can pirates compete in 2023 or how far way until playoff hope is realistic
Steve Adams
1:38
I think 2024 is a more realistic timeline. By that point you've more plausibly got Endy Rodriguez, Henry Davis, Quinn Priester and others as possible big league options. Also, with no real money on the books beyond the current season, if they want to pivot away from the one-year veteran signings and sign some mid-tier, more impactful guys to multi-year deals, they can afford to do so.

Over/under on 50 stolen bases for Esteury Ruiz if he is our every-day lead-off hitter?
Steve Adams
1:39
That presumes he'll hit enough to stay in the Majors, which isn't a given. I'll take the under on that number.
Machado Cubs
1:40
Cubs will be shedding Heyward, Bellinger, Happ (perhaps Stroman) salary next year with hope that the highly regarded outfield prospects (PCA, Davis, Canario, etc) get there.  With upwards of $50-$70M coming off right there---are the Cubs major players for Machado?
Steve Adams
1:40
They could (and should) be, but Machado will require the largest contract in Cubs franchise history -- perhaps even by a matter of $100MM or so.
Kim trade
1:42
Kim for Pablo Lopez, maybe?
Steve Adams
1:42
If the Marlins trade Pablo Lopez, it's not going to be in return for another player who has two years of club control remaining
1:43
I guess Ha-Seong Kim technically has three years, but the third year is a mutual option, and those are never exercised. He's effectively controlled another two seasons, same as Lopez. The whole point of trading Lopez, for the Marlins, would be to add multiple, near-MLB-ready players who could be controlled for four-plus seasons.

What do you think about the possibility of the Phillies signing Brian Anderson to help their versatility while Harper is out?
Steve Adams
1:45
Anderson/Phillies seems fine to me, from the Philles' standpoint. But going back to my answer when asked about Gary Sanchez and the Royals.... it seems like another club would be able to offer more playing time to Anderson. Considering he's seeking a rebound year, opportunity to play seems like it'd be more enticing than signing on with a 2022 World Series club.

Is Muncy going to DH or play 3rd most for Dodgers.
Steve Adams
1:46
He's going to have to play the field more often than not after the Dodgers signed J.D. Martinez

Could the Braves have let Dansby walk in hopes they could pull off a trade for Ohtani or perhaps sign him in Free Agency?
Steve Adams
1:47
I think they let Dansby walk because they never had interest in paying him at the levels he could find in free agency. Anything beyond that is reading too much into it.
Greinke
1:47
I read about the Royals and an incentive laden contract possibility from them.  Why wouldn't other teams, like the Rays, Angels, or Orioles do the same?  Seems like a decent 5th, or 6th (Angels), starter option.
Steve Adams
1:49
They might be willing to do so, but Greinke wanted to go back to KC last offseason. He turned down comparable offers from at least the Tigers and Twins to do so.

At this point I lean toward Greinke signing elsewhere, though. Royals already signed Lyles and Yarbrough. With that pair, Brady Singer and Brad Keller, there's really only one rotation job open at the moment, but they have several young arms I'm sure they'd like to evaluate.
Joey Bart
1:50
Who's going the be my backup?
Steve Adams
1:50
Probably still Austin Wynns? He accepted the outright and will be in camp as a big league invitee. They'll just need to open a roster spot for him again, though injuries will make that easier to accomplish
Benny
1:51
Who is the closer for the Oakland A's on Opening Day?
Steve Adams
1:51
I'm not sure they'll firmly name one, but I would bet on Trevor May leading the team in saves (before he's traded in July)
Sam
1:52
Twins go for Greinke/Wacha and move Maeda to the bullpen?
Steve Adams
1:52
There are worse plans, but a healthy Maeda is the best pitcher of those three. Depends how many innings they think they can plausibly get from him.
Rockies
1:53
I feel like the Rockies are loading up on arms this offseason. Could you see some of these arms just popping off and forming a decent bullpen?
Steve Adams
1:55
I don't think we view their offseason similarly, haha. They've added some fringe-y guys (Seabold, Mears), a decent reliever (Suter) and paid a decent chunk of cash (despite limited resources) to buy low on a reliever with poor command (Johnson)
1:56
I don't think the bullpen looks especially deep or exciting -- sorry
Mets Bullpen
1:56
Solid or need Chafin/Moore (others?) to compete with Braves/Phil’s?
Steve Adams
1:57
It's fine, but there's not really a bullpen in MLB that wouldn't improve by adding Chafin
Rod Carew
1:57
Why don’t more players emulate the old Rod Carew batting stance and spray it to all fields? Try something new for a change and make contact instead of home run or strikeout.
Steve Adams
1:58
Spraying the ball to the opposite field was a lot easier when the average fastball was like 6-7 mph slower than it currently is and when guys weren't spamming 89-92 mph sliders
1:59
That's not to diminish Carew's skill set or career, by the way; Rod Carew's awesome
Just saying, I commonly see fans lament how no one knows how to go the other way or drop down a perfect bunt etc. anymore and... well, yeah, it's all gotten much harder for the hitters to do.
Lewin Diaz
1:59
THE NOT-SO-MERRY GO ROUND FINALLY STOPPED
Steve Adams
1:59
Indeed, Diaz finally cleared waivers.
2:00
What a few months for that guy
Cory
2:00
Any chance Tyler Mahle gets extended by the Twins this offseason?
Steve Adams
2:01
I'd have said  yes if not for the shoulder troubles ending his season. I doubt they'll want to make an especially aggressive offer based on that, and Mahle's good enough/young enough that I don't see why he'd want to take an offer that's baking in some trepidation regarding his shoulder.
Chafin
2:01
Speaking of Chafin, do you see the Cubs bringing him back?
Steve Adams
2:02
Cubs' MO on bullpen signings, since the Kimbrel landmine, has been to wait out the market and sign some veteran guys to cheap one-year deals -- just like they did with Boxberger
I don't think they're going to give Chafin the market-value two- or three-year deal he should recive.
