Ingle is in a tough spot to catch. The Guardos just traded for Bailey, he's not great back there, and it's hard to imagine Cleveland dealing him imminently.
Huff doesn't have the same offensive upside, so his odds of getting there in some kind of reserve role seem higher

Could Seth Hernandez earn a late season call up if the Pirates are in it and need bullpen help?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:12
I would be surprised.

TGA hasn't been at his finest the last month or so.  Any read on what's going on there?

Can turn into a thrower at times
Still on him, not ready to bump to the 100 yet though

Knowing how much easier it is to improve pitchers with today’s technology, and knowing how injury prone pitchers are, is velo less important to high school kids? Follow up, what traits are becoming more important to see in the youths these days?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:14
Maybe a little bit, kind of depends on where they are physically.
3:15
Arm strength still matters a lot. So does your ability to spin the ball, your frame and athleticism, your aptitude/makeup.
What matters less to me than ever is how your pitches actually look as a teenager.
3:16
They're going to look different as an adult, it's totally fine if they're inconsistent/not optimized in high school

Just to follow up on the Diamondbacks pitching development question. Do you see any signs of improvement from David Hagaman?
Brendan Gawlowski

Tracking along from the winter report, saw him recently, no real update to note.
3:18
Velo dropped off fairly early, that was maybe the biggest concern of the night

Hi Brendan, what are the chances we see any of these prospects get called up in the 2nd half? Made, M. Clark, De Vries, De Paula, F. Arias, K. Anderson.
Brendan Gawlowski
3:18
Clark almost certainly. Anderson and Arias likely. The others would surprise me more but it's not insane.

For guys who are young for their year - how do you tell the difference between "way better than their peers" and "just took a leap early"? Thinking about all those 5-star football prospects who dominated in HS because they maxed out to D-I linebacker when they were 15.
Brendan Gawlowski

Trying to assess if a someone is an early mature guy is a big part of the eval
If a guy is dominating and has clear physical projection left, you've really got something

What do you make of Blaine Bullard's debut so far?  Sounded like a hit tool guy coming in with minimal power, showed some pop out of the gate, but with more swing and miss.  Now seems to be trying to find the happy medium for both.  Is that an accurate interpretation?  Think this is a guy who can find a way to impact the ball without completely compromising the hit tool?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:20
High school switch hitter who skipped the complex, so there's a lot of factors that make a cautious, patient approach prudent here.
3:21
That said, the power is still pretty light and he's a sub-70% contact guy
3:22
See some positive, some negative in his approach.
He's probably going to hover right where he is on the Jays update, this summer and next year

As a Diamondbacks fan, I'm just frustrated by this whole year. It took Hazen 9 years to figure out that the pitching dev sucks, which all fans already knew. Highly paid pitchers aren't working out. The hitting dev magic of the first several years of Hazen's tenure seems to have dissipated with poor results from 2021-2023 drafts. The international signees have delivered subpar results over the past decade. And now the team will probably be sellers for the second straight year. Please give me something to look forward to!

I don't disagree with a whole lot of that. You're in a sneaky tough spot. It's probably not quite as daunting as Baltimore in the AL East but similar terrain. Fascinating "should we blow it up?" case.
3:26
something to look forward to: You get to see Corbin Carroll's prime. What a fun player, and what a great park for what he does. Enjoy that.

When a very high draft pick busts (I'm talking the Mark Appel, Brady Aiken, and Elijah Greens of the world), do you consider it more of a scouting miss, development miss, or merely the chaos inherent to the game we love simply exerting its will on a team and player?

How close is Nelson Rada?  He is at AAA and not drowning.  He seems to be a similar profile to Chandler Simpson with less speed and a touch more pop.   How do you think he will handle major league pitching? Who are good career comps?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:28
Better defender than Simpson, too. Quality fourth OF/second division guy who plays a long time and accumulates 9.8 WAR

Do you think Waldschmidt was promoted too soon? Doesn’t look like he will have an impact this year. Will he in ‘27?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:29
No, I don't, he just didn't hit. We'll see how it looks in round two.

Does the clock for minor league pitchers hitting the big leagues for the angels change with the new front office regime? And what do you think about Trey Gregory Alford?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:31
They have been promoting at a much more gradual pace this year. I'd expect that to continue.

Is Boston Smith a legitimate prospect for the White Sox? He was a bit old for A+ but in a very SSS, he is not overwhelmed by AA.
Brendan Gawlowski
3:34
He's a prospect, swing and miss is really scary

When Bryce Eldridge debuted, there was (and still is) concern about his K rate. I've tried watching every AB of his this season, and he seems to make great decisions taking pitches that are maybe ~6 inches or less below the strike zone, but when pitchers throw him offspeed stuff lower than that (like Gausman last night) it feels like he swings and missed almost every time. Is this something that you think he can iron out as he develops or will it always be a part of his game?

This could get better
