Brian, I re watched the Oakland Raiders game. Why such the visceral response to Josh Dobbs. 3 dropped passes. An interception that was tipped. He picked up first downs with his legs. Give him a week of prep I think he will surprise as a viable back up to Ben. I think many folks are  hard on him based on the urgency  of that moment? Thoughts?

Possibly. I wasn't paying nearly as much attention to the Steelers as I was the Pitt Panthers this time last year, but there's a lot to like with Dobbs, generally. Don't think it's a huge gap between him and Mason Rudolph at this point, but I think there's a better chance that it's Rudolph who plays his way into backup status in the preseason given his physical tools.

Hello Brian, I believe it was better for The Steelers to draft Devin Bush this year, than drafting an ILB last year, I call it Faith. Do you agree?

Ehhh in a perfect world, you draft Darius Leonard last year and be happy to have the NFL DROY and an All-Pro guy on your squad.

Dupree was paid handsomely on his 5th year option, but doesn't he need to show more to get a long term deal from the team?

Let me think on that for a secYES

If the O goes 3 & out... a lot...  it might end up having a lot 'to do with' the D.

Your point is noted for the chat record.

Speaking of preseason... I actually get excited seeing the rookies, UFAs, and bubble players play, but agree that for most it's a waste of time (even for vets).  What's your take on it?
Brian Batko

Haven't covered it yet, but can't imagine it's great. I'll let you know sometime in August, I guess.

Did you read the Ziese article regarding a Tomlin extension? I'm curious what your take is on the subject.

Of course, I read everything my Steelers colleagues and our columnists write about the team. I certainly see Paul's point, but I'm also a big stability guy, so I don't think it'd be crazy to extend him now.

I think with free agency and the draft, we may have a better defense than many may anticipate.   Week 1 against NE should give us a good idea.  Do you agree?

There could hardly be a better, or more fitting, challenge for this particular franchise.

Well, OK, we'll end on that poetic note of the New England Patriots always looming large for the Steelers. This chat is over, but there will be another one next week at some point once OTAs begin.

I'll also begin a new feature on the site, a Steelers mailbag, where we can go a little more in-depth than the chat on questions and answers. You can send along questions to my email at bbatko@post-gazette.com or tweet/direct message me over there. Thanks, everyone.
