They see a guy who has the physical makeup to still be a stud, not a dud, and would rather his Steelers career not end with a thud. It's also tough to move on from a first-round pick if he's at all productive/promising enough. But as you can see with declining Artie Burns' 5th-year option, I think they're at that point with him.

Brian, Have you heard and indications of what the plans for TE are? Jaylan Samuels was used as a HB last year but was listed on the roster as a TE/HB. Any chance he goes to full time TE?
Brian Batko
2:30
No.

A Leopard does not change spots.........Do you think the lights are blinking for the Jets, now that Mr. Bell is exhibiting 'his work routine' for them?  Add the lack of 'stats' A.B. will log without Ben tossing him the ball.....and all of a sudden the Steelers must look pretty smart, huh?
Brian Batko
2:31
I will let you know in January.

Brian, Bell no show for mini-camp and Brown not playing in Exhibition games. NFL teams be careful what you wish for ........ thank God they're not our problem anymore. Are you surprised ?
Brian Batko
2:31
Nah
Mike
2:31
Would the Steelers be interested in bringing in the te from the Vikings if he became available forgot his name  Kyle r
Brian Batko
2:33
Imagine Mason Rudolph throwing touchdowns to Kyle Rudolph. That'd be wild, man. i think they'd also have to bring in wide receiver Travis Rudolph from the Dolphins.

What's the vibe around Steelers hq these days?  Maybe a bit more focused/chip on the shoulder than previously?
Brian Batko
2:33
I don't know, I'm new here

Way too early super bowl prediction?
Brian Batko
2:34
It'll be played Feb. 2, 2020

Think we'll see Jaylon Samuels line up as H-back in two-back set?
Brian Batko
2:36
Now that , I think, is a more intriguing Jaylen Samuels idea. He's too good a runner to totally phase out that part of his game, but I do see someone who's versatile enough to be used in some creative ways. If you have three capable backs in James Conner, Samuels and rookie Benny Snell, but maybe not enough at TE behind Vance McDonald, I'd try to get my best playmakers on the field.

Looking forward Davis is likely not the answer at safety. Any chance they try to go for Tre Boston? Young and proven, would add A lot to the D.
Brian Batko
2:37
I'm not a huge Sean Davis fan either, but I don't think they're ready to write him off just yet. Should be a good prove-it year for him in his second go-round at free safety. Is Tre Boston related to David Boston? That dude was jacked (and on steroids).

Why are people so down on Mike Hilton, I feel he competes every game he is in? He may not be an all pro but valuable team player.
Brian Batko
2:39
Not sure, Paul. I like what he brings. But if Justin Layne comes along quicker than expected as an outside corner, and Joe Haden continues to play well, maybe you can move Steven Nelson to the slot and have three really strong coverage guys. That's a big IF with Layne though.

How do you decide what questions to answer?
Brian Batko
2:39
As soon as someone sends in a question, I write it down on a scrap of paper and throw it into a hat. Then I pick out of said hat.

2:41
Do you think Haden gets an extension it are they hoping Layne can take over for him eventually?
Brian Batko
2:42
Of course they're hoping Layne can take over, they used a third-round pick on him. But given his relative inexperience at corner (he started out as a WR at Michigan State) that might take longer than some of the other corner prospects they were looking at in this draft. Still a lot to like, though, with Layne's size, athleticism, ball skills.

I'm not familiar with your work, have you been on the Steelers beat awhile for PG?
Brian Batko
2:42
Yeah it's been a while, about two weeks now.
pdxJaxon
2:43
so......obviously jumpin the gun a bit, but it looks like next year again, our top need in draft will be "Edge".
Brian Batko
2:44
It could be edge. It could be safety if Sean Davis' improvement is minimal. It could be OT if the Matt Feilers and BJ Finneys of the world aren't great there.

Is Barron simply not big enough to stop the run?
Brian Batko
2:45
I wouldn't say that. He graded out really well as a run-stuffer a couple years ago with the Rams.

If you could be NFL Commish for a day, aside from enjoying that sweet, sweet salary, what is one rule change would you try to implement?
Brian Batko
2:46
I would rule that NFL wideouts only need one foot down for a reception. They already make absurd catches now, but imagine the types of grabs you'd see from Julio, Odell, Tony Toe-Tap if they truly only had to tap one toe!
Pete Benedict

bud Dupree is a joke, Rush outside, gets ridden outside, over and over and over

2:46
welcome to the steelers beat. What did you think of the steelers draft ? how many if any will be impact players in your opinion?
Brian Batko
2:47
Thank you, guest. I thought it was fine. To me, they nailed their first-rounder and were pretty much playing with house money beyond that. Diontae Johnson was off the radar, but seems solid. Justin Layne was on the radar, but you wonder why he slipped. The other guys? I don't feel too strongly one way or the other.
Lloyd's 3-Count
2:48
How realistic is the kicking competition going into this year? McCrane doesn't look like he can make much beyond 40 and kickoffs are short.
Brian Batko
2:49
Well, that all depends on whether Chris Boswell can get his own confidence back. I think the Steelers should send him and Artie Burns on a vision quest.
One Time Walk-on
2:49
Do you think Steelers fans drove AB and LB out of town by the predisposed notion/attitude that professional Pittsburgh athletes “owe” the city?
Brian Batko
2:49
No, because I think a lot of their issues stemmed more from what they owed their own teammates, especially by the end of it.

Brian, in your opinion, how long before the #84 is worn by another Steelers player?
