What’s your take on the Rockies moves so far and Bill Schmidt? I feel like he’s a lot more direct and open with the media compared to Bridich.
Anthony Franco
3:52
I'm not sure about his openness with the media, but I think Colorado's early moves (holding Gray and Story at the deadline, not making a QO to Gray, re-signing a bunch of guys) feel pretty similar to how they operated under Bridich
3:53
The Senzatela extension was just too much in my opinion. The Cron and Díaz deals were fine, but they also seem to be of the mind that retaining as much of last year's roster is preferable, and I think they're in need of a bigger reboot
3:54
All that said, it's tough to pin down how much of that is Schmidt's doing versus that of owner Dick Monfort. And it does seem Colorado's trying to rebuild an analytics staff that was basically decimated in 2020. So I don't think they're completely directionless but I also wouldn't have operated the same way they have over the past few months

Do i get a 6th year and who gives it to me?
Anthony Franco
3:55
I think so. I picked the Angels entering the offseason but there hasn't been much of anything about them poking around the middle infield market
3:56
Mariners, Jays, Yankees make sense. Can never rule the Dodgers out on getting creative to add great players

Considering the Mats contract- did the Tigers overpay for ERod?
Anthony Franco
3:57
E-Rod's far better than Matz in my opinion. He did maybe a touch better than I expected, but I still like that move for Detroit

Does it seem plausible that my strategy is to let Freeman seek his desirable offer elsewhere (200/6) and only then offer something in that neighborhood, avoiding bidding against myself? Or this waiting game is simple a result of the looming lockout?
Anthony Franco
3:57
I think it's mostly a product of the Braves already being at a franchise-record level of spending and not entirely sure they want to devote most or all of their remaining resources to a Freeman deal
3:58
They still have needs in the outfield and back of the rotation, which is why a Freeman re-up always felt easier to predict in theory than it is in practice
3:59
That's not to say they can't or won't get it done, but I don't know that Atlanta would match if Freeman finds his desired money elsewhere

Any chance the Tigers could swing a deal for Margot to play CF?
Anthony Franco
3:59
Sure, I'm sure the Rays would listen, particularly if they keep Kiermaier around
4:00
Josh Lowe's near major league readiness too, and they could see a Margot trade as a way to clear some playing time for him

Why do the White Sox insist on spending on bullpen instead of real needs like RF/2B/SP?
Anthony Franco
4:02
It's always easy to add to the bullpen, since you can knock everyone down a peg in the pecking order and continue to give high-leverage innings to good pitchers
Plus, Kopech looks likely to make the jump to the rotation and Kimbrel seems likelier than not to be traded
4:03
I agree that all three things you mentioned stand out as bigger needs than relief in Chicago, but I don't think the way they're approaching it is crazy
And Graveman at 3/24 is pretty good value overall

What do you see the Rangers doing this offseason? One of the big FA SS, a OF bat, and a FA veteran MORP?
Anthony Franco
4:04
All of those feels possible, yeah. If they're really willing to add $100M to the 2022 books, then the world is their oyster
4:05
Personally, I'd focus on the position player side. It's just easier to project one of the star young shortstops (even Story as opposed to Correa/Seager) to continue to be great in 2023-24 than it is for, say, Kevin Gausman
4:06
Pitchers just get hurt more often, and I don't think the Rangers are in position to be targeting specific areas of need on the roster so much as they're just trying to grab high-end talent wherever they can find it

Nick Plummer not even on the Cardinals 40 man roster. Then being released by the Cardinals. And then sign a major league contract? What is up with that?
Anthony Franco
4:06
This happens with a couple guys every offseason
4:07
Players qualify for minor league free agency after seven years in the minors if their current team doesn't add them to the 40-man
4:08
Some minor league free agents are in such demand (because other clubs' pro scouting departments love their physical tools and/or they have high minors performance track records) that they've got tons of teams offering them minor league jobs with Spring Training invites
If you really love that player and have a 40-man spot available, then perhaps you'll go the extra mile and offer a big league deal to get that guy in the org
4:09
He's still got all three minor league options. It doesn't mean the Mets have to keep Plummer on the big league active roster

Rodon 3yrs/75million with opt out after year 1 seem fair?
Anthony Franco
4:10
I'd take the under, feels like a lot of downside for the team

Do the Dodgers trade AJ Pollock after a great year, he is 34 and has 2 years left? Trade to teams in need of a CF and free up money to bring Chris Taylor back
Anthony Franco
4:11
Next year is a player option, so it's not really two years of club control
4:12
It's an interesting thought but I think it might just be a little too cute. Losing Pollock would be a pretty big blow to that lineup, and it seems like the Giants and potentially the Padres are going to give the Dodgers their money's worth again in 2022
4:13
I'm not sure it frees up enough money to make bringing CT3 back possible, although if it really comes down to an either/or between those two, then I guess I'd give it more thought

Orioles have no catcher on the 40 man roster. Assuming it’s not going to be Adley opening day, but can will he be called up Kris Bryant style after a few weeks?
Anthony Franco
4:13
Yep, barring changes to the service structure in the next CBA, I'm guessing we see Adley like three weeks into next season

Better to soend $300m on one player - Seager or $270m on Story, Marte, and Taylor?
