Chat with MLBTR's Anthony Franco: 7/2/21

Anthony Franco

Not to say Jobe isn't really talented, but I wouldn't go too crazy about a kid with three MLB caliber pitches carving up a bunch of 17-year-olds.
SS FA
9:20
Which SS FA gets the biggest payday?
Anthony Franco
9:20
I think it'll be Correa ultimately.
BrewCrew
9:21
Are they the best team in the NL? They are en fuego
Anthony Franco
9:21
Still the Dodgers for me.
Joplin Tornado Survivor
9:21
Well aboard! Glad to have you! Seems like the Cubs should sell since they have little chance of making a deep run in the pkayoffs?
Anthony Franco
9:23
Appreciate it! Still TBD on the Cubs I think. Getting swept this week really hurts, but if they make up two or three games on Milwaukee over the next couple weeks, I think they'll hold on.
Dalton Wilcox
9:23
Who's the best player you see getting traded this summer? Best pitcher?
Anthony Franco
9:23
Story and Kyle Gibson.
Berrios
9:23
Where do I go ?
Anthony Franco
9:24
I'd still be surprised if the Twins trade Berríos. Derrick Goold reported they had a really high ask when the Cardinals reached out. Feels like they'll hold on in hopes of a rebound in 2022.
Just my opinion
9:24
Are the Yankees really as bad as they have been playing in the first half of the season ? Do they get any better ?
Anthony Franco
9:25
I don't think they're this bad, no. I think the offense has to come around at some point.
9:26
Getting Voit back should help, and I still think eventually Gleyber will find some semblance of power again.
But they've dug themselves a pretty big hole and the teams in front of them are good, so at this point, it's more likely than not they miss the playoffs IMO.
Re: Trevor Story
9:27
Nats have Trea Turner and a depleted farm system. No chance
Anthony Franco
9:28
Everyone has enough depth in the system to land Story, since he'll be a free agent at the end of the year. Would the Nats give up Cavalli to upgrade third base for a couple months? I don't know, but I think he'd get the Rockies attention.

Why does media continue to say Astros are near the end of their run and have to go for it now?  In the event Crane swallows his pride and commits to Correa, nearly the entire team will be back next year (Greinke not really a loss with young staff) and there will be payroll space to add depth?  Farm has a couple solid position prospects where there will be a need in next year or two...
Anthony Franco
9:29
I haven't heard anyone say this. But I agree, they're going to be good for a while, even if Correa leaves.
Giants fan here
9:30
Will Farhan spend big money this off-season, and is he more likely so spend on one of the elite shortstops, or give Gausman a big new deal?
Anthony Franco
9:31
I do think they'll spend, but I wonder if Crawford's resurgence is enough for them to try to keep him and Gausman in the fold rather than splurge on one of the younger shortstops.
Change My Mind
9:31
Phil Gosselin is the steal of the offseason...
Anthony Franco
9:32
Ha, I've actually always liked Gosselin. He's a nice player to have on the bench and I'm happy he's having a good run right now.
Just my opinion
9:32
Do the Giants and the Redsox have a legit chance at 100 wins considering they both had 50 at the half way mark?
Anthony Franco
9:34
Under on both. I think the Dodgers will get to 100 but I don't think Boston has the pitching to stay quite at this pace and San Francisco needs all those veterans to keep playing at peak levels.
9:35
I've been shocked by how well the Giants have played this year, so maybe I'm still just too low on them. (I actually thought the Diamondbacks were going to finish third in that division preseason, dumb as that turned out to be).
Greg
9:35
Richard Rodriguez to Toronto for Gabriel Moreno and another top 30 prospect. Who says no?
Anthony Franco
9:35
I doubt Toronto would make Moreno available for a reliever, even one as good as Rodríguez.
Braves
9:36
Which non-first place team ends up first in their division by the end of the year?
Anthony Franco
9:36
I'd guess the Dodgers and Rays are most likely.
George Brett
9:36
Will any of Merrifield, Taylor, Dozier and Duffy get traded?
Anthony Franco
9:37
Taylor, sure. Won't be a huge return, but I think somebody would like to have him on their bench. No one's going after Dozier given the contract and terrible year, and K.C. has repeatedly shown no interest in trading Whit.
9:38
I did a poll for the site on Duffy last week. I think ultimately they'll hang onto him, but I could see a scenario where they trade him to a contender for the stretch run with the understanding they'll be involved in his market this offseason.

Are you enjoying doing your first chat with us…I believe I speak for us all in saying it’s a great chat so far :)
Anthony Franco
9:40
Yeah this was fun! Sorry again about the delay in the beginning. Have to do a piece for Front Office subscribers tonight, so I've got to run.
9:41
I'll be doing one of these every week. Not sure if it'll always be Friday nights, still sorting that stuff out.
I'm also on Twitter @affranco10 if anyone wants to ask me anything there. DM's are open and I'm happy to take questions (don't abuse it please)
9:42
Appreciate all the questions and I'll talk to you all next week. Have a good holiday weekend!
