Couple of minor league deals during this chat:

Ivan Nova to Phillies
Ehire Adrianza to Braves

Besides SS, what are the Phils' biggest needs and do we have the resources to fill them?
Steve Adams
3:01
Bullpen, bullpen and bullpen. Maybe a decent fifth starter. And then more bullpen depth.

They have plenty of space between them and the luxury tax, but we don't know owner John Middleton's cutoff point for spending.

Should the Twins go with Dobnak as their 5th starter or sign Wainright to a 1 year deal?
Steve Adams
3:02
If you're proposing it as an either-or, go with Wainwright. He's better, and the extra depth would be nice. I think they should be looking at higher-end rotation help than that, though.
Neil
3:03
Think the Twins will sign a SS and move Polanco to utility? Who makes the most sense for them?
Steve Adams
3:03
I can very much see them signing Semien or Gregorius, yes. Probably Semien more so, but either seems viable.

I have to believe the Yankees made the Ottavino trade with future moves beyond just potentially re-signing Gardner in mind. Do you think they also sign a reliever or two or save most of that $ below the luxury tax threshold for an in-season trade?
Steve Adams
3:04
There are so many relievers on the market that it could be both. If Gardner takes $2.5MM and they get a respectable veteran to take a similar guarantee, they'd still have a little in-season wiggle room.
3:05
Or they could act like the game's wealthiest and most iconic franchise and just stop treating the luxury tax like it matters. Crazy talk, I know. Ha.

Chances CLE deals Ramirez? And to who?
Steve Adams
3:09
The return on Ramirez would need to be overwhelming. He's controlled for something like 30-33MM over the next three years. I just can't see a team offering enough. It'd take something like multiple immediate MLB pieces and elite prospect capital. I don't even know what it'd look like ... Austin Riley, Christian Pache, Kyle Wright and then some from the Braves? He's a prime-aged MVP-caliber player being paid like a third or fourth starter.

If I were the Yankees I’d keep Frazier over Gardner more upside???
Steve Adams
3:10
No one's saying it's one or the other. Frazier has earned everyday at-bats. A Gardner return would be as a bench player.

Could this year's NL Central be won by a .500 team?
Steve Adams
3:12
Nah, but I guess it could be something in the mid-80s. At least they all get to beat up on the Pirates. And you know one of the four "contenders" will underperform and/or get decimated by injuries.

We could use another SP and a solid backup Catcher. Should we reunite Wainwright and Yadi with TLR?
Steve Adams
3:13
Zero chance Molina signs to be a backup
Tommy La Stella
3:14
Has my market changed at all since the Profar/Kikeee signings? What kind of contract should I be expecting?
Steve Adams
3:16
I thought TLS would get something in the Enrique range -- was pretty surprised to Hernandez get that deal. Love the versatility, but he's had one season of above-average offense in the past few years. Hard-hit rate and barrel rate went up in '20, but still didn't think he'd get that.

Fewer and fewer landing spots for infielders, though, and La Stella's glove probably holds him back. He should still get more than Cesar Hernandez, but I'm less convinced of two years than I was at the outset of free agency
Patrick
3:16
how can you had the Profar deal? 7 million is not much for a season of a very useful contributor off the bench with versatility who is a great clubhouse guy
Steve Adams
3:18
Because they're guaranteeing him $21MM when he'll opt out if he has a solid season and stick them with the extra $14MM if he has a poor year.

Profar doesn't play plus defense anywhere, really only has one season and one month of above-average offense under his belt in the majors, doesn't make tons of hard contact ... the opt-outs in that deal are brutal for the Padres.

Would it make sense for the Nats to sign Adam Duvall as a right handed platoon half for Kyle Schwarber?
Steve Adams
3:19
Sure, seems logical enough. Duvall might want a bigger role, but no guarantee that's out there.
Hank Thompson

What are the Giants doing? Are they treading water until next season, or actually trying to be competitive? Thanks Steve.
Steve Adams
3:20
More the former. I think they'll spend heavily next winter when the books are more clear
