How much did we offer Bauer?
Steve Adams
2:30
If I (or anyone) knew that number, I'd have reported it already, ha.
Angels
2:30
Do the Angels sign a big shortstop this offseason
Steve Adams
2:30
They already acquired Jose Iglesias, and my bet is he plays the bulk of the time at SS for them.
The Last of the Marlins Fans
2:31
Everyone in the NL East is getting catching improvements ... when do we reel in Contreras? What does it take to get it done?
Steve Adams
2:32
I'd imagine Alfaro and controllable young pitching would get the job done, but it'd probably be one of the arms fans would be loath to surrender. I know the Marlins were tied to Contreras and I fully believe their interest, but I wouldn't consider that trade especially likely at the moment or anything.
(Waiting on the inevitable "CONTRERAS TO FISH" report/announcement now that I said that)

Does JT resigning prevent me from coming back as well?
Steve Adams
2:34
It shouldn't. The Phillies are still $31MM shy of the luxury tax -- which also shouldn't matter for a big-market club like them, but I digress -- and they're also some $15MM shy of last year's payroll (pre-prorating)

What would be a realistic return from the Jays for Hendricks and Bryant?
Steve Adams
2:38
Broadly speaking, I find that rumor to be overblown. Unless I'm missing something, it stems largely from Scott Mitchell at TSN merely replying "yes" that the Jays have talked to the Cubs about both. If there were more legs to it, it'd have been reported more concretely and probably have a lot more traction at TSN, Sportsnet, the Toronto Star, the Toronto Sun, etc. Mitchell himself didn't even write a column on it.

That's not a knock on him by any means, more just a commentary on how eager Twitter is to run wild with the most innocuous of tweets.

In general, I'd say it'd be more surprising if the Jays hadn't spoken to the Cubs to gauge the asking price on Bryant and Hendricks.

2:39
Still dizzy from the Padres' off season (so far!) but wasn't signing Profar as 4th OF, when he can't play CF, a mistake?
Steve Adams
2:40
The Profar contract -- a $21MM bet that he'll be good in 2021 -- was the most baffling contract of the offseason to me. Giving him two opt-out clauses eliminated any upside in the deal for San Diego.

The Padres have had a real nice offseason, but that's a move that just made me say "What on earth?"
2:41
That would apply regardless of where Profar signed at those terms, but lack of obvious playing time with the Padres certainly doesn't make it any better.

2:42
Do you amir garrett is a trade candidate?
Steve Adams
2:42
Nah, I think he'll close for the Reds in 2021.
Taillon Ottavino Trades
2:43
Given that Taillon hasn't pitched in basically 2 years & can't be expected to handle a starters full workload, do you think the Yankees expect to use Taillon as a replacement for Ottavino & spot starter in 2021, before possibly moving him into the starting rotation in 2022?
Steve Adams
2:44
I think they'll use him in the rotation and monitor his workload, like they'll have to do with their entire rotation. It's all question marks. Taillon/Kluber pitched one inning last year (combined). Montgomery is in his first full post-TJ season. Deivi/Schmidt/King have combined for like 67 MLB innings, and Deivi has never topped 111 IP in a season. Severino might not be ready until May/June.
2:45
I'm surprised to see the Yankees going so volatile in the rotation when they had the resources to pursue more stability.

Does Jake Arietta still play baseball?
Steve Adams
2:45
Throwing a bullpen session for teams this Friday

2:46
Will the dbacks do ANYTHING competitive this off-season? They keep saying last year was a fluke, but havent done anything to help their glaring issues.
Steve Adams
2:46
They also traded Starling Marte in part because they weren't sure they'd pick up his option, and their owner, Ken Kendrick, was among the most vocal owners publicly complaining about revenue losses in 2020.
2:47
I don't think the front office has much room to spend

What is taking Ozuna so long?  And why haven't we seen anything about him?
Steve Adams
2:50
A lot of teams view him as more DH than left fielder, and the league keeps trying to barter with the MLBPA about the universal DH. I wouldn't sign until I had definitive word on the DH in the NL either, if I were Ozuna. But that's largely on MLB for continuing to try to use something both the league and the PA want as a bargaining chip when the PA has no real obligation to do the same. There's already a CBA In place for '21.

I still find it remarkable that they can't work something out, but if the league is seriously trying to offer the PA the universal DH as the carrot for agreeing to expanded postseason fields, that is straight-up laughable.

Do we still exist? Past like 3 months I've seen only 2-3 mentions of the Mariners in the chats
Steve Adams
2:51
I'm sure you do, but yeah, I haven't gotten tons of questions on them. I just wrote about them extensively for my weekly piece for front office subscribers -- specifically about how nicely they're set up for the future.
Braves trolling Phillies?
2:51
If the Braves weren't "circling JT Realmuto" do you think he would have ended up having to sign for $110 million instead?
Steve Adams
2:53
I highly doubt that prompted the Phillies to do much. They've known JTR wants the AAV record for catchers for a good while now, and it looked conveniently timed in the first place that the Braves' interest was reported right as the Jays spent big elsewhere.

There may have been something to it -- maybe the Jays were willing to offer him like 1/27 or 2/50 -- but I don't really imagine that's what pushed the needle in Philly, no.
Mister
2:53
Given the signings thus far, what would expect Adam Wainwright to command in a one-year deal?
Steve Adams
2:54
I'd say he *should* still command $8-11MM on a one-year deal, but he's probably limiting his market. It's still ridiculous to me that the Cards' offer to him right now is for less than the $5MM he was guaranteed in 2020.

2:55
Any word if Cole Hamels will pitch in 2021?
Steve Adams
2:55
He's planning to throw for clubs at some point here. No set date/timeline announced yet, but all indications are he wants to play, yes.

Using speak to text here because I'm sitting on my hands....Pedersen strikes out a ton. I totally should sign him right?
Steve Adams
2:56
Joc's strikeout rate over the past three years is lower than the league average.

Does 1/7 bring back Wong?
Steve Adams
2:57
I think even after Cesar settled for 1/5, Wong will do better than that.

How come no one has signed Joc Pederson yet?
Steve Adams
2:59
Outfield market in general has been slow. Broadly speaking, most clubs view players who are limited to 1B, 2B or the OF corners and have some glaring flaw (platoon split, questionable glovework, poor OBP skills, etc.) as pretty replaceable and interchangeable. It's why Cesar Hernandez got $5MM despite being a solid player, why Eddie Rosario was non-tendered, etc.

Joc's sort of in that bucket, although age makes him more appealing than several of the other corner bats for interested teams, I'd wager.
