprise me if there was an undisclosed nagging injury/issue of some sort.

Hi Brent.  Head to head weekly points league.  I need to pick 4 starters out of these 5 (Alcantara is a given already):  Gonsolin, Singer, Framber Valdez, Mikolas and Gallen. All but Framber are double dippers, but he has been so good that I don't want to dismiss him out of hand for only having one start.  Thanks for doing these.
Brent Hershey
12:47
Yeah, tough one. Still think volume is king; our numbers like but don't LOVE Framer vs. TEX this week. All of those 2-SPs rate highly ... though IF you can't make yourself sit Framber, I'd probably go Singer. Not great surrounding team, more more start-to-start volatility there despite the huge step up this year.

12:50
What do I do with Josh Hader? He's killing my ERA and WHIP!  I plan to drop him, but is that too extreme?
Brent Hershey
12:50
The question for me is how likely that in 5+ weeks, he turns it around enough to get back to pitching in high leverage? I think time is NOT on his side, given how awful he's been. And even IF he somehow re-establishes managerial confidence, how many outings/weeks would that take, given where we are? Seems like even then, you'd get what,  1, maybe 2 weeks of Saves? I'd probably be dropping him in redrafts if I had to make that choice.

12:52
If you're hurting for offense (seems like most are these days) are there any wire targets you find yourself targeting the most?
Brent Hershey
12:52
All MLB-team dependent; watching how teams (esp bad ones) are doling out playing time. Then trying to find pockets of skill in hopes of an overlap. Happy to rank a few names you could give.

12:56
hi Brent-  thoughts on Robert Suarez this year and next.  potential as closer in San Diego?
Brent Hershey
12:56
Good high-leverage arm who gives up more walks that you like overall. In teeny (9IP) 2H sample, better control but not as many Ks. Will that work as a CL at 31 years old? SD seems to have lots of options, though Hader for next year would seem to still be the fave. Lukewarm that he'll develop into a high leverage piece.
