I doubt they're much related. Walsh is a better fit at first anyways

The Mariners are playing well without some regulars.  How do you see them approach the deadline?  Is the wildcard worth chasing?
Anthony Franco
9:37
Servais suggested they're probably going to buy (assuming they continue to play pretty well over the next couple weeks)
9:38
Could see them being in on a Merrill Kelly type who's controllable through 2022
Robbie Ray
9:40
Over/under the Wheeler contract for me?
Anthony Franco
9:40
Under
Ray's having a great year but I think the track record's too erratic to push $120M
James
9:40
Do you really see Donaldson getting moved?
Anthony Franco
9:41
Probably not
Tough contract to move midseason, Twins want to contend in 2022, etc
9:42
More broadly with Minnesota, I think they'll move some rentals and listen but not come off high asks on guys with control beyond this year
9:43
Could see them moving a controllable reliever like Rogers or Duffey because relievers are pretty volatile and they might get a good haul with so many bullpen-needy teams, but I ultimately think it's unlikely they move Berríos or any key position players controllable past this year

2 question for ya!
  1. will we see any more decent trades before all star break or everything else after?
  2. who will the rangers trade? thanks guys have a great night!
Anthony Franco
9:45
  1. Doubt we'll see anything that's especially notable until after the Break
  2. Gibson and maybe Gallo. Beyond that, maybe they get some salary relief for Lyles and somebody picks up Culberson for very little but probably not much more

9:46
Who do the A’s land?  And is it possible to get a package deal with at least one reliever in the deal?
Anthony Franco
9:47
Cruz and one of the Twins' relievers (Hansel Robles or Tyler Duffey) maybe?
9:48
Remains to be seen if they're willing to take on a couple million dollars in Cruz's salary though
Adam Eaton
9:48
Will anyone pick me up after I clear waivers?
Anthony Franco
9:49
There'll be interest on minor league deals for sure. Not sure he's getting a guaranteed roster spot though

Welcome Anthony! Any chance the Reds go after a SS, like Story? Why was Gray put on IR after 2 starts since returning? Thanks
Anthony Franco
9:50
Addressed the Reds SS situation a little earlier in the chat. Gray, I think, is basically just leveraging the All-Star Break to get an extra reliever up
9:51
Those days still count for his IL stint, so once he pitched yesterday, no real reason not to IL him for anything minor, get the extra roster spot, and bring him back when first eligible next weekend
Brian Cashman
9:51
Who can I deal to restock?
Anthony Franco
9:52
I think it'd take a real collapse over the next couple weeks for the Yankees to sell
9:53
There's just not much that makes sense to move even if they wanted to restock. They're still trying to win next year and have most of these guys under control for 2022
9:54
Even if the plan for 2022 is to sign a top FA shortstop, now's a terrible time to trade Torres
Jon
9:54
Scherzer to the Angels a potential reality?
Anthony Franco
9:54
Nah I don't think that's really plausible. Nats don't usually sell and they're in the NL East race right now
Aaron
9:55
read in the Pittsburgh newspaper that Adam Frazier for Andrew Vaughn plus a low level arm is what they should be able to acquire. What is your thoughts on that proposal?
Anthony Franco
9:55
White Sox wouldn't do that
Clint Barmes Fan
9:55
Who should the Pirates take at #1? Who will they take?
Anthony Franco
9:56
Should take the best player on their board without regard to position
9:57
Now, if they're hoping to cut a deal at 1.1 so they can float a higher-upside guy or two down to them in the next couple rounds (like Baltimore did last year), I think that's defensible
9:58
But ultimately, most of the draft's about infusing  the most talent you possibly can into the farm system rather than addressing specific needs
9:59
As for who they'll take, I have no personal idea. But it seems like the consensus among the connected mocks (Keith Law's, BA's, Eric Longenhagen's, etc) is that they'd take Marcelo Mayer

If you had to put down $500 of your own money on who the Dbacks trade at the deadline, who’s gettin traded? Escobar? David Peralta? Not Marte apparently?
Anthony Franco
10:00
Escobar, Peralta, Cabrera, Kelly and Caleb Smith
Merrill Kelly, to be clear. Not Carson
10:01
I don't think they're moving anyone from the Marte, Pavin Smith, Carson Kelly, Rojas group
