Brewers Outlook '23

When will the brewers finally fully commit to improving the offense? They have mastered pitching and I know their is payroll constraints but feels like the same issue every year, put some bandaids on it and hope for the best the following season.

The over-arching problem facing the Brewers over the last few years is, unfortunately, Yelich being a mostly average hitter.  Their long-term gameplan was for Yelich to be still hitting like a superstar and carrying the lineup, but that just hasn't happened.

As a result, the team has had to somewhat play catchup on the offensive side, and focus on pitching/defense as their calling card.  The good news is that Contreras looks like he's for real, and some of the youngsters coming up have some real hitting potential, and Adames might bounce back with a more normal spring

Brewers tend to not do early extension with hitters, maybe because they haven’t had any worthy in recent years but Contreras feels like the perfect guy to change that trend. Do you think that’s something they look into?
Mark P
9:07
I'd be surprised if they haven't at least touched base with Contreras' agency yet.

Thoughts on Brewers looking to trade Devin Williams at his value peak?  Crew always finds good RP.  What would a return look like for 2 years of an elite closer?
Mark P
9:09
At the risk of bringing up the Josh Hader trade in a Brewers chat, that's a pretty good comp for what Williams might bring back.

With that trade still lingering in recent memory, I suspect Williams will be kept through 2024 and then possibly moved next winter.  If the Brewers are out of the race at midseason then Williams probably gets moved, but I think Milwaukee should still be contending.

Any reason not to run this back?  Sure, losing Burnes, Woodruff and Adames for compensation picks hurts, but with the farm looking solid, there may not be a better chance to take a swing at a deep run and open up that checkbook...
Mark P
9:11
I think that mindset might've been why those guys weren't already traded.  The last "let's make a run at it" year might well have been 2023.

Quero seems to be not mentioned a ton... with the emergence of Contreras, does Quero become trade bait?  Or do we expect one of the most vaunted catching duos in a year or so?
Mark P
9:14
It's usually not Milwaukee's style to deal a very good prospect, but this could be a unique circumstance with Contreras looking like the real deal.  There's no rush for Quero to be dealt immediately since he hasn't even hit Triple-A yet, but the Brewers might at least be open to offers, if dealing Quero could net them a more MLB-ready player with control at another position

With Santana a free agent, do they just run Tellez back out there hoping for a bounce back, make a call up or trade/sign someone else?
Mark P
9:14
Tellez seems like a pretty easy non-tender call
Michael Houser
9:14
Hey Mark! Any knowledge of what is going to happen with my brother Adrian? Anxious times over here! He loves Milwaukee. He’s quite nervous about his future.
Mark P
9:15
I don't think your brother has to worry much.  With the rotation in a state of flux, I have to believe Houser will be tendered a contract.

If Burnes is traded in the offseason, which team is the most likely trade candidate, and what might the return be?
Mark P
9:17
At least half the league could be good fits for Burnes, which makes it tricky to evaluate trades.  Like last year, I suspect there might be a run on the free agent pitchers first, since teams are more willing to spend than give up prospect.  Once the big FA names are mostly off the market, then you might see the Brewers get more action on Burnes from whomever is still in need of top pitching

Mountcastle for Burnes straight up. Yes, Corbin is more accomplished, but 3 arb yrs to one evens it out?
Amazin
9:17
Burnes to Baltimore for Coby Mayo? Solves 1B issue potentially for the long term if Baltimore decides to go all in.
Mark P
9:19
The O's make a lot of sense as a Burnes landing spot.  It wouldn't be a one-for-one, but Burnes for one of the MLB-ready prospects (Mayo is an interesting fit) and perhaps some other player is a possibility?  Not Mountcastle.
9:20
Someone like Ramon Urias might also be on Milwaukee's radar, to help out the infield situation and because Baltimore needs to create space for all their infield prospects.
Tons of cool and fun possibilities for a Brewers/Orioles blockbuster this winter, no doubt!

As a fellow Mark and Brew Crew fan, I'm concerned about the Pirates' improvement. Their offense seems to be taking a step forward next year not to mention Keller will be the best pitcher in the division with Burnes most likely leaving. Pair this with the Cubs and Reds (and Cardinals are always in the mix almost every year) I think we might finish LAST in the division. Please tell me this is an overreaction
Mark P
9:22
It's an overreaction.  This team has a lot of talent, and almost always overachieves.

Thoughts on a Burnes and Williams package to AZ.  That will definitely land you Pffadt plus others.
Mark P
9:24
It would, except the Diamondbacks are somewhat in the same position as the Brewers ---- they want to contend next year, but within the constraints of a modest payroll.  For an Arizona team that also relies on prospects, are they going to make such a big splash for one year of Burnes and two years of a closer?  (Even an excellent closer like Williams)

It’s not unlikely they move burnes OR woodruff, but there’s no way they’d move both right? I got both their jerseys I’m Feeling Quite nervous 🤞
Mark P
9:24
This probably won't make you feel "less" nervous, but Woodruff's shoulder problem might make him unlikely to be dealt.
Brew Crewser
9:26
Should the Brewers consider non tendering Brandon Woodruff?
Mark P
9:27
Even in the event of a shoulder surgery, a non-tender doesn't seem likely.  The Brewers should have some word on Woodruff's shoulder this week, so they'll have time to make a decision (possibly the "two-year deal" scenario floated earlier) well before the non-tender deadline
Even with a major injury, Milwaukee doesn't want to let Woodruff walk for nothing

At what point should the Brewers sell high on guys like Burnes, Woodruff etc? This feels like the decision before other decisions like Canha can be made. 1-9 in the last ten playoff games doesn’t inspire confidence with the current core, and having permanent stopgaps like Winker and Anderson flooding the roster every year is cause for concern. Seems the organization is far more concerned about making the playoffs than actually doing anything in them (see Yelich’s comments).
Mark P
9:30
Every team has "stopgaps" to some extent, even the big spenders.  The Brewers have done well enough in finding those lower-cost answers that it has helped them become a postseason regular, even if the October success hasn't yet come.

If you get into the playoffs, you have a chance.

Sign Hoskins to a one year deal and trade an outfielder Frelick(?) to Cleveland for one of their young starters?
Mark P
9:31
The Guardians and Brewers make a ton of sense as trade partners given their respective surpluses of young talent.
I dunno if Frelick is specifically on Cleveland's radar, but if the Brewers did deal from their "top three" young outfielders, he'd be the pick ---- Chourio isn't going anywhere, and Mitchell's stock is down after barely playing last year

Does Corbin Burnes go to the Bay next year? Sounds like a good move for both teams
Mark P
9:32
If by "the Bay" you mean San Francisco, I can see that.  If you mean the Athletics, uh, no.

Abraham Toro had a good year at AAA and also in a VERY small sample size in Milwaukee.  Can't the offensively challenged Brewers find him a spot, even with his subpar defense?
Mark P
9:36
I could see Toro as a trade chip depending on how the rest of the infield picture plays out.  Monasterio, Miller, and Black could all be in the mix for platoon/utility roles ahead of him

Have you heard why the Brewers took Burnes to arbitration for the $500k difference?
