I wouldn't trade Bichette for Bohm

I know the Cubs weren’t going to shop at the top tier for SP, but Matthew Boyd?  Why?
Steve Adams
1:20
Boyd was one of my favorite buys in the middle tier of starters and I thought his price tag was fine. But going to the Cubs specifically is so weird for them. This is another podcast topic on tomorrow's episode, so you can get my full thoughts there, but in a nutshell: I do not understand why the Cubs aren't aggressively trying to win an eminently winnable division. Hell, I don't understand why no one in the NL Central is taking that stance.
Three Way Trade
1:22
Have you seen the Cubs/Phillies/Mariners rumor? Thoughts?
Steve Adams
1:22
I've been asked about this so much. It's not a "proposed trade" -- it's a speculative idea from ESPN
ESPN's David Schoenfield. He characterizes it as such.
1:23
It's one idea based on the teams' needs and payroll subjects. I don't think the Mariners want to trade from the rotation. Them taking on Nico Hoerner coming off flexor surgery and a generally middle-of-the-road hitter like Bohm doesn't drastically improve the offense so much as it just raises the floor.
1:24
Also, the Mariners aren't trading Harry Ford to get Hoerner/Bohm.
1:25
It's a fun thought exercise, I guess, but the specifics of it don't work for me and the level of attention it's getting feels disproportionate considering it's literally just one person saying "Hey this could be fun in my opinion."
1:26
And to be clear, that's not a knock on David. I speculate on stuff all the time. Everyone who writes for a large public-facing outlet does. But sometimes these things take on a life of their own in a way that I find surprising. This is one of those.

Could you see Darrick Hall as part of a trade package the Phillies could use to land a pitcher?
Steve Adams
1:28
Admittedly, I accidentally clicked the "publish" button on this question, haha, but hey it's here now so let's take it!

The Phillies outrighted Darick Hall off the 40-man roster in August and he became a minor league free agent in October. He's no longer in the Phillies organization.

Tommy Pham to the Padres for 3 million plus incentives?
Steve Adams
1:29
Pham signed a minor league deal worth $3MM last year and didn't have a great year. I'd think the Padres could try a similar approach this year late in the offseason, but if they offered 3 guaranteed right now he'd probably take it.

Rangers sign Bregman then deal Jung for top pitching?
Steve Adams
1:30
Bregman doesn't really mesh with the Rangers' goal of staying under the luxury tax. Rotation help is their priority.

Do you think Bellinger seems like a good fit for the Yankees? The contract isn't *that* awful and he still produces. He could cover either 1B or OF, depending on if Soto signs there or not. Even if the Cubs take like $5mil AAV off to make his deal more palatable, it sounds like it wouldn't take that much of a prospect haul to get him.
Steve Adams
1:32
Yeah, Bellinger to the Bronx makes plenty of sense regardless of the Soto outcome. Obviously it's easier to take on the money if Soto departs, but it's a short-term deal they could stomach. Gives them some cover at 1B and in the outfield corners, both potential positions of need. I agree that the prospect cost is going to be minimal.

1:32
Rangers really need a masher against LHP. Who do you believe is best of this group? Grichuk, M.Andujar, Laureano or Hays?
Steve Adams
1:32
If you just want a pure lefty masher, Grichuk. If you want someone who can hit lefties and has the best chance to play his way into a regular role, Hays.
Cubbies
1:33
I don’t see the Brewers as a dominant force in a weak NL Central. Can’t the Cubs open their wallets & field a team that will at least make the playoffs?
Steve Adams
1:34
They should. They apparently do not want to. Frustrating for all you Cubs fans out there I'm sure -- but that appears to be reality. Shopping in the middle and hoping for enough in-house growth to get over the line. It's weird. The Cubs just don't seem motivated to act like the big-market team they are.

1:35
Any thoughts of adding random trap doors in the outfield that drop outfielders into a giant pit of water as the next rule after the Golden At Bat?
Steve Adams
1:36
I think I'd like that more than the Golden AB
TrevorF
1:36
Do you buy the reports that the Blue Jays make the highest offer for Soto?
Steve Adams
1:36
Sure. Doesn't strike me as unreasonable. They're owned by Rogers Communications and probably know that if they simply match the Yankees/Mets, they're not getting him.
Still an A
1:37
Does the D-Backs owner trashing Jordan Montgomery make some free agents think twice about signing to play with them?
Steve Adams
1:38
Money talks in the end, but yeah if you're a free agent and you're deciding between nearly equal offers from the D-backs and another team, I don't know how something like that wouldn't at least cross your mind. These guys are human, after all.

Why didn’t AA resign Travis? Is there a prospect getting some playing time in 2025?
Steve Adams
1:43
Probably Drake Baldwin. Also, the Braves' payroll is enormous. Atlanta fans seem to disregard the fact that they had $277MM of luxury obligations in 2024. The massive slate of contract extensions and the spendy bullpen signings like Jimenez, Johnson, the Bummer trade, etc. make for a perennially massive luxury ledger.

I haven't bought the Braves as a legitimate bidder for any top free agent this winter and don't think they're going to take on a notable contract in trade either. I'll own that if I'm wrong, but I expect a lot of low-cost moves

1:43
If I’m Friedman, I’d sign Teo before Soto signs driving up the price for outfielders. He wants to stay with the Dodgers, should be easy to reach a deal.
Steve Adams
1:45
Just depends on whether they actually want to re-sign a defensively limited corner outfielder at market value ($20-22MM per year probably) when they have their DH spot spoken for. Dodgers are saying all the right things about loving Hernandez, and he obviously wants to return -- but no deal yet.

Generally speaking, Hernandez seems like the kind of guy the Dodgers have preferred on a one-year deal.

How does Blake Snells signing bonus word for CBT?
Steve Adams
1:48
Offsets some of the depreciation that's factored in for the deferrals. Jon Heyman just reported the full breakdown of the deal and added that the MLBPA values it at just over $150MM. League's number will probably be different. But I expect the AAV to come with something like a $30-32MM hit rather than the face value $36.4MM.
Go Guardians!!!

If Cleveland trades Josh Naylor, could you see a scenario where they sign Carlos Santana to a one year deal to help bridge the gap?
