How long would it even take to know whether an org’s pitcher development or player development has improved?  Like, for the Angels, what would signs of success be that Mozeliak and whoever follows him have started to turn things around?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:35
There are a lot of things to look for. One I'll be watching very closely next week is what kind of pitchers they draft. Are they still prioritizing high velo, bad shape arms?

Thanks for chatting, BG. Dominican Summer League OPS is up over 50 points -- and nearly 100 points(!) from two years ago. Are "juiceballs" being used everywhere now? Also, are the Fangraphs wRC+ numbers for minor leaguers actually ballpark-adjusted, like with MLB? I know they didn't used to be. Thanks again!
Brendan Gawlowski
3:37
Not in Triple-A.
As for wRC+ not park adjusted, I erred in a chat earlier this year.

Lara showed a bit more, and perhaps, unexpected power this year in minors.  Does this change his projections? What do you expect with this current call up?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:37
We talked about him yesterday, we're going to hang on to our offseason report

Without giving too much away, do you have a favorite re-eval for the T100 update?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:38
A few of our picks to click are, indeed, clicking
Particularly guys with surnames that rhyme with Balvarez

i know t100 is WIP but do you feel these 3 pitchers all rise about the same amount? dzierwa (balt), jking (jays), mckennzie (braves)? is there much difference in upside in that group like maybe one one has SP2 type upside? appreciate your work, thank you.
Brendan Gawlowski
3:39
Dzierwa was just eval'd, I agree with Eric's assessment of him.
3:40
King I want to see more strikes, he's having a solid year but holding pattern on his eval
McKenzie, I'm encouraged. Hasn't thrown a ton but I've liked what he's put on tape. Looks a little bigger, throwing a little harder. Needed it.

I'm curious if there are any guys or type of guys that you like but have very little chance of making the majors. I'm thinking the good college qb that has no chance to be an nfl starter type guy
Brendan Gawlowski
3:41
Strike throwers with 20 or 30 velo

is there any contemporaneous data that can evidence a player's chances at being a 70+ in 3 years, or does it just happen
Brendan Gawlowski
3:41
The guys toward the top of the list, generally, have the best chance of doing that
Some of the 40+ Dominican signees as well

I was looking through old photos on my phone and saw I went to a NH Fishercats vs Bham Rumble Ponies game where Tebow (and Alonso) were playing vs Vlad, Bo, Cavan, Gurriel, and Breslow(!). My question is, did you write up a prospect report for Tebow back in the day, or did someone need to? As a follow-up, were there any old scouting reports in the system that you dug up or found interesting for one reason or another? For example, trying to find the original Mike Trout draft scouting report in the PIT system.
Brendan Gawlowski
3:43
I did not write up Tebow, though I did see him once in the AFL. Org with power.
3:44
As for old reports, I loved reading those when I was with PIT. My favorite was one on Jimmy Glowenke and I'm going to leave it right there.

"Strike throwers with 20 or 30 velo" I hope Tom Eshelman is doing well, wherever he's at

Shout out to Jorge Marcheco

Did you find any common threads on what helped Braves hitters take a step forward this year?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:46
No, which is actually an encouraging answer
Nils
3:46
Owen Carey (in Atl system) still a 40+?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:46
Yep
Phillip Denny
3:46
I know you shouldn't draft for need specifically, but at what point does a team like Baltimore look around and say "boy do we need some pitchers" or a team like KC look at their OF and say "this hasn't been a strong positional ground since 2016"?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:47
It's rare. The Mariners scouting director answered a version of this on a recent telecast. Occasionally it can break a tie.

3:48
How much do you view a scout’s role as accurately predicting how successful a player will be, as opposed to highlighting areas of strength and weakness at a point in time?
Brendan Gawlowski
3:49
It's a good question. The younger and further away they are, the more the value in highlighting attributes and paths forward
For 18 year olds on the complex, the right answer is going to be "org" the vast majority of the time
We all know that
The value is finding the guys with a chance to not be orgs

Any thoughts on how keys has looked since his call up? Really rocketed through the system this year including not missing a beat at aaa but obviously not the strongest start in the bigs
Brendan Gawlowski
3:51
Only seven games. The big leagues are hard. He smacks the shit out of it when he makes contact.
3:52
I don't think I'd change the tool grades much at this point. The topline FV would tick up to account for proximity and production at the upper levels

Which C do you prefer long term, Franklin Primera or Juan Flores?
Brendan Gawlowski

Flores
