I think they could plausibly bring back a big league ready rotation arm who's making the league minimum in a Gray trade. Not one who's a #2 or #3 caliber starter from day one, of course, but a solid 4/5 type to plug right into the rotation feels attainable

If the Jays can unload Grichuk, do you see them going after someone like Conforto?
Anthony Franco
3:35
Even then, I don't think there's a ton of demand in the outfield. Gurriel-Springer-Teoscar's still a strong group. Could work Hernández in more heavily at DH to accommodate Conforto, but teams don't usually love devoting the DH spot to one player full-time
So I wouldn't entirely rule it out, but there are other clubs with clearer needs for Conforto who I expect to ultimately win that bidding

Who do you see matt olson playing for next year?
Anthony Franco
3:36
Brewers, Yankees, Phillies (assuming the CBA has an NL DH), Mariners all stand out as good fits to me
Maybe the Guardians as a real dark horse?

How many regular season games do you think get played in 2022? I'm worried the owners will shorten the regular season to save money on player salaries again
Anthony Franco

162
I think there'll be a lockout, but I remain optimistic it'll be confined to the offseason and hopefully resolved by early February

A few weeks ago, one of your writers said Yankees can trade Luke voit to twins. Did he forget twins have Miguel Sano, , and Alex Kirilloff? Also are you surprised twins owner is holding back possible Buxton trade due to reactions by Minnesota fans,  and media?

I'm not sure which post you're referring to (not saying it wasn't on the site, just that I don't recall that offhand), but I agree that Voit to Minnesota doesn't feel especially likely
3:39
Sanó would be tough to move, and general manager Thad Levine told Dan Hayes of the Athletic a few days ago that the club wasn't super keen on the idea of committing full-time DH at-bats to any one player
On Buxton, not really surprised that ownership's apprehensive about a trade. I'm sure there are members of the front office equally concerned with the prospect of trading him away, only to see him stay healthy and run off an MVP-caliber 2022
3:40
If they were clearly rebuilding, it'd be easier to make that move. But I think Minnesota (justifiably enough) feels they're not that far from being competitive next year. Trading Buxton makes that vision so much harder

Groshans and Kirk for S Gray and Suarez?
Anthony Franco
3:41
Can't see Toronto doing this. Suárez is a real roadblock in a trade, not an asset

I’m not happy this morning . I’ve never seen such unprofessional behavior exhibited by Anthony Franco.I guess words and promises don’t matter.

Lol
3:42
What a weird situation all around
3:43
For those who haven't seen, this is in reference to Mets' owner Steve Cohen taking a swipe at Matz and his representatives for what he says is their decision not to allow the Mets a chance to match the Cardinals' offer
3:44
The strangest part to me is that I don't see the Matz deal as some huge bargain for St. Louis. At 4/44, he topped both what I would've been willing to offer and what I expected he'd get on the open market. I think it's odd the Mets would've wanted to top that price anyhow

Are We signing our new shorstop long term?
Anthony Franco
3:44
I think they should, but reports from both the Daily News and the Post in recent days have kind of cast doubt on that possibility
3:45
I certainly wouldn't rule the Yankees out on one of the top five shortstops, but I'm less convinced it'll happen now than I was two weeks ago

Which Marlin pitcher do you think will be traded for an interesting batter?
Anthony Franco
3:46
Pablo López, with a controllable catcher or outfielder feeling the most likely return

Is a long-term commitment to Robbie Ray wise considering just one great season? How many years does he get?
Anthony Franco
3:46
We've got him at 5/130. Wouldn't shock me if he ended up at six years, particularly with how strong the free agent pitching market was
3:47
That kind of investment in any pitcher is a risk, and Ray couldn't throw a strike in 2020. But I think you're short-changing him with the "one great season" thing
3:48
He's been one of the highest-strikeout arms in the game from basically the day he came up. He was an All-Star and down ballot Cy Young finisher in 2017. Ray has been electric before, even if not quite at his 2021 levels

Any news on the Padres front? Pitcher? OF? Trade? Relief pitcher?
Anthony Franco
3:49
It's been oddly quiet with San Diego so far, but I can't imagine president A.J. Preller is going to sit idly by all winter
I'm sure they're going to make a new effort at moving Hosmer and/or Myers, which I don't expect to be successful
3:50
An Adam Frazier trade before next week's non-tender deadline feels possible, and that would open a little breathing room for an outfield addition
I like them as a fit for Conforto, maybe Castellanos if they're willing to add another long-term deal to the books

Think there will be any moves by the Royals this off-season?
Anthony Franco
3:50
Sure, they've all but said they're going to try to make multiple impact additions in the bullpen
"The shift"
3:51
Do you feel in the upcoming new contract, that the shifting of infielders might be prohibited?  And, would they do away with the 3 batter rule?  Thank you....
Anthony Franco
3:51
I could see limits of shifting (which I think would be a mistake). The three-batter minimum rule is here for good, I'm guessing
