Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/16/18

Pirates fans seemingly would've been OK with Forrest Whitley and A-ball warm bodies for Cole, despite the enormous attrition rate on pitching prospects. But adding three guys who are going to play for the '18 Pirates and can be around for 4+ years is somehow a monumental failure. I don't get the anger.

Of the top 11 MLBR free agents, only Wade Davis has signed (and Tanaka did not opt out). We're a month away from spring training. Are the other top 9 all going to get what they want? Or are some of them going to have to settle for much less?
Steve Adams
3:42
Some are going to get less than what they want. I think there's a pretty good chance we end up way off on Moustakas, for instance.

But most of those guys set out asking for crazy numbers, whereas our predictions were always more in line with how we thought the market would ultimately value them. Bruce went out looking for 5/90 and finally took 3/39, which is where we had him in the first place.

I think there's a disconnect between initial asking price and realistic landing spot more so than ever this offseason, which could partly be explained by the large Boras class, though that certainly isn't the only reason (see: Alex Cobb and Lance Lynn inexplicably looking for $100MM+)

Eventually, they're going to sign at rates that are more commensurate with historical context of free agency and, frankly, more commensurate with reality. No one was ever giving Lance Lynn $110MM.

Are the cardinals done this off season?
Steve Adams
3:43
I imagine they'll still add at least one more reliever

I think grabbing Starling Castro from fish and moving him back to shortstop makes a lot of sense for Reds?   He is still young and not terribly expensive?  I actually see a bigger deal possible..... Castro, Yellich, and  some cash  for a package of Hamilton, Duvall, Peraza, and couple of pitching prospects?
Steve Adams
3:44
Castro's playing second base because almost everyone agrees that he's incapable of playing SS. He's not even a very good defensive 2B.

And you're vastly underselling the value of Yelich with that trade offer. Plus, the Marlins wouldn't have interest in Hamilton, Duvall, etc. Those are fairly short-term pieces, and the Marlins are going to want players they can control for six years. They only took Castro as a financial mechanism to offset some of Stanton's salary.

How did Howie Kendrick only get 2/7? Seems like such a steal for such a versatile player.
Steve Adams
3:45
Short side of the platoon and teams not paying all that much for older bench guys these days. I agree it's a very nice deal for the Nats

Very quiet offseason for AA don’t you think?
Steve Adams
3:47
From day one he said he didn't plan to come in and just completely overhaul the roster.
Wade LeBlanc has a minor league deal with the Yankees, per Jerry Crasnick. Some LHP depth in the Bron

Any more mega trades happens???
Steve Adams
3:50
Jeff Todd put out a list of 60 realistic trade candidates this morning... we may not see anything of Stanton level, but sure there are still guys who can and probably will go. Kelvin Herrera seems fairly likely to me. Josh Harrison as well

Harrison to the yanks???

Wouldn't be too surprised

Any chance Arrieta ends up with the Nats?
Steve Adams
3:51
They're already going to be over the luxury tax line... adding Arrieta for $25MM+ per year is going to effectively cost them an extra $7.5MM+ annually, and they've already been baking deferrals into their deals for years. I don't see it.

Do you think the A’s should look for a catcher?
Steve Adams
3:51
In a word: yes.

I do get all the talk of the Yankees needing to add another starting pitcher. Granted Yu Darvish and Gerrit Cole are sexy names. I feel the Yankees have enough in-house depth. What are the chances that Chance Adams and or Chad Green are in the starting rotation?
Steve Adams
3:53
Green is in the 'pen moving forward.

Adams and Sheffield could emerge at some point. The Yankees don't necessarily NEED another starter, but they're looking at options for their playoff rotation and trying to really distance themselves from the Red Sox in the division race to avoid another Wild Card appearance. Adding a quality sixth starter will lessen the load on CC and Tanaka, and it safeguards them against injury. I don't mind the idea at all.

Are SF Giants knocking anymore or is Cutch CF this year for Duggar next?
Steve Adams
3:55
Probably not on Cain if they really want to stay south of the tax line, but Cutch in CF does little to address their OF defense, which Evans & Co. stated was a point of focus from the get-go. I like Jarrod Dyson, Billy Hamilton or someone along those lines to fit in there. Duggar is being talked up by the team's front office pretty heavily -- to the point where I think Giants fans are a little too heavily banking on him being a slam dunk CF of the future not too long from now
Those are dangerous expectations to set.

Giants move a piece in a trade maybe to free for a free agent signing?maybe take a shot at dyson?
Steve Adams
3:57
I think they'd be well served to trade their own Dyson (Sam) a means of clearing some payroll space to add a center fielder.

Todd Frazier seems like a great fit for the mets. Do you think they have room in the budget??
Steve Adams
3:57
Unless ownership has had a change of heart in terms of what it's willing to spend -- most of the Mets' remaining funds went to Bruce
Roddy Z

Cole to Astros. I think Pirates fans will be pleasantly surprised with their return in 2-3 years. Thoughts?
Steve Adams
4:00
I think they'll come away from the deal just fine. At least one of Musgrove, Moran or Feliz will be a useful piece for them in 2018. I think both Musgrove and Feliz will have nice seasons in Pittsburgh. There's so much focus on Musgrove's ERA and how he was moved to the bullpen. But he went to the 'pen in large part because Houston was so stacked in starters (as you'd expect for a World Series team), and Pirates fans of all fans should know that ERA means jack when evaluating a pitcher. How many upper-4.00s and mid-5.00s ERA guys have they turned around?

Could see him as a fit in San Fran if they can't move any payroll

Will the emergence of Mejia have the Indians trading Gomes or Perez this year?
Steve Adams
4:02
Mejia had 14 PAs in the Majors last season and has yet to play in AAA. I don't know that I'd consider him "emerged." I can see them eventually moving Gomes to clear a spot for him though, yes. He's into the pricier years of that deal and hasn't really played well over the past couple of seasons, though, so there may not be a great market unless he rebounds.

With all the moves Billy Eppler has made do you not just get the feeling that they'll still implode due to lack of consistent pitching? I predict 85 wins and at least 2-3 of their new signings going on the 10 day DL twice each
Steve Adams
4:04
I don't know that they'll "implode..." they won 80-something games last year as it was and have a decidedly better lineup/defense in 2018. But they should still be on the hunt for both rotation and bullpen upgrades, yeah.

I think I may be a good fit for the Pirates and swap for Josh Harrison. You agree?
