Chat With MLBTR's Steve Adams: 1/19/21

Minasian
2:45
Who is my first big signing/trade?
Steve Adams
2:45
I think Perry Minasian acquiring Raisel Iglesias counts as his first big trade as Angels GM. Iglesias is quite good.

Are the Cubs going to have a full blown rebuild?  Seems like it is trending that direction.
Steve Adams
2:46
To this point they've merely been "aggressively cutting payroll," I'd say, ha. If they move Contreras and/or Hendricks, then yeah, full tear-down is obviously happening.

I think it'll stop short of that, myself.

Atlanta's Pache and Waters are both projected to be centre fielders ... and Acuna has been doing a good job there.  Would the B's be better off to trade one of the kids to a team that could use them in CF - and get full value - rather than underutilize a CF-level talent in a corner?
Steve Adams
2:50
There are far, far worse things than having three center-field-capable guys roaming your outfield. We also don't yet know if either Pache or Waters will even hit enough to hold a spot. You can't just assume they're future regulars. That's a "good problem" to have if it gets to that point, and I don't think any team would feel it needs to trade or is underutilizing a CF-capable player by plugging him into LF.

Do the phillies have any interest in Re-signing Didi
Steve Adams
2:51
Of course, but their focus right now seems to be Realmuto

Nimmo for buxton
Steve Adams
2:52
I think I get about 100 questions a week from Mets fans asking about Byron Buxton. The Twins aren't going to trade him, but I'm curious what was written/reported at some point to make Mets fans so fixated on him. Does this go back to the Buxton/Syndergaard rumors?

I still see far too much free agent supply for teams willing to meet the demand. Is a cratering in free agent contracts imminent?
Steve Adams
2:53
Yyyyyyyyep. A lot of guys are going to take low-cost one-year deals or minor league pacts. Some older vets will probably retire rather than take the $1-2MM that's being put on the table for them.

would anyone take Randel Gritchuks remaining contract.....for a ptbnl.......
Steve Adams
2:53
No. The Jays would have to pay it down or take another contract back in return.

What is the typical career path for a GM? Do they all come up through the scouting area?
Steve Adams
2:54
That used to be the case, but not so much nowadays. Tim talked to 10 GMs back in March to give advice to people with this sort of question:
Jose Berrios
2:55
I'm not going to sign an extension with the Twins, am I?
Steve Adams
2:55
Feels like they'd have gotten there by now if it was going to happen. Berrios has spoken about wanting to further the market for starting pitchers in the past, so I don't think he was ever going to take a discount.

springer Is the first super prominent hitter from the cheating tree in Houston to be a free agent. Will other teams fans embrace him openly? What about if he’s off to a slow start?
Steve Adams
2:57
Springer was a Top 15 draft pick who raked through his minor league career and has hit every season in the big leagues. Unless he's been cheating since his days as an amateur, the guy is just a flat-out elite hitter. I'm not excusing the cheating -- I think the league was wrong to give the players a pass -- but I also believe Springer is in the 20 or so best hitters in MLB.

As such, I bet a new fan base will forgive and forget pretty quickly as long as he's mashing Springer Dingers on the regular.

Market is weak for corner bat first OF's, Where are Eddie Rosario's Landing possibilities?
Steve Adams
2:59
It's been weak for that type of player for a long time, hence the non-tender. I was surprised to see Schwarber get $10MM.

I thought the Nats were a fit there but still think Rosario would work with the Astros, Marlins, Indians, Braves, Mariners or Cardinals, to name a few.

I find Seattle boring and not worth my time
Steve Adams
3:04
Seattle is one of my favorite cities to visit. I also have been asked (or seen) very few Mariners questions. On a related note, there are currently 3200 people in here asking questions. Not easy to get to every team/fan base -- particularly when said team has been rather quiet of late and isn't generating tons of news.

Sorry for the delay here -- more technical issues. I think the software gets bogged down after a certain number of readers participate. I'm going to close up the chat, and hopefully we'll have a solution come next week. I know this has happened a couple times now.
Thanks for joining, as usual. I'm on Twitter @Adams_Steve. Hope everyone has a great week.
