Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/14/20

If the Nats extend Soto, or lockin a few years, would they be considered one year deals or would his AAV go up for 2020?  Thanks for the chat.
Steve Adams
3:24
Not sure they could pull the type of Chris Sale/Xander Bogaerts moves that the Red Sox made, saying those were new extensions on top of an existing one-year deal. Both would've been free agents and were already signed to one-year deals.

Soto isn't technically signed yet -- that'll come in Spring Training -- so if they extended him right now he'd be on a multi-year deal, the AAV of which would count against the Nats' luxury ledger, yes
Mr. Fowler
3:24
Trammel and Margot for Mookie. who says no?
Steve Adams
3:24
Red Sox
Sheev Palpatine
3:25
What happens to Brock Holt?
Steve Adams
3:25
He'll latch on somewhere on a small two- or one-year deal. I still stubbornly cling to my D-backs pick, just because Mike Hazen, Amiel Sawdaye and Jared Porter have acquired so many former Red Sox, ha.
Wes
3:26
Why would the Cards want Austin Dean?
Steve Adams
3:27
Big Triple-A track record, hits lefties well. They just traded multiple RHH outfielders.
Isaac
3:28
Get rid of Fowler and send him and Carpenter and a few prospects to the Rockies for Arenado
Steve Adams
3:28
If it were that easy, don't you think the Cardinals would've done it by now?
Trent
3:28
What do you think of a Zack Cozart reunion with the Reds?  Not a bad flyer on a minimum salary?  Or are the Reds better off with Galvis at short?
Steve Adams
3:29
Could bring him in on a minor league deal and see what he looks like this spring, but Galvis is probably the better defender at this point and I wouldn't be too optimistic that Cozart just rebounds like nothing happened in '18-'19
Jedidiah Hoyer
3:29
Who bats leadoff for CHC? Existing player (Rizzo, Hoerner after more development) or new acquisition?
Steve Adams
3:31
I think the complexion of their roster is going to change between now and Opening Day. Hoerner could, I guess, but I generally don't worry much or really think about lineup construction. As long as you're not slotting your best hitter 7th or 8th or putting some garbage OBP up top because "he's fast," I don't critique much.

According to rumors I made up, the Padres are acquiring S Marte for Baez, Morejon, Trammell and Wil Myers.  How far out is that rumor?
Steve Adams
3:32
Padres are giving up a ton of minor league talent there, and the Pirates aren't going to want to take back that Myers deal. I don't see it.
Let's Go Twins!
3:33
What does a realistic extension for Jose Berrios look like? Seems like it might take an overpay from the Twins.
Steve Adams
3:35
Nola took 4/45 at the same service class last year, but we felt that was a bit light. The record extension for a pitcher with 3+ years of service is a bit old now, so they might want to top Carlos Martinez's 5/51 mark to get something done.

3:36
How many ridiculously one-sided trade proposals do you see in the queue in a chat?
Steve Adams
3:36
A gazillion?
Mark
3:37
Do the nats trade for kyle seager
Steve Adams
3:37
Already mentioned the reasons I don't think Seager will move
Jeter and the Marlins
3:37
Do the Marlins have any more key moves left in them - like a SP (Taijuan Walker, Danny Salazar)?
Steve Adams
3:38
I think they'll add a reliever -- Pedro Strop or Brandon Kintzler, perhaps.

Salazar could be that, too. I don't think you can realistically expect him to be a starter at this point
Mo Knows
3:39
Do you think Dean will be flipped in a deal?
Steve Adams
3:39
The Marlins designated Dean for assignment last week. He's not going to flipped as a piece of any trade. The Cardinals just wanted to replenish some RHH OF depth
MOMark
3:40
Percentage of "great" prospects who turn out like Myers and are a so/so MLB player  or less? We only really hear about the ones who do as hoped, but seems like we forget the others.
Steve Adams
3:40
Most top prospects either bust or turn into non-superstar players. The Ronald Acunas, Mike Trouts etc. are few and far between
Rocky
3:41
Are there any rumors about the reds talking with Castellanos and/or Ozuna?
Steve Adams
3:42
I think signing Akiyama reduced the likelihood of that. They still have Senzel, Winker, Aquino, Jankowski, Schebler, Payton, Ervin, Siri all on the 40-man roster ... some of that group could be DFA fodder, but they'll want to get ABs for Akiyama, Winker, Senzel and Aquino at least
Gleyber or Alonso?
3:43
Would you take Gleyber or Alonso if you were starting a team and had to pick one of those two players?
Steve Adams
3:43
Gleyber. Easier to find a first baseman than a middle infielder.
Lt Data
3:44
do the Rays have a shot at the division this year?
Steve Adams
3:44
A small one, I suppose, but I like them more as a Wild Card team. I think the Yankees are pretty clear AL East favorites.
Thor to Twins
3:44
What would it take for the Twins to land Thor?
Steve Adams
3:44
Brodie Van Wagenen has said on multiple occasions, on the record, that he's not trading Noah Syndergaard this winter.
3:45
GMs don't make that type of proclamation and then move the guy anyway.
The Sockman
3:46
Without options remaining, will I be a mainstay in pinstripes this year, or a victim of a roster crunch?
Steve Adams
3:46
I imagine a roster spot is Tauchman's to lose this spring, but his track record is pretty limited
Whitey
3:47
Brett Gardner-people either seem to like his gritty play, or despise his play-offs #s.  Your opinion?
