Chat with MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/16/24

I don't think it needs to be JD specifically, though I understand D-backs fans preferring him since they have a history with him. I think any of JDM, Turner, Soler or Hoskins makes sense there. Another reliever, sure. Pretty much any contender could use another bullpen arm.

Do you see the Mariners adding another bat? Or should we fans be happy with Raly/Haniger/Garver and stop whining?
Steve Adams
1:49
I think they'll still add an infielder
I've beaten the drum for them to sign Merrifield to play 2B, for instance, but there are a number of options they could pursue. Jorge Polanco would be a good 2B fit

Rhys Hoskins a potential upgrade over Busch? Platoon them?
Steve Adams
1:50
If your pitch to sign Hoskins includes "We're going to play you on the short side of a platoon," then he's not going to sign there.

India, Petty, Jorge enough for Cease?
Steve Adams
1:51
Nope
The Questions You Fear
1:51
With it looking less likely the Braves extended  Fried. Any chance they trade him?
Steve Adams
1:51
I don't think they're going to extend him but I also don't think that makes a trade in any way likely. They're trying to win. They'll play out the season and QO him, just like they did with Freddie and Dansby

Would a Vladdy extension (regardless of if he should be offered one or if he would consider it) be over/under Yordan Alvarez's? Do you think the Jays second generation stars are less likely to sign extensions because they already have financial security?
Steve Adams
1:53
Could be something to second-gen stars not feeling the financial pressure to sign, sure. Guerrero's deal would top Yordan's if for no other reason than service time. Alvarez is the better hitter, but his deal bought out three arb years and three FA years. Vlad is already through two of four arb seasons (he's a Super Two player), so he's going to be selling two arb seasons and then X number of free agent seasons
That's just a more expensive collection of years

Are there any rumblings about the Orioles trying to get Luzardo? What else would the Marlins ask for along Santander?
Steve Adams
1:55
I don't think Santander makes sense as a meaningful piece of a Luzardo deal. He's a free agent next winter. The Marlins already have too many corner OFs. His $11.7MM salary is more expensive than Luzardo. It just wouldn't even be on the radar, really.

If the O's want Luzardo, they have the pieces to get it done. Miami would want largely MLB-ready talent with a focus on SS, CF and C.

CJ Cron a cheap option for us? He's not a superstar but could provide power in the middle of the order
Steve Adams
1:55
Makes sense, sure
Jackson Holliday

Do you think I'll have over 450 major league plate appearances this year?
Steve Adams
1:55
I do
Philly Special
1:55
Bellinger or Hader?
Steve Adams
1:55
I don't think either is going to Philly
Cards
1:55
Do you think the Cards did enough to improve the team? Still think they need a closer and a younger starter.
Steve Adams
1:56
I don't think they did, no. Lynn/Gibson is an uninspiring solution to 40% of the rotation. I liked Gray, especially at the price they got him, but I'm surprised they've hung onto all of the young bats (so far) and thought they'd be more aggressive in using that surplus to find a more meaningful rotation upgrade.
1:57
I did like the Kittredge pickup well enough, assuming he's actually healthy
Johnny Cub
1:57
Cubs gotta still be making 1-2 more moves right? Still have close to $40M in space before the threshold and they have $15M in "dead money" (Bote, Mancini, Barnhart) off the books after this year
Steve Adams
1:57
Yeah, their offseason isn't going to be Imanaga, Busch and call it a day

1:58
Would Jonathan India be enough to get Kyle Teel and Wikelman Gonzalez from Boston?
Steve Adams
1:59
In general, I think Reds fans overestimate India's trade value. I don't think the Red Sox would give Teel straight up for India -- let alone Teel+

80 wins for the A’s. What’s your thoughts?..
Steve Adams
1:59
Dream big, A's fans!
(But... no. I do not see that. Or even 70. Maybe not 60.)

Steve, I wondered if you had an opinion about the Reds with all the moves they have made this far? From what I see, a lot of writers or whoever writes those things see the Reds as being a lot worse than last year? Nobody saw them going anywhere but down last year, but  I just wondered what your opinion is now?

Loved the Jeimer signing at that price. Opposite feelings about Pagan, particularly in that stadium. Suter was a nice price. Good pitcher. Local ties seem like they probably helped some there. I don't like the Martinez deal, especially if they're not even sure which role he'll occupy, but I thought the Montas roll of the dice was a good one.

So... pretty mixed move to move, but overall I like the Candelario/Suter/Montas signings enough that I think it's a solid winter. Still time left for some additional moves, too. And still lots of infielders they could listen on

Seattle being able to get Noelvi Marte back is a crazy thought... right?
Steve Adams
2:03
If they wanted to make one of their already semi-established young arms available, it's not totally crazy. I don't think it'll happen, but in terms of just looking at the needs of both the Reds and the Mariners, there's a pretty clear on-paper fit there -- and the Mariners obviously know Marte quite well already and presumably hold him in high regard.

Alright, I've got to wrap up. I'm on Twitter / X @Adams_Steve for more questions, etc.
