The Ozuna deal, technically a free agency re-sign rather than an extension, was a huge miss
12:22
Otherwise, I think they're happy with basically everybody they've signed. Probably expected Olson to be a little better in year one, but he should be fine moving forward
12:23
They're up there payroll-wise but this isn't a team that backed itself into a corner with a bunch of awful investments. They graduated great players and have been really successful at keeping them, and this core should have them in annual contention for the division for at least the next half-decade as a result

What kind of package would it take to trade Acuna?  Would Ozuna be part of it?  There are rumors . . .
Anthony Franco
12:23
They're not trading Acuna to salary dump Ozuna
12:24
Acuna's not getting traded at all, and definitely not for that reason

The Braves seem destined to go over the CBT line, even in the event that they don't resing Dansby. They say they want to have a top 5 payroll eventually, but I fear the improvements they get will be marginal in order to stay under the luxury tax. Should I be worried they suddenly stop spending?
Anthony Franco
12:26
Yeah it's just a tough one to project right? They're already on pace to beat the franchise record payroll by $20MM before considering Dansby, a left fielder, bullpen pickups, etc. Liberty Media has constantly talked about it going up, but they're not tipping their hand how far they can go
A lot has been made about the top five payroll comments, which are nice to hear, but they're already projected next season for the 4th-highest payroll
12:28
Maybe the Phillies, Padres and Blue Jays jump them with offseason acquisitions, but the Braves are already very close to being top five. So that doesn't tell us a lot about how much more they might want to spend, just that they're not going to cut things back either

Trade for Yankees Gleber Torres.  Yay or nay
Anthony Franco
12:28
Similar to Segura where he already played his way off shortstop
12:29
Could try to push him back but I'd actually have more faith in Grissom to handle it defensively than Gleyber
Will Neel
12:29
I would feel comfortable giving dansby 6 years 132 million. If he passes, Vaughn Grissom is a future .270-.285 20 Hr hitter
Anthony Franco
12:30
Think the $140MM that Story and Báez got is the floor for Dansby. He's the same age and probably better than both of those guys

Why does MLBTR always use Central Time?
Anthony Franco
12:30
Tim runs the site and he's based in Chicago
NickNash
12:30
Any talk of a Nick Ahmed trade or bringing back Andrelton Simmons?
Anthony Franco
12:31
Guess you could acquire either of those guys to play a glove-first role off the bench, but not as the primary shortstop
Probably a little redundant with Arcia

Any rumors related to Benintendi being of plausable for Atl? He hits for Avg and gas great defense. Im an Ark guy, so I may be a bit bias.
Anthony Franco
12:32
Nothing substantive on Benintendi so far but I think it's a viable fit, yeah

Aside from Willy Adames, what are the ss options if the Braves improve there going into the trade market?
Anthony Franco
12:33
Amed Rosario's the main one. Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Nicky Lopez, Taylor Walls is probably attainable
Rosario aside, it's mostly glove-only guys
12:34
No real reason to think Milwaukee's likely to move Adames by the way. Jeff Passan's already reported the Brewers are trying to add, and if they were especially concerned about payroll, they could've dropped Hunter Renfroe yesterday but didn't

In 2021, the Braves infield defense was average to poor in the beginning of the season. Then the FO was allowed to implement creative shifts/alignments that boosted the infield defense to one of the best in the league. With the limitations on the shift coming in 2023, do you see the infield defense reverting back to a liability (especially if Dansby is replaced with Grissom)?
Anthony Franco
12:36
This is an interesting one that I don't have a great answer to. I think the right side of the infield will be really good. The left side's a tougher call since it kind of depends how you feel about Riley
12:38
Public metrics are pretty split on him. DRS loves him, Statcast does not. I've thought he's generally been pretty good when I've seen him, although you all watch more Braves games than I do. I'd actually be curious to hear what the opinion on him is
Defensively. He's obviously an awesome hitter
NickNash
12:38
The Shift going away is going to hurt every teams defense not just the Braves
Anthony Franco
12:39
Sure but the question is whether the Braves would be affected more than most. Teams with particularly rangy defenders should be in better shape to handle it

How do you feel about the strider extension? I think it was way too early to lock him up
Anthony Franco
12:40
Strong deal for Strider. He shattered the precedents in that service range, his camp did really well
12:42
Definitely riskier for the Braves than the Albies, Acuna, Harris deals were. Still think I'd have done it if I were the team though. He was so good this year, and you have your best chance at locking in an ace for the long haul if you get him signed early
Tom
12:43
Any chance Justyn-Henry Malloy factors into the left field picture next year?
Anthony Franco
12:43
Don't think he breaks camp or anything, but if he hits well over six weeks in Gwinnett to start out, he should be up
Jorge
12:44
Haven’t seen Braves connected to Tim Anderson but does he makes sense as a Dansby replacement in a trade?
Anthony Franco
12:44
Sure, just kind of a longer shot trade candidate in general since the White Sox are going for it

Re Riley’s defense - his hands are solid, arm is very good, range sub par. Turned himself into a good defender overall, which considering many projected him as a 1B/DH type in the minors, is an excellent outcome
